- After beating the Oklahoma City Thunder in game 5 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals, Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks are now only one win away from returning to the Western Conference Finals. After the Maverick's lackluster finish too last season, neither of us expressed much confidence in the Mavericks. We were both unconvinced that the backcourt of Luka and Kyrie Irving could lead the Mavericks deep in the playoffs. And yet here we are and the Mavericks have proved us wrong...

I’m a big Dallas fan all sport since I’m 5 I was always optimist and delusional with my teams That was the only time I thought Dallas was going out in the first round or even not making the play in at the start of the season

-They were tanking after the Kyrie trade.
-For a long while Luka was the number one 1v1 defender in the league and averages a steal per game.
-Every other superstar complains and flops more than Luka. Especially LeBron.
-Devin Booker is his son.
-Luka is so ball dominant because he's the POINT GUARD, and he always makes the best play.

Yah, that Luka hate you had was insane. 9th best player? Crazy takes. Plus, everyone not thinking Luka and Kyrie would never work was always premature. They barely played together and the team was still in need of improvements. It was a "let's get a co-star then get other pieces after" type move.
Also, Kyrie has been good because he feeds the hot hand. And played spectacular defense both series. On Harden and JWill. Game 4 vs OKC is a fair critique on Kyrie, because had he been aggressive then, in the 4th and shot well, the series would be over now. But otherwise, he's been doing what's needed. Can't blame him for the 3 games they won, they didn't need him to score and he had a lot of playmaking chops and defense that game. Definitely can't blame him for Game 4 vs LA. (Game 1's the whole team, just throw the tape away)
Basketball is a game of streaks. You have to manage those and the Mavs just could not hit their shots. It was everyone in that 4th quarter in the 4th game. It's also about haven the ability to dig deeper and knowing how to do that at the right time. The Mav now have that understanding how deep they have to go to get the win and how to do it.
TBH Luka Kai and washington is like the Bron, Kyrie and love version of the cavs

What people don't seem to get is how much better Luka makes the role players play. Look at FDS, Dinwiddie, Bullock, 3 key players in their WCF run 2 years ago and what have they done since they were traded? Not much, but they looked pretty good when they were playing with Luka. Dinwiddie had his better 3 pt% in Dallas, all of that are not just a coincidence.

I still think Luka's vexation over not getting MVP does have validity to it. The Mavericks were in a good place in the second half of the season, and I think Luka should've probably won.

I disagree that Kyrie wasn't good. Have you watched all the games? Kyrie was quiet throughout large parts of the games but in several games he flipped the switch in key moments and was super important imo. He kept checking in in important moments.

I cant take people who do not understand why Dallas started somewhat mid seriously. How can someone have a sports channel, talking about NBA teams, without even looking up some basic stats. Dallas was BY FAR the most injured team in the West. Overall 153 missed games by rotation players. This team was good from the start (8-2 record to start the season). They just never had anything resembling a coherent starting 5 since mid November untill early February. They had to switch rotations basically every other game. As soon as they got a fixed starting 5, the team took off!
Same with the "last year Luka/Kyrie didnt work" nonsense. The problem wasnt Kyrie/Luka together on the court. They had a NetRtg of +3.3 playing together. The problem was how bad and thin the Wing rotation was after we traded away DFS. Means as soon as one took a breather (or was hurt), we had to play guys like Ntilikina or Pinson... let that sink in! We added 2 Wing starter next to them this season and also upgraded the Center rotation big time. And look at that, the team is a contender again! Crazy how that works. 2 Stars cant win alone... So whoever thought this combination wouldnt work just doesnt understand Basketball.
I’ve been telling my old friend and family this Mavs team is special. They completely dominated the west coast version of the 2020 Nets and about to upset another 1 seed in the past three years. I hope and pray that we can play the nuggets cause the way they playing is a hot concern.

Regarding the Mavericks-Thunder matchup, I still think the Mavericks can win this series. I hope and pray that they win the next game and advance to the WCF where they'll either face the Wolves or the Nuggets. If they face the Nuggets, I believe the Mavericks will lose in 6 since their defense isn't as strong as Minnesota's is. But if they face the Timberwolves, then the Mavericks will lose in 5 because the Timberwolves defense is just too strong. In either case, I think the Mavericks might need one more piece to really become contenders and break through the wall; they have the offensive pieces and a good defensive hold, but it just needs to be a little bit better.

You should look at the injuries they dealt with the first half of the year. On Jan 16, 2024 the Mavs had used 23 different starting lineup combinations due to injuries. Kleber missed like 2 months. So yea of course they didn't look great for the first half of the year. If you remember they started off the hottest team in basketball... when they were healthy. Then made the trades, and ended as one of the hottest teams in basketball lol.
Now one thing is for sure: they were NOT playing defense like this all year. They had moments, Luka actually had some games where he played great defense, but this whole team buy in is special rn. Also Luka has had games where the numbers show he has played ELITE defense. Every game? No, but he is more than just passable rn.
Imagine, Powel and THJ are getting solid money... If we trade those two, we can get legit two 3&Ds... They are at least worth DSF ...
