    I recently carried a pallet of 20 boxes of suspended ceiling panels (1,000lbs total weight). I had to have all 4 panels open and up for the trip home. With the prop rod issue I mentioned in the video, the panels came down into the boxes during the drive and damaged one of the boxes. I really hate this cover.

      Glad I could help. I really wanted to love this cover, as I truly think it’s the best looking one on the market. I was moving a lot of boxes the last 4 days and had to flip open the entire cover multiple times each day. I am just dumbfounded as to how heavy the cover has gotten and swore at it every time I opened and closed it…lol. As I mentioned, it was a night and day difference in the weight when they sent me the replacement cover.

      Glad to help. Their customer service the first time around was pretty good when they replaced the cover but I guess they should have replaced everything including the side rails, especially since the replacement cover was the updated design that allowed you to now close the tailgate with the cover closed. My frustration with their customer service was with second time around trying to explain how the prop rods from the original rails no longer worked with the newer cover. They were clueless and just didn’t care. Lastly there’s no excuse for either the old design or the new design to absorb water over time and become 2-3 times heavier than when it was new.
      Let me know if you find a cover that you’re happy with. I’ve had my F-150 for 7 years and will probably keep it for another 7. I may need another new cover before then…lol.

    I'm torn between the Bakflip MX4 and the Bakflip F1. If I'm correct, the F1 is Composite while the MX4 is Aluminum. After watching your review and other similar ones, I wouldn't purchase the F1 (because of the water retention issue), but I may try the MX4. One of the comments here said the same as I'm feeling at the moment, which after reviewing other brands, they all have their share of issues - some more so than others. Thanks for taking the time to share your history of the product. I always appreciate knowing what people think of a product after they've had it for some period of time.

      Thanks for the kind words. I always want to try and help people out whenever possible. At first I thought that maybe my first F1 cover was defective with the water/weight retention but after the customer service rep told me it was a know issue and my replacement cover did the exact same thing a year later, I knew it was just the nature of the beast with this model. I too think maybe the MX4 may be a better choice since it is aluminum and not composite. Not sure if the leaky hinges will be any better. I do have to say from a looks-wise perspective, the BAKFlips do look the best as far as being flush with the bed rails. That’s what originally drew me towards their brand. I honestly might take a good look at WeatherTechs tonneau covers for my next truck. I’ve been happy with all of their other products and their customer support is phenomenal.

      I still have the same cover, as I won’t replace it until I get a new truck. The cover leaks like a sieve at the rubber hinges.
      I’ve looked at the WeatherTech for the next time around. Not sure if you have already found a new cover or fixed this one yet but you may be able to loosen up the two mounting bolts in the back that hold the cover and kind of move the entire cover towards the rear enough to get those holding bars to reach. I have the MX4 and had to take it off recently to spray the outside with bedliner to protect it more (it kept scuffing up real bad when laying one panel on the next). When I reinstalled, I found it was a little too far back and the rods did not line up properly. I loosened those two retaining bolts and pulled it forward a little and they lined up and latched properly. The rear (towards the tailgate) also covered more of my tailgate and still closed and sealed with no leaks. Good luck.

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the suggestions. Right now the cover is in the right place. I can’t move it back any further, as I will then have issues with the tailgate closing and will have a gap in the front of the bed. At this point with the F-150 turning 9 years old next month, I’m just sticking with this cover. When I buy a new truck, I will have to do my research and find another brand to put on that truck.

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  Před rokem

      The one good thing about this cover is the fact that since I have the larger 6.5' bed vs the 5.5', the F1 cover is made of 4 folding sections instead of just 3 on the 5.5' bed. With all 4 panels folded open and resting against the rear window. My 2021 Honda Foreman Rubicon is 84.5" long (just over 7'). If I pull it all the way up so that the front bumper just touches the folded cover, the rear tires sit on the gap between the tailgate and the bed. Of course for that reason, the tailgate will not close, but the machine fits nicely in the bed.
      Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  Před rokem +1

      I looked and it says the Lomax is available in a 6.5’ length. I assume it’s also a 4 panel for the 6.5’ length to keep the panel size down as to not block the high mounted stop light when the panels are all open.
      I’m definitely curious as to why my entire cover weighs now. I constantly think about how much extra weight I’m carrying around (the cover, not me 😂) when the truck is empty 90% of the time.

If there are covers that are all aluminum, my guess is that they would not have that problem. @@EverydayATV I research things to death. I own a 2004 Chevy Avalanche and it has the 3 panel system. I love these trucks and I use the 3 panel system all the time in various configurations, with that being said I also know it needed improvement as to the way it is taken off and put on. What I have come to figure out is you cant have everything you want. Fast forward to today I now also own a new 2022 GMC 2500 HD, like I said I research things to death. Several things to consider are do you want access from the tail gate being closed (lock on the outside) or do you want the lock on the inside (mostly rolling not hard flip) I want mine on the inside for security, anyone can come up with a power tool and open one up easy. Now to the flip up again from what I have noticed (except your F1 bak) most are the same and the only real difference is that texture finish or smooth and carpet back I don't want to scratch the top so IDK. I see where cats or animals can claw it or something. I hear the texture is hard to clean? Paragon wont work for me because of several issues, one main issue is that the whole thing has to stay open and what if you just want to protect something for a short distance from rain. This is why I am leaning on hard roll canister. The dealers says the can takes up room in the bed (true) but the flip up does also. You cant remove the back frame so you cant shove a washer to the front wall. I think for most people it come down to cost, most of the flip hard cover are around the same price give or take 100 bucks or so. I like the flip up also but saw where one was opened with someone trying to shove a tool in through the gate and cover (they did not succeed) but did damage to the gate. I also am over here by the ocean so that presents a finish issue. As for weather tec Yes I agree they look great but the seal hinge concerns me since they are new. I will let you know what I decide though. Thanks for your video and all your information.

    I noticed you did not put in the drain tubes, neither front nor rear. I bought the MX4 after hearing what you said about the panels becoming water logged. But the MX4 is painted flat black (with a vulnerable paint), so they got scratched very easily. Just like you, they replaced my MX4 under warranty, and I had to send them pics of me drilling holes in the MX4.
    I keep my truck in a garage, so I decided to roll the dice and get the F1. They (BAK) claim that the water does not get absorbed by the panels any more. We'll see....

    • @EverydayATV

      Thanks for the update. Glad they ended up coming through for you on the warranty. Did they send you new side rails too or only the cover? Were you able to switch to the F1 on the warranty exchange? If so, in that case I hope you got new rails just in case there is a slight difference, as was the case with mine.
      I do have the drain tubes installed at the end of the rails closest to the cab. On my F-150, there are two sets of rubber grommets at each corner of the front of the bed, one high and one low. My tubes are literally only 3”‘long and go into the top grommet directly under the fixed portion of the cover. My cover leaks mostly in the very middle of the cover at the rubber hinges between the panels.
      Interesting to hear about supposedly the water retention issue being solved. Hope that’s the case, as maybe I would go back to it for my next truck. It is one of the sleekest covers out there. As others have said, there’s not one single cover that’s perfect.
      Best of luck with your new one and I hope you don’t have the issue with the water retention. Keep in mind that my two F1’s didn’t start getting heavy until at least a year or two later and as they did, it was gradual.

      Thanks for the comments. Plenty of air does get into the bed when the cover is closed as there is a gap between the tailgate and the bed floor. Once it’s wet, it air dries out pretty quick. The issue is with the water itself seeping in when it’s raining. I’ve had cardboard boxes of stuff totally soaked through during a normal rain. It’s to the point now where if I know it will be raining, I will try and out the things in Rubbermaid’s. Not seats possible when you buy something new and are transporting it home. 😡. Hope you have better luck with the Gator.

Maybe drilling a few holes in the bottom panel. Would possibly allow water to drain and material between top and bottom panel to air dry. These covers cost a lot of money 8 to 9 and 1,000.00 up that why I made my own with plywood and hinges and high gloss black paint to keep the water out of the wood quad fold on a 1992 chevy silverado. I spent maybe $125.00 on everything.

Not good in this day and age of the post Covid mentality of doing business where companies have basically done away with customer satisfaction while blaming the likes of Covid, global warming, and/or material shortages. I'd rather find a company that wants to impart customer satisfaction.

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  Před měsícem

      Good questions.
      The water is saturated in the fibers of the composite material. It’s not like it’s sloshing around in there and can’t be drained out simply like water in a container.
      The supports are permanently attached to the rails. There’s no way to take them off to move them closer up to the cab.
      The rubber hinges between the four panels now also leak like a sieve. When I replace the truck in a few more years I will definitely look at other manufacturers.

You should have checked the prop rods when you installed the new cover so that one is on you. Two years later and the cover now being out of warranty I can't blame the company for that. If you had checked it right away I bet BAKFlip would have taken care of you on the prop rod issue. I have had three of the MX4 covers and just ordered another MX4 cover for my new Tacoma. What’s really strange about the BAKFlip 4 sections is that only the 1st (closest to the tailgate), 3rd and 4th sections have the lock with the pull cable. The 2nd section does not. It just can be lifted on it’s own. I thought at first I had a defective cover but BAK assured me it’s designed that way. The updated 2nd gen F1 is the same way.

The new panels were extremely light at first and like the original, got very heavy within the next year or two. Sorry I that I didn’t notice the prop rods on original rails didn’t work with the new cover until I went to use them for the first time before this video was shot. BAKFlip makes a good product, some have posted in this comment section that BAKFlip has redesigned the F1 composite panels to eliminate the water retention issue. I have owned three BAKFlip MX4 covers and all three were great covers, I just ordered a new BAKFlip MX4 cover for my new Tacoma making it four MX4 covers that I will have owned now. This guy got a warranty cover but waited two years to alert BAKFlip about the prop rod issue after the cover was no longer under warranty. There are always two sides to every story, I would love to hear the other side of this story. As for the prop rods he could have drilled the rivets of the original prop rod brackets and move them forward to make the prop rods work. Instead he just makes a video and whines about it.

      Try taking in your vehicle after it is out of warranty and see if they will fix it for free, I bet they tell you to go pound sand. This guy waited 2 years after he got the original cover replaced under warranty then figured out the prop rods where to short for the new cover and his warranty was now over with so the manufacture had no more responsibility with the cover. Instead of making a video whining about it he could have just drilled out the rivets hold the prop rod brackets in place and move the brackets forward enough so that the prop rods would work again.
      He also clearly never did any exterior maintenance to the cover like waxing it to keep the finish protected, if he had kept it waxed I bet he would not have had the water retention issue because the water would have beaded up and rolled off the cover instead of soaking into the compost fiberglass panel.
      If he would have alerted BAKFlip to the prop rod issue as soon as he installed the replacement cover I bet they would have taken care of him while the cover was still under warranty. Two year later I don't blame BAKFlip.

  • @bigal7561
    @bigal7561 Před rokem

    Not sure how plastic and aluminum retain water. Must be magic plastic or the gap in the panels may be holding water. Might explaine the rubber coating over plastic or polymer.
    I do appreciate any review, but as far as I can see, the company has gone a long way to making you happy. You're toteing a rubicon in your truck so I think you have a couple of bucks. Spend the 2 or 3 k and get something that does everything but drive your truck. It's a cover, not the ARK

    • @EverydayATV
      @EverydayATV  Před rokem +2

      According to Bak Industries, the F1 inner core of the BAKFlip is a high density EPS (polystyrene). The top outer edge is fiberglass. The only aluminum components are the side rails and the frame of each of the 4 panels. When I had the issues with the gaps in the rubber hinges with the first panel, the Bak rep explained to me that the reason my original panel was so heavy compared to the replacement is that their panels absorb water over time. They also said the new one would do the same. These were their exact words, not mine. Mind you, it takes a year or two before the panels become extremely heavy. Others have commented that they have experienced the same heaviness issues with time. Once the panels become waterlogged, it’s not like several weeks of no rain will dry them out and make them lighter again. The first cover was watertight for the first two years and then started leaking with the gaps in the rubber hinges. The replacement cover stayed watertight for the first two years and also now leaks like a sieve. I just moved our daughter into a new home and we had to put everything into plastic bags, as the entire inside of the bed was wet after a rain we had. Yes I suppose I could get a Gemtop or a 1 piece fiberglass hinges cover to in order to be watertight, but that won’t work for the tall items I often have to carry in the back of my truck. My issue with Bak is they shouldn’t advertise it as watertight if it isn’t.
      Yes, they somewhat stood behind their product when the first one started to come apart and leak, but when they sent me an updated cover, they should have also replaced the side rails that were also updated. I have a new version cover that doesn’t play along well with the old style side rails.
      And yes, I can afford any cover out there, but that doesn’t mean I want to throw my hard-earned money away on a product that doesn’t live up to its expectation, nor should anyone else have to throw their money away either.
      There’s plenty of alternatives out there. I personally would never buy another one of their products for my next truck.
