    I also put duct tape on my hiking poles and have used it many times for minor repairs. I also put reflective tape on my hiking poles so I can see them with my headlamp if I drop them and be seen by cars if roadside hiking

    What about signaling devices ? Whistle, mirror, flag. Great repair kit ideas. You inspire me ❤

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  Před 7 měsíci

      Absolutely! Whistles, mirrors and flags are all great ideas. A lot of people don't realize that there's a built-in whistle located on the sternum strap on most packs, which means one less piece of gear to carry and it's easily accessible in an emergency.

    The SPF clothes are KEY! I am allergic to many sunscreens, and the long-sleeved, hooded sunscreen shirts make it so much easier.
    And one thing I always have is a bandana.

      @TheHungryHiker  Před 2 lety +2

      Last year, I fell in love with my sun hoodie. Now I can't hike in direct sunlight without it. No more farmer tan or crazy sunburns on my arms and heck yes to having to wear less sunscreen.

    As far as the first aid kit I would consider 1-2 triangle bandages, they are super light and can be used for a ton of things including as a tourniquet if need be

    Good video. I like to carry a multi-tool. The pliers have been very useful, from removing large cactus thorns from a buddy's leg to extracting tent pegs from hard soil. Also, I believe the superglue could be used to close a wound, if needed, and it might keep it cleaner than a bandage. I suggest, though, occasionally checking any meds to make sure they have not expired in your first aid kit.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  Před 2 lety +4

      Thank you! Yes, superglue has MANY different uses out in the backcountry. This is a big reason why I always have some with me in my Gear Repair Kit for any trip I go on. Good tip on checking the expiration dates on medications. That is something I do every year. Whenever I add new medications to my First Aid Kit, I always note the expiration date, making it easy for me to know when I need to replace them.

    Great video! Years ago my girlfriend had an old compact mirror she didn’t use any more. I packed it into my first aid kit. It folds to protect the mirror and it’s plastic and very light. I think it’s Clinique. I also pack 6 q-tips. I don’t know how many bugs and stuff I have dug out of my eyes. It’s essential for me. Plus all the memories it brings back! 😉 Best!

    Ground insulation such as a inflatable or foam pad. If you go down with injury, sickness or get stranded you will be on the ground long enough to need this. Also, be sure to have extra contact lenses and solution or emergency glasses.

      @@theoutdoordogandhikinggirl You would hope so, but I've run into quite a few well seasoned hikers and backpackers who didn't know what the 10 Essentials were. Most backpackers, due to the nature of their trip out in the backcountry, will probably have most of the 10 Essentials with them. ThIs a good reminder for everyone.

    Hey, quick question if I may...
    Im a big fan of custom building first-aid kits tailored to anticipated individual needs. It always seems like a much better option than pre-made kits that have loads of unwanted bloatware.
    The little red first-aid pouch seens the perfect size for a light kit. I love the fact that it also appears semi transparent.
    Could you tell us where you sourced that? There are loads of empty pouchs around to build your own IFAK but that one looks perfect.

      This program isn’t just about content and information, it’s about the transformation. It’s about creating a safe space for women to learn, build up their confidence and get tough questions answered in a normally very male dominated space. There are lots of great resources geared out there towards a male audience. I have no doubt you’ll find what you’re looking for. Good luck! 😀

The heaviest system is my first aid kit and if an emergency were to go down on trail, I'd be okay with having the weight if it meant being able to survive out on trail and get myself (or someone else out on trail) out of a pickle.
