  • Installing an ARB awning with included LED lights on a fiberglass hightop 1993 Chevy G20.
    Most awnings require a luggage rack to attach it to. I do not have one so had to improvise. Followed suggestions from gnomadhome.com

    Very few (if any) videos of adding an awning to a van with a fiberglass hightop. The Highland brackets are excellent. Nice job and great video.

      You are correct @ExpressVanCamper. I just bought an ARB awning and the same brackets. Trying to figure out how to make it secure without drilling holes.

    Thank you for this video I have a 2003 chevy express high top conversion van. I been converting it to a campervan since last year and I have been trying to figure out how to mount an awning for quite a while. Great video, thanks again!

    I would try and get to washers to sandwich the fiberglass along with silicone , then another nut on outside to squeeze together . Prevent leaks
    I just got me a 87 G20 with 100k miles Vandura that was sitting in someone's yard. Thinking of going this same route!! Great idea with the rain gutter clamps. Could probably add long black water tube on that same assembly you created for out board water / shower

      I’ve actually considered this after the fact. No leaks as of yet but next time I work on it I hope to do this. Not a difficult fix but will involve taking it down.

      If it ain't a 454 it ain't OG HD. Might as well have the big six. No AC no PW no cruise 10 mpg no way not me I want 70's Dodge slant six just because tranny won't fail and cost you more than your van is worth. Most vehicles are stationary when purchased I've bought too many to count and I have not bought a moving one yet. I rented a moving van once.

    Ive seen your last couple videos on this van and you did a real nice job with this build. I love the interior lights and bed area. I have a '94 G20 in great condition but nothing built inside yet.

      350 or 454? 4R80? Chevy didn't offer 4x4 vans aftermarket conversion only right? or wrong? Tranny is weakest link GM s of that vintage everything else bullet proof except water pumps and alternators

    Great video. Thanks for posting. Hadn't even thought of that method. Was concentrating on attachment directly to shell. You have saved me a great deal of aggravation - thanks. A couple of questions. Did you have to buy a complete roof rack or were you able to get the clamps alone. If you did order the clamps alone could you share source. And, what is the distance fromr the channel at the bottom of the awning to the ground. Appreciate any response.

    Nice! We have an ‘87 G20, and looking for ideas, watched your speedy removal in your other video, I’m not that fast but gave me ideas, thx. Does the rainwater drip under the awning attachment and into where the doors open? Or do they need to be shut .

    • @SawDustRevival
      @SawDustRevival  Před rokem

      Rain does not drip. I was initially afraid of that but the van has a little gutter the awning attaches too. That prevents it from dripping rain. The awning has been a game changer. Best addition to the van. We love it.

    Awesome Conversion... one question, what is the mileage you get per gallon of gas? I currently have a Short Bus, but it consumes a lot of gasoline and I am looking for something more efficient.

    Are you still happy with your awning? Do you regret drilling holes in the side of your hightop? I have a 1998 express hightop and I am considering doing the same thing.

    If you were going to drill through the topper anyway, why mess with the brackets? Why not just bolt the awning straight to the topper?
    You should also add some butyl or silicone to the bolts, you’re going to leak.

    • @melaniecotterell8263
      @melaniecotterell8263 Před 2 lety

      he did caulk them from the inside. I'd put a spacer between bracket and fiberglass to take up the gap so you could clench down on the bracket through bolts more prevent any relative movement. The caulk will not last long unless you use the good shit. Whatever gooey messy product that may be. I would have bought an EZ Up. Awnings are overrated anyway & that ARB rag would be shredded in one hour in Mojave. Setting it up would be comedic.3 stooges needed.

      It’s comes with the awning and has a cigarette lighter plug. Plug it in, turn on the power with a switch. Easy peasy.

      Traveled around with an EZ up the first year. This is so much better. EZ up took up a lot of storage inside and did not provide proper cover over the door on rainy days. We love this awning.
