      @M0dElite Před 4 měsíci +64

      @@TheRedBeard216I used to not wear socks, but got tired of the smelly shoes. I only take them of for hard heel hooks. I really don't notice any difference in the toe feel, but maybe that's because I tend to use relatively stiff dowturned shoes where I don't get much feel to the rock anyways. In any case I would argue that if you have 5 mm of material (the sole + mid sole and insole) between the hold and the toe, the sub 1 mm thick sock doesn't do much in the way of loosing sensitivity. That's just my experience though. My point is that you can definitely perform wearing socks. I think this no sock -> pro, socks -> beginner -mind set is a bit old fashioned.

      @@TheRedBeard216 I wear socks that are specifically meant for climbing and not only do I have almost zero loss in sensitivity but they also fit very snug. In fact they make it easier to downsize the shoes because you slide into them more easily(similarly to how some people use plastic to slide into their shoes when they are new). Socks have never held me back even when having to heel hook very aggressively and as you can see by my youtube videos I am not quite a beginner anymore. If you don't believe me you should google Ai Mori and funnily enough a lot of the images that show up show her aggressively heelhooking in socks.

    • @IronJohn755

      @@TheRedBeard216 Tell it to Japanese climbers (Ai Mori & Anraku to name two). I find with no socks that my feet get sweaty and slide around more. At the level I'm climbing (redpoint indoors ~V5 and 5.12c) I don't feel any decreased toe sensitivity is a hindrance. I think no socks / ultra tight shoes is much more of a stylistic preference that make people feel cool.

    Regarding the pin - my gym has quarterly competitions they call "The Circuit" where you must complete all of the routes, of a particular grade, in the gym, within an hour, and you get a pin with the respective color grade, which people put on their chalk bags. So you can see, throughout the year, what level of climber someone is by the color pin they have.
    The minimum is 15 pieces of flare. Now, Brian has 30 pieces of flare. Do you want to do the bare minimum?

    • @Johnny_Cash_Flow

      @@nosreuter Yup, an hour.
      There are roughly 20 routes, depending on grade. Higher grades have fewer routes, and vice versa. A mid-tier grade has about 24 problems.
      The gym has a standard rotation of 5 weeks (4 weeks new route section, 1 week rest), so the Circuit falls along that rotation.

    I am a proud owner of a La Sportiva solution pair of climbing shoes and use socks while climbing even slabs which is btw my favorite climbing style. The way I understand it is that if the socks is thin enough, you basically dont lose feeling in the toes and I find it saves my feet from suffuring too much. The only bad part is for heel hooks where it can slip of your heel.

    Finally, I can relate to the struggles of having a large ape index. The reason why you lose power with a positive ape index is because in general the holds are in a fixed distance apart. What this essentially means is depending on your height and reach your body ends up being further away from the holds than normal. Now if you've ever seen a lever or a wrench in action then you know the longer the arm the greater the force and your fingers are the ones bearing the load. So now you have to work much harder to compensate. Technique can help a bit but at the end of the day your only method is to get relatively stronger.

      6:20 I can add that (at least for me, I am tall) the step up into undercling was pretty easy. It was A: realizing you need to heel hook the outside right vertical hold, and B: the start getting over onto the blue volume sucks. It requires tons of core strength and the blue volume is only a few raised edges of flat/slippery plastic, so if you aren't perfectly centered you slide off

    My entire first year of climbing I wore socks under my own shoes. I wasn’t that knowledgeable about climbing culture and it just made sense to me that wearing socks would make my shoes more comfortable like it did with ice skate or cleats. The shoes were broken in to the size of my feet with socks by the time I learned about the stigma, so they were too big to go no-socks. I think that, for a first-year (or maybe a first-half-year) climber, it’s doesn’t make too much of a difference. Do what ever is comfy. I do not think socks will keep your shoes from getting gross, you’re still sweating in them and smearing them all over the place so they get dirty regardless of sockage. I could be convinced that the near infinitesimal footholds of higher grade slabs would require a more rigid foot to shoes to wall connection, which socks might get in the way of.

    I've been climbing for a few months and I've never bought shoes and I use rentals with socks.
    I have never once been unable to do a boulder and thought that it was because of my feet. Is it really that important that I buy shoes?
    My highest grade is v7.

    Well, I wear climbing shoes with thin socks. My feet are really sensitive and they get hurt easily so wearing socks protects them from chafing.

    I Ganba is short for Ganbatte in japanese. Which basically means do your best. Very used by the japanese climbers , equivalent to the french allez allez or spanish venga venga or italian alè alè or alè duro

    I wear socks with my rental shoes because it's extremely uncomfortable without socks and at 3 months in I am not yet ready to accept the fact climbing shoes aren't supposed to feel comfortable.

    The most annoying thing I hate about myself is that I don't know how long I've been climbing. I climbed when I was younger with my dad, but only like a few times a year. Does that count? Then, I slowly climbed more and more regularly.

    FYI: Pewdiepie lives in Japan and everyone here climbs in socks. It's not a newb thing. You can often hear IFSC commentators commenting on the Japanese climbers wearing socks. I think most climbers wear very thin socks ("rock socks"). It much more comfortable and doesn't adversely impact your climbing.

    From my friends from Sweden and Norway, I think its just the same thing as canadians hanging shit on folks from the US or Aussies making fun of Kiwis. Its a sibling rivalry, making fun of your best friends, not ACTUAL rivalry. (We aussies love kiwis, as long as they dont declare independence. one country many systems)

    • @florianneumann9441
      @florianneumann9441 Před 4 měsíci

      One - get shoes that better fit your foot shape aka try different models … two - look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself ‚did I buy my shoes to small because someone told me it should hurt and be at least 2 sizes smaller than your street shoes‘ and/or ‚I bought an ultra aggressive advanced model before even climbing for about at least 1-1.5 years because *insert pro climber* uses it‘ Three - it’s totally a thing that you don’t wear your shoes the whole stay at the gym, but slip out of them when not climbing. Four - if your shoes are very new and are not ‚broken in‘ (factory new not adapted to your foot and still very stiff and inflexible) make sure to bend them around a bit and warm them up a bit before use… I usually now think of a shoe fitting perfectly if I can stay in it for about an hour before feeling like slipping out

    • @florianneumann9441
      @florianneumann9441 Před 4 měsíci

      Oh - also, if you feel your shoes fit well it can also be a matter of powering throw and giving your toes and skin to adapt and getting less sensitive/roughened up… may be a bit painful at first, but you will definitely encounter a bit of pain in climbing sooner or later… so take it as early lesson in that, maybe ^^
