The Night Flier: Best Stephen King Movie You Never Saw

- Richard Dees is an unpleasant, churlish prick who will do anything for a story, about as charming as a rattlesnake. So when strange murders start happening at airports, he's on the case. Dees is played so terrifically by veteran character actor Miguel Ferrer that we can't look away from him; his immorality is magnetic. So it's quite the journey as we follow him in Stephen King's The Night Flier

Miguel Ferrer perfectly captured King’s sleazy character. In the story it mentions that Dees has to practice smiling in a mirror to get people to trust him because actually smiling is beyond his capabilities. You definitely get this sense from Ferrer’s version of him as well.
huh King does that with a few of his characters since I remember Harold did that in The Stand
Miguel Ferrer is one of those solid character actors that have been around forever and always gives a solid performance. Fun to watch. I gotta see this one.
@@Darkstar1484 That was my first thought too. How Harold Lauder.
May he R.I.P. Never saw a performance by him that wasn’t solid. Was beautiful to see him in Twin Peaks: The Return one last time
One of my favorites. This came out around the time of the Goosebumps series. The Night Flier was like an adult story from that. Pure nostalgia, lots of fun and too underrated.
The Night Flier scared the shit out of me when I was a little kid. Such an excellent movie.
Great movie. Horribly overlooked. That final act though *chef's kiss*
And even better in the Director's cut.
What I liked about this movie is that it made vampires truly terrifying again.
One of my favorite vampire horror movies. What I like about "The Night Flier" apart from its dark, gothic, and melancholic atmosphere, is that there is a contrast between Dwight and Dees, which makes plot interesting. What could be scarier? A vampire who arranges bloody terror at night? Or a greedy reporter, ready to do basest things for the sake of his career?
Well he shows Dees, that he’s a leeching vampire. He gives him a chance, but Dees just won’t let it go.
See u soon huh??
One of the best vampire movies out there bar none.
+1 here!!!
This movie and The Langoliers are my two favorite.
A classic Stephen King Movie. Deets is one of my favorite King Protagonists. He doesn't care about anything but himself, like a worse version of Kolchak. The fact Deets went from support cast to main protag is an amazing character arc....
This is actually quite a scary movie. A great sense of dread, throughout.
I rented this on VHS when it came out in 98 when I was in high school. I'll never forget that I was watching it early one morning when I got a phone call that one of my close friends had been brutally murdered by her mother's boyfriend. It's one of those things that intrinsically linked in my mind, I think of one and I'm reminded of the other. And while I'm a huge Stephen King fan, I never watched it again.
Good times. I'll watch with you.
Definitely one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations and the late, great Miguel Ferrer hit it out of the park with this.
This movie is amazing. One of the best SK adaptations ever put on film IMO. The last scenes in black and white and beautiful and terrifying!
The atmosphere and music give this movie a sense of unnerving dread. That is why it is so good. Miguel Ferrer hit the Dees role perfectly as well.
This movie scared the living crap out of me the first time, but always found the giant mouth approach interesting for the sake of leaving massive holes in the neck.
Miguel was an awesome actor and lived a pretty awesome life and was a very good musician. I recommend checking out as much of his stuff as you can. RIP 🙏
Agreed. The guys music was surprisingly great.
Was a fan of his the moment I saw him as Bob Morton in Robocop
He's also great in the best of the deep sea monster flicks of the late '80s, DeepStar Six (1989). Check out the underrated Flashpoint (1984) as well, incidentally like Night Flyer also connected to HBO, Ferrer co-stars here with future RoboCop co-star Kurtwood Smith.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Deepstar Six is an underrated banger. Leviathan, too.
Had no idea he was a musician, gonna check it out tomorrow
Honestly when I first heard about the trailer for Nightcrawler a few years back it instantly reminded me of this movie and I kept waiting for a vampire to show up because of the title and the similarities in the Main characters.
The scene in the bathroom with the urinal is just one of the best vampire scenes ever.
Great movie that can still be enjoyed today despite some dated aspects. The thing is if you really look close to Deets you will find that he actually is not a protagonist. In some ways he is worse than the Night Flyer because he doesn't have to live on the suffering and misery of others but he chose that path. The Night Flyer despite using a plane is very animalistic and is amused by Deets since for most of the movie Deets views the vampire as his "Prey" while slowly learning that he is a monster as well.
Yes. Dees is a leech-like vampire.
Living off the suffering of others, and he enjoys it. Dwight gives him a warning, but Dees, is a parasite that can’t realize his own lust for the “bleed it leads” story.
Well said!
This is a freaking classic that many people slept on.
The short story Popsy also goes with this one. It's in Nightmares and Dreamscapes. The book one
Miguel Ferrer was a great actor, the son of great actors. He actually played his dad's character in WW2 flashbacks in an episode of Magnum PI with his mom playing the long lost girlfriend. Good stuff.
I miss 90s cable TV. HBO was one of my favorite channels that I had on constantly. The Night Flier was a pleasant surprise when I first saw it. Miguel is always so fun to watch. His journey in the movie is very intriguing despite his personality not being the nicest but you know that from the start his obvious brash and arrogant attitude will get him to the bottom of what's going on because he's not going to let anyone get in his way of him getting the story on the front page. I really enjoy pretty much everything about this one from the practical effects, direction, score, acting and pacing. It's definitely worthy of a watch. Of course not all of the 90s King adaptations were great but this does deliver an adventurous horror story that never gets boring. Btw, The Graveyard Shift rules! Thanks, Joblo for shining some light on this little gem!
Tip of the hat for Graveyard Shift!
Night Flier and Romero's film, Martin, are my two favorite vampire films because of their unconventional take on the vapire genre. Ferrer's role in Robocob is one of my favorite roles he was in. He absolutely could have handled a leading role in films.
Damn, it’s been years since I’ve seen this movie, but I really liked it when I saw it. I always liked Miquel Ferrer. I’ll need to find this movie and give it another watch. I used to catch episodes of Kolchak on Sci-Fi channel back in the 90s and got the DVD setback when it came out in 2005. I was stoked when I heard they were rebooting it and then ultimately let down. In this TV generation now of CSI, fancy tech and a diverse team of investigators needed to solve crimes, I think a show with a single lead character that uses nothing more than his wits, intuition and inquisitiveness to do the same would be a nice change and original in a retro sense.
Me too. I have the Director's cut DVD but I never really watch those anymore. We really need this in HD on Blu-Ray.
I have always thought the protagonist made us question who the bigger monster was- him or the Night Flier….
RIP Miguel 🙏 Every interview he did, he was always asked about his mother and cousin: Rosemary and George Clooney. Every interview I saw! It was never about him as an individual performer. I know it had to annoy him at times
Miguel far better actor then Clooney.
Like many of King's stories, there is much that makes no sense in this story, but it is worth seeing it if only for Miguel Ferrer's performance. The message is actually still relevant....how headlines ignore facts in order to get attention, how the media will mislead the public in order to garner more attention. Thank you for the review...good one.
You are absolutely correct this time! I’ve never seen this horror movie 🍿
One of My favorite King adaptions. The changes from the original novella were acceptable & Miguel is at the top of his game here. A classic. Dees actually survives in the original story.
Great novel, great addaptation, great actor, great monster design...As a fan of Stephen King novels I loved this and I have always like Miguel Ferrer in all of his roles
Love this one. Great music, great characters, and a great atmosphere. Definitely underrated
I adore this movie and know a lot about the behind the scenes trivia. Fun fact, both Miguel Ferrer and Michael Moss who portrays Dwight Renfield were in Robocop movies (the later being in the third one). King loved this adaptation so much that he actually wrote two sequels to make it a trilogy and even had a script for the second one which went under the working title 'The Night Flier 2: Fear of Flying'.
It's one of my very favorite movies, which perplexes my friends. I can't ever find the words to justify it either because you either see what makes it special or you don't. I am glad no sequel was made though because it couldn't work without Richard Dees.
@@billyblim1213 A sequel was planned, but never made. In it, Catherine would have continued pursuing Dwight and there would have been more backstory on him as well.
*_I don't remember anything from the movie itself but I do remember that I and a woman I dated briefly, rented that movie from Blockbuster Video™ in 1998 to watch at her place. I had been a "budget snob" up until then and used to not want to watch any "B-Movies" at all but she helped me to change that about myself. I'll never forget that she lived on a street that had her last name! 🙂 To this day, I'll watch anything that looks interesting, no matter the budget._*
i love miguel ferrer, he was a talented actor. he exudes so much masculinity in this role that i actually root for him and find him completely attractive.
Right?! I was just praising up Miguel Ferrer's acting this morning to my gf after we had "The Stand" playing,(the original 1994 tv version), in the background on tv and it was the scene where Glen is behind bars and telling Lloyd to shoot Flagg instead of him n Flagg is telling him to shoot Glen and when Lloyd finally pulls the trigger I commented to my gf how I loved the reaction on Lloyds face at that moment right after he shoots Glen and how well Ferrer portrayed the feelings of instant regret and the inner turmoil he was going through. I heard he died just recently and always thought he was underrated as an actor. I 1st saw him in "Robocop" back when I was a kid in the 80's and his great acting even made his character in that movie memorable for me as a kid, even tho it wasn't "the lead" starring role of the flick. And then I found out that acting was in his blood and Jose Ferrer, who played the Emperor in the 1984 "Dune" movie, was his father! When I found that out I could instantly see the family resemblance. Both great actors! Miguel always stood out in his performances with that unmistakable masculine voice and his body of work speaks for itself and I hope the rest of the world appreciates the talent he had as well
**zal na ho rha hai to the🙂 world is it that you are so cute but it's also a➡➡ a➡➡➡➡➡➡ a➡ new
@@mckid2683yes his father was in alot of movies and TV shows like Columbo and they both appeared in Magnum with Miguel playing a younger version of his fathers character. Miguel was also the cousin of George Clooney if I remember correctly.
From the first time I saw it, I knew I had to have it for my library. It creeped me out from beginning to end. I just wish we could have seen the back story of the vampire character.
I recommend watching it alone at midnight. Good stuff!
I Saw this as a kid one night. It frightened my soul and the Vampire scared the shit out of me. It's really a true vampire movie.
A favorite of mine. I read the short story many times and watched the movie when it came out. Liked both, even though they changed up some of the details from the story, especially the ending.
This movie decimates. Such a unique premise as well. I need it on vhs...now!
And...I got it today on VHS as a matter of fact.
FINALLY!.... an actually movie I never saw..... I do remember seeing this title on shelves on the heyday of VHS Rentals.....
I watched this movie with my Dad when I was like 12 or something.
I always loved this one.
Its a shame it wasnt more widely known
I love The Night Flyer! Another underrated Kind adaptation I hope that you guys will cover someday is Sometimes They Come Back.
this ones special to me. I saw it when I was around 10 and it basically traumatized me. the scene involving the old couple really got me.
Up there with night flier and graveyard shift would have to be silver bullet. Love all three
The BEST SCARY MOVIE OF ALL TIME AND CANT EVEN FIND IT CRAZY PART THIS MOVIE NEVER HIT THEATERS AND THIS MOVIE WAS GOOD AF
Have it on DVD. I love it.
There was an anthology series based on various short stories by King; 'Nightmares & Dreamscapes'. Some tales from the collection of that same name and a few from other books like 'Night Shift'. Got to see couple of episodes and I was happily surprised by the the stories that were picked and how they brought them to life on screen. "Battleground" and "Umney's Last Case" were fantastic.
I love that series.
I saw this years ago. Couldn't believe it was on tv. Especially the bathroom scene.
This is one if my favorite movie. I remember watching it on basic TV at 11 at night.
The old lady scene gave me nightmares when i was about 8 lol, underrated awesome movie
This was a really good movie and Miguel Ferrer was excellent, as he usually was….he passed away far too soon, I’ll never forget him as the prick in Robocop or Deep Star Six
He was incredible as "Lloyd" in the Stand.
@@Wednesdaywoe1975 yes he was 👍🏻
The short story was great. Also can recommend "Popsy"--a tale of what happens when you f'ck around and find out with vampires.
Ahh man the vampires face is so gooooood
I love this movie. My hubby thought it was boring. It's got such a neat atmosphere.
If you get it you get it.
I was lucky enough to work in a theater that got this during it's limited run.
It probably would have been awesome to see that kind of movie for the first time in a movie theater.
Nice tribute to Miguel. 🙏
This is a good adaptation of the short story and Miguel Ferrer was the right choice to play such a douche. His fate is obviously different in the OG story, but for a movie it does fit that he gets his comeuppance
Great actor Miguel Ferrer R.I.P.
I love this movie! It's in my top 3 vampire movies! Miguel kills it in this! RIP dude *cheers*
I was around 7 when this movie was released, and my mom rented it for me from the New Releases section of our local family owned video rental store. The 90’s were so fun because it was normal to be raised on horror films as a kid, it’s all I watched… lol. But this movie, it genuinely terrified me and left a mark on me in a good way, I loved it so much! I always asked people if they had ever seen this film and the answer is always “No” and hardly anyone has even heard of it. Definitely one of my horror favorites. The special effects makeup is out of this world, much better than the CGI we are over saturated with these days.
I love your review and your channel! I’m glad I stumbled upon it
I've seen this SO MANY TIMES on Cinemax that I knew the damn Movie Line for Line.
How can you not like Miguel Ferrer. Just a cool dude and a great actor may he R.I.P.
gonna have to check this one out
This is a strange film. While watching it one can see that it has many flaws, and was made on a restricted budget, but there is also something strangely compelling and hard to forget about it. We learn a fair amount of Dees, but the story of the Night Flier is merely hinted it by some photographs found inside the really very gruesome aeroplane.
The way information is giving to the audience about the Night Flier is interesting - just bits and pieces from different sources, and we are still learning right up until just before the end
It has a pleasing end which combines some elements which are completed (Dees' life and story are now done), but the Night Flier continues on
Highly recommend King's collection of short stories "Nightmares and Dreamscapes." Some of those tales have stayed with me for over two decades now.
Julie Entwisle was sooo nice on the eyes. Shocked she really didn't do much after this film. Also I fell in love with the Cessna Skymaster after watching this film.
Finally! Ive been waiting for this review ever since you put it in the opener as a tease. Very underrated, very creepy film. I rented it from Blockbuster on a whim back in the day not expecting to like it. I was wrong.
The audiobook version narrated by Frank Muller was outstanding!
Dees? Nuts? I couldn't pass that up. I think this movie is an underrated gem. I miss the good ol Steven King movies of the 90s. I think my personal favorite, besides "It", was "The Graveyard Shift"
Always been one of my favorite movies!!
love Miguel RIP he was one of my faves
Nightmares and Dreamscapes had some zingers and this is one of them.
I literally was about 7 when I watched this and I have the VHS sitting right on my tv stand as I watch this!
I found The Night Flier in the DVD bargain bin at Walmart years ago. I took a chance with it and really enjoyed this movie!
Came home one night in the early 2000s realizing I left the tv on all day and when I saw this movie was on, it was the bathroom scene… stayed with me for years, man. A different type of scary.
One of my all time favorites..saw it late one night on TBS :)
Such an underrated film. Fave of mine.
Every time I would see a small plane flying at night, I’d point it out to my kids and say that it was the Night Flyer…and then tell the story. The kids are all teens and older now, but I still do it!
One of the best steven king movies great acting by Miguel great creepy atmospheric and gory ending best steven king vampires since sales lot
This scared me on first viewing so it holds a place in my heart. I still love it!
I just love this movie! So underrated. My favorite vampire movie with george romero s Martin and shadow of the vampire.
I love this movie. One of the best movie adoptions of King's books.
I have read the story and have the movie on dvd. The movie does a wonderful version of the short story.
I too have the DVD. Actually I have two. I double dipped for the Director's cut when it was released. Hopefully we'll get it in HD on Blu-Ray someday.
My favorite story from Nightmares & Dreamscapes.
This was a very scary movie! Another scary flick on the down low is Phantasm.
Never saw? This is one of my favs and I got it into my collection soon after it first showed. I still dust it off periodically. It sits next to my Night Slaker movies.
THIS IS IT!! This is the movie! I've been searching for this for years but for some odd reason could never find it. I honestly didn't remember much about it besides it had vampires, based on a Stephen King story, was pretty fucking dark. I had mistakenly all these years thought a pivotal scene took place in a school because I remembered an open space in a building but that was the airport! Omgosh, thank you so much for posting this video. I don't think I would've found it otherwise. This is so great, now more aspects are clicking.
That old lady scene still give me the chills
One of my favorite from King. I have it on VHS.
Oh I've seen it...Mentioned it to the Woman I am currently seeing and She said, "Oh the Stephen King story...Love it.'
Also one of my favorite vampire movies renfield
bs had it on VHS. loved it then and still do.
Seen it once a long time ago, and what I remember is it was pretty slow through most of the film but had an incredibly creepy end.
I really liked this movie -- it built up a sense of dread and unease.
In the book "Nightmares and dreamscapes" there is another vampire story that i thought were linked some way called "Popsy" about a little boy getting kidnapped from a mall and his unlikely savior...... Every time I read this story I picture the vampire from this movie....
King confirms in the forward that "popsy" and the night flier were one and the same.
@@Wednesdaywoe1975 awesome!!!!!!! I didn't know!!!! Thanks for the knowledge.
I love this Movie. The end was really creepy. Great Story 👍
This is definitely up there in my favorites like everyone else. I might watch this again today!
Saw it the theater,.2 nights in a row.Great flick.X
I watched this movie when I was 10. Got it on a Friday night at the local mom n pop vhs video store. "Scary movie 🎥 night" was what we called it.
Miguel Ferrer was great in this movie. One of my favorite actors.
Miguel Ferrer was also great in “Crossing Jordan” and he & Malcolm McDowell were fantastic in an episode of “Night Visions”, I wish I could recall the name of the episode. That was a pretty decent series.
Stephen Kings adaptations when done fast and cheap always entertain LOL I love The Langoliers film too…
Love "The Night Flyer." Among my top favorite King movies. Like to see a video on "Riding The Bullet" sometime.
