  • In the autumn of 1888, a string of bloody murders rocked East London. Week after terrible week, the tabloids report the death of yet another Whitechapel resident. The police are left baffled, and investigations grow cold with no lead to who the killer may be. Known to history as Jack the Ripper, there are many theories as to who was guilty of the brutal Whitechapel killings. Through reenactment and interviews, this documentary film investigates the haunting story of Jack the Ripper, and the man thought to be behind the murders.

    Outside of the outrageously dramatic and loud music, accompanied by the dramatization of scenes... This is a good true crime documentary... The narrator is sublime in his delivery of accounts detailing the murders.

    Whilst I enjoy the documentary, the dramatised murders are wrong. The top hat is a myth added afterwards and the murder was more than likely strangulation as there was so little blood. Her heart wasn't beating - she was dead - when her throat was cut.

    A local reporter who was writing a book about the ripper murders, in 1970s was told to meet with a local nun who was at a local convent. She told him that if the last murder , was committed first then the others would still been alive. Makes you think..?

    7:13 I think this is an accurate portrayal of what Jack the Ripper would have looked like. This guy would have had to have looked and dressed perfectly normal as to not draw any sort of suspicion. I picture him on the outskirts as being soft spoken, approachable, and charismatic. He was definitely bold, but most likely knew the area, maybe even lived and/or worked in or right around whitecahpel and he had to have thought out escape routes beforehand. He knew who he was targeting and knew they’d lead him to a perfect spot to pull off a murder.

Those women could have been doing anything to make a buck including theft blackmail information selling anything. Maybe that made the wrong person mad..or one did and the rest to throw the cops suspiciously two of them were known to use the name Mary Kelley..

      Charles Lechmere never knew his father. On 1851 census, he is one year old, and there is no sign of his father? In 1858 his mother remarried, Thomas Cross, a policeman. Charles, aged about eight, now takes the surname Cross until his own marriage in 1870. Most importantly, before he married, sometime in his late teens, he secured employment with Pickford & Co. under the name, Charles Cross. From the time of his marriage he reverts to the surname, Lechmere, in all matters relating to his family, ie birth and death certs of children, census returns and the like. Anything to do with his employment Charles continued to use the surname Cross. The fatal car accident, Dec 1876; and Bucks Row, Aug 1888. There is a legal requirement to use your official birth surname on civil documents like a marriage cert, or children's birth, death certs. There was no legal requirement for Charles Cross to change his Pickford & Co. payroll name to Charles Lechmere. There was no National Insurance Numbers or old age pensions back then!

    • @davesmith7432
      @davesmith7432 Před 2 měsíci

      @@davekeating. close but not quite. We don’t know how often he went by Cross in his day to day. What we do know is the name Lechmere was very important to him. On all official documents in his life he used his real name. He only used ‘Cross’ when he had run ins with authorities and that census which he had no control over. His sisters death certificate read “Emily Lechmere”. She died while they were living with Thomas Cross. His wife was named Lechmere and all his kids were too. In fact, 2 of his children were named Charles Allen Lechmere. So your contention that the names were simply interchangeable is incorrect. He deliberately gave a false name at the inquest. He could have told the investigators his real name and gave the papers his fake name because the police report wasn’t public. But he didn’t! For what ever reason…he lied about his identity. That’s a fact. He lied about the time he left for work that morning. And then he lied to PC Misen. What else did he lie about? And here’s another indisputable fact. One no matter how much you try, you can’t dispute… Charles LECHMERE spent an unknown amount of time with the freshly murdered body of Mary Nichols.

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 Před 25 dny

      Yes this is old and outdated. Charles Lechmere was his name, documented on over a hundred examples where he gave it.
      His real name wasn't Cross.

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 Před 25 dny +1

      @davekeating:
      "Anything to do with his employment Charles continued to use the surname Cross"
      The inquest had nothing to do with his employment. He wasn't speaking to his bosses. He chose not to give his actual name. He never even said "my name is Charles Lechmere but I use the name Cross at work".
      He hid his actual name.

    • @davesmith7432
      @davesmith7432 Před 21 dnem +1

      In addition to the points Lyndon made, Charles’ older sister was a Lechmere at the time of her death. All his kids were Lechmere. In fact, 2 of his sons were named Charles Allen Lechmere.
      Now your point may not be completely wrong. He did have a son named Thomas. That’s probably the connection to his stepdad.

    Sorry guy but it did not begin with Mary Ann Nichols. Martha Tambram came before her. The Police finally knew who Jack was . He was driven insane and died in an institution in December 1888. Thus the murders ended. The elephant in the room is why the police kept his ID secret. It was best they did. And what drove him insane. That too was best kept a secret. Good job!

      Now, I do consider myself a non-professional Ripperologist.
      The Ripper experts can't agree on a canonical group of victims. So, no one can say absolutely whether Tabram was the first. Some say Emma Smith was the first. So, there you go.
      Most agree, the Ripper was most likely Aaron Kozminski. But, there's never been a consensus.
      I myself do think it was either Kozminski or Lechmere, leaning heavily toward Kozminski.

      Lechmere is by far the best suspect. Not a jot of evidence for Kosminski. The police bigwigs were ignorant about serial killers and mental health illness and were prejudiced and bigoted in their old fashioned and outdated views. That's the only reason Kosminski was mentioned. Nice tidy package for them. The Ripper was almost certainly an outwardly normal, even seemingly respectable local Brit, not some convenient foreign nutjob.
