    the worst feature of the Dapol N 122/121 is the solid wall behind the cab at the non-van end. sacreligious!
    I'm in the process of modelling this same unit, in mid-70s guise, when it was wandering around Scotland with a somewhat crude plate welded over the route number aperture under the centre windows. This video is very helpful to me in knowing what the 122 _should_ look like as mine is made from assorted spares
    got a bit of an issue with the chassis bowing - the buffer beams sag below the cabs noticeably

    I would have binned the board and used one of these DCC NEM662 NEXT18 FEMALE socket to 14 wire adaptor. At £4 with generous solder pads it’s I think a no brainer and shoved in a stay alive for good measure.

    Just purchased the new Dapol 121 DMU model, this is for the new next 18 decoder, think I will check all those wires for bad soldering, yours looked a mess tbh, all twisted up and thinking these bare wires shorted.??..
    Great repair you did, and soldering that lighting chip was a real challenge.. well done..

      @@paulkandi Thanks for watching 👍, i should think quality has improved with the advent of NXT18, also though the wiring mess may very well of been from the previous owner of the loco as it had been taken apart before i got my hands on it, its very easy to cause a short in these tiny locos so be careful 👍

    • @paulkandi
      @paulkandi Před 13 dny

      Yes, can well understand, I fit aftermarket DCC sound decoders into 00 gauge diesel & steam locos, some hard wired , a lot easier than N, all my N gauge are DCC fitted, but no sound as yet, just way to expensive..carry on the good work👍👍

    Hi Rich! nice fix with the class 122 those diode packages a very prone to go in Dapol locos, I believe the diodes control the lighting. when I saw the state of the board, like you I suspect either a short on the wiring but more than likely the chip over heating, and shrinking back the protection on the wires which in turn caused the short. Really enjoyed watching you taking this loco apart, It's was nice to see without me having to do it and breaking something LOL! In regards to the next loco, at the time of writing it is currently 4 on the 90 and 3 on the 142 so I'm opting for the 142 LOL! I do have both locos that I need to take apart, but I think the 142 will be more challenging LOL! All the best Tony.

      Due to popularity i need to do all of them with time but yes the 142 is getting some traction! I have changed a fair few of those chips myself to date, i was tempted just to remove the PCB all together however i couldn't make up my mind on DC or DCC lol 😂

    Wow ! Nicely done TWW. That's a nice model and having just checked my old spotting book from 1980 - I did see the real 55005 in action. Back then it would have been numbered SC55005 so as not to get confused with the Deltic loco numbering. Kind regards - Mike.

    Another great video. Whilst watching and commenting another of your videos earlier (thanks for your reply!) I was actually running my 122 after some time, following wheel and pickup clean, as well as a light oil, after which it ran beautifully. I am currently running a Dapol 27, which although running very smoothly and recently cleaned, is making an intermittent screeching sound with a very light 'electrical' smell. Any thoughts?!

    • @ThisWayWorksTWW
      @ThisWayWorksTWW  Před rokem +1

      Screeching noise could be dry motor bearings, a tiny tiny touch of oil on the motor shaft would help here 👍
