“Can’t get him to blow it correctly”. Well actually according to the FRA:

@@CTSLRailfan Yes he is, you can hear it in the video
@@surfliner456 you can hear the spaces between the long long short long. there's no actual rule for how long to blow each long and short. only the 15 to 20 seconds before reaching the crossing.
Encinitas has multiple crossings withing short distance of each other. Love how the old guy mentions its one long obnoxious blast when you can obviously hear multiple, albeit very short, breaks.
Another person that probably does not live near this street. Or has seen the change in the last 6-9 months.

The rule is 20 seconds per crossing. There's 2 crossings...
Theres 3 if you count the Pedestrian Crossing but ur point still stands
The rule is begin blowing not more than 20 seconds and not less than 15 seconds before reaching the crossing.
Well there's a rule called a 14L which the Engineer is suppose to do it goes Long, Long, Short, and Long the 14L typically lasts for around 10-15 seconds.

I live next to an SP line that runs freight trains through my neighborhood several times a day. Because it has to snake though several streets of our neighborhood, there is audible horn blowing for about 5~8 minutes depending on the the length & speed of train. Better a few seconds of noise than somebody going splat on the front of a train.

What a great life!! Your only complaint is a 30 sec train horn. Wow!!
Hes saving lives that engineer, i respect him, the old guy complaining is a NIMBY and cant understand that the horn is needed
Love this comment section! I'm with the majority of people that want to know a train is coming. Keep on doing what you're doing Amtrak engineer/engineers. My advice to the people complaining, move or just deal with the 30 second annoyance. My job is annoying every second of every day spent working and I put up with 50 hours of it a week.
It would be a lot worse if the engineer was doing that at the middle of the night. And besides, what wasn't mentioned was that there is 2 street crossings meaning the engineer has to repeat the train horn sequence for each crossing, so you can expect to hear the horn for at least 30-40 seconds.
Gee wiz, one guy has literally spent his entire time replying to every single last comment as if he's the man in the video (which I'm convinced he is). Don't buy next to transportation infrastructure (highways, railroad, ship yards/ports, and airports) if you're sensitive to the sound. If it were such a huge problem, then the city council would've approached Amtrak by now. Did I mention someone was killed 5 years ago in Encinitas? The conductor saw her running towards the train and couldn't stop it in time. This man says it's been going on for several years now, so how do we know it's not because of this incident or others like it that's causing the constant train blowing?? Did I also mention Amtrak comes through there at high speeds at times?? Just move dude.
You are welcome to look me up. I am not the old guy who mentions ONE DRIVER. Try reading what I have to say before judging. PS. I was born here and until 6 months ago, Everything was fine with me. Do some research.

I get the complaint but it isn't the engineer's fault for constantly blowing the horn. It's literally his (and every engineer's) job to blow the horn sequence at every crossing. There's 2 crossings (3 if you count the ped x-ing). So it's obvious that you should hear the horn blowing for about 30-60 seconds. As a train enthusiast, ofc i love hearing horns. If you have a problem with train horns, then move out. Move to a place with a no horn zone like chicago, if u still love trains. More questions to ask: What did you expect? Why did you even move there in the first place? Disagree with me if you want, idc. This is what i think, my opinion, and should go with anyone who wants to live in noisy places like this.

Amtrak doesn't stop in Encinitas, so Surfliners roll through there at about 60 MPH. There is a curve just north of the station, which forces Surfliners to slow down from 90 MPH. What most railfans don't realize is that this is how quiet zones get established. One engineer who, let's face facts, is overdoing the horn a bit, is going to get this town to force a quiet zone for all the other rulebook-abiding engineers. Now instead of the lonesome sound of the whistle in the distance, and plenty of warning of an approaching train, you're relying on nothing but lights and bells and maybe one of those awful crossing-gate horn loudspeakers. Don't get me wrong, I abhor quiet zones, but all it takes is something like this and that's what you get.
2 1/2yrs ago, i watched video from the train that hit & killed my son. The engineer did all he could to stop, but couldn't. It was very traumatizing for him as well. So, if its for safety im ok with it. The horror of it for me was mistakenly being told it was an accident. The coroner was unaware i didn't know it was suicide. Watching the video was how i had to find out. People griping are only thinking of themselves & not that there might be a good reason for the horn pattern.
Trains sound their horn because people need to pay attention and live their lives.
why move infront of a train station? tracks prolly been there longer then those homes and plus they’re required to blow the horn even if it’s a quiet zone, gtfo n move somewhere else if it’s that big of a problem

How the hell do they know it’s the same exact engineer?
Multiple Crossing PLUS a high speed platform without a station stop. Some rule books require trains not stopping sound horn the length of platform being passed
First if you don't like train noises maybe don't live near train tracks and second the whole "no horn should last more than 20 secs" is completely false, if you take the time to actually read the rule it states no more than 15 to 20 secs in advance of all crossings, finally the horn sequence is 2 long 1 short and 1 long, that last horn must be held until the locomotive fully passes the crossing and if there are multiple crossings close and back to back guess what the engineer has to do? he has to hold the horn all the way until he passes the crossings/station.
Train horns all day everyday! Not to mention, those people in Encinitas are lucky that Amtrak doesn’t have a Raised letter K5LLA horn. All hail the potato horn!!! That sounds quite awesome though. Also support the train horns and say no to them QZ propositions! Learn to like the train horns here and now!
Hey Mr "I don't know anything about railroading so I'm going to tell you how to railroad" you quoted that rule wrong. You left out the first part that says the engineer can blow the horn anyway he wants. Especially in a town with three road crossing in less than a half mile with drunks staggering around and malfunctioning gates at E st.
This is just another case of rich people whining. That railroad was there way before anyone living there. The rich folks in Newport Beach do the same type of whining about John Wayne Airport. Again, the airport was there before pretty much everyone living there now.
This engineer reminds me of LIRR 39's engineer Gabe
I'm wondering why that area hasn't been designated a "quiet zone". Is it too risky? That would shut that engineer up. You only sound the bell and can only sound the horn if there's an emergency.
I live in those condoes to but i try to take a nap and i hear that train i instly fall asleep
First of all there's no way that can be the same engineer on that same train every day for 5 years. Most likely the one who is doing it probably hit someone or had an experience there which made him/her traumatized enough to sound the horn. But also I have a hard time having sympathy for someone who lives right next to a train station and doesn't like one horn going off at 5pm, especially if this is their worst problem.
Could be Locomotive, could be getting stuck
Technically, this engineer is following the rules, they are asking him to bend the rules because they are not comfortable with the sound
