Keanu Reeves is a leading man which has different demands of him and while he might not have the greatest range as an actor (and he’s starring alongside some of the most renowned character actors in this film) but he’s worked very hard for his career and it’s not anything to simply write off
As for this film, he was miscast and even he agreed he was at the time but the studio insisted; Winona Ryder tried to put forward her boyfriend of the time, Johnny Depp, but he was an unknown then.

When you think of Victorian England it makes perfect sense. It was a dreadful society where everything hinged on your reputation and status. Large newly conglomerated companies ruled the prospects of young upper middle-class men. Their assignments could make or break your future. Officers and officials like him were sent all over the world into hideous posts and pretty much told not to come back if they failed. It was a key factor in driving the empire's expansion - emotionally damaged public school men willing to face hell and high water for career and country. Whatever weirdness he was experiencing in the count's castle, was nothing compared to the infamy of coming back without a signed deal.

All I’m saying is that count Dracula’s name - Vlad or in its full form Vladislav is of Russian and Slavic origin. In Russian it means “one who owns glory”. It’s a popular traditional Russian name. Romanian language/culture has nothing to do with the Russian/Slavic name Vlad. That being said, Romania was indeed heavily influenced by the Slavs. Also as far as I know Transylvania is historically a Hungarian land, not Romanian land. Transylvania became part of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1002, and it belonged to the Lands of the Hungarian Crown until 1920. After the Battle of Mohács in 1526 it belonged to the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom, from which the Principality of Transylvania emerged in 1570 by the Treaty of Speyer. Romania is a stolen name derived from Rome. In reality Romania is former Wallachia and Moldavia that used to be part of the Russian Empire as well.

In those days it was quite common for someone to draw a weapon on you in an instance like that. It's a threat that means "if you continue this train of thought then I am going to duel and kill you or just simply kill you."
Harkers laugh was interpreted as a derisive dismissal of Draculas story and ancestry by Dracula. Which in those days when talking to a noble would easily send them flying into a rage. In that moment Dracula could have injured and sent Harker packing to which nobody would bat an eye. Harker would simply be fired and the firm would send someone else.
Blue bloods (a derogatory term for nobles or any royalty) were still a thing when this book takes place and the "nobility" still held a lot of power. What you see here looks out of place to us because now murder is illegal as well as duels and ideally nobody noble or otherwise is above the law. But back then it was pretty much the opposite.
You could challenge someone to a duel back then and even potentially kill them as well(depending on where the duel takes place and when). People would see it as a matter of honor and pride.
As opposed to nowadays where we see Draculas reaction as out of place and unproportional.
Just some context as to why Harker didn't flip out at having a weapon drawn on him.
Nobody except him would care and they would see it as his fault for insulting Dracula.

When Dracula mentions Attila, he really does mean Attila the Hun. In the book, if I remember right, Dracula claims to descend from Attila and I think it’s easy for people to miss this here if they don’t understand who Attila is or mishear Dracula. Just adds to Dracula’s own feelings of superiority.

@@anitakotevska9787 Yes, it is. A lot of the dialogue in this scene is taken directly from the book. In the book he tells Harker that his family has a right to be proud, and goes on to list all his warrior ancestors. Basically he's descended from every warrior tribe in Europe, from the Viking Berserkers, to the savage Magyars, to the Huns, including Attila, and Dracula brags about how intelligent and noble his Szkely ancestors were (Dracula's family name, pronounced sha-kye-ee) and how much the common people feared them. (He's referring to his undead body, of course, but Harker doesn't know that) He also orders Harker to help him practice speaking English - when Harker says in astonishment that Dracula already speaks excellent English, Dracula replies that he wishes to be even more fluent in English than the English themselves, because he cannot bear the thought of anyone being better at something than he is. Vlad is really quite a snob and thinks very highly of himself.

    • @BigMac8000
      @BigMac8000 Před 3 lety +25

You're in the middle of transylvania making the biggest real estate of your lifetime. They offer you an incredible amount of money to go into the middle of nowhere to solidify a deal to an eccentric who owns his own castle. You're a man of courage who wants nothing more than to retire with your soon-to-be-wife - and suddenly your entire future might be available to you, if only you can go on one trip to a reputable eccentric.
You're creeped out, but start to realize this desperate land is a place where certain people may make such untold fortunes. When you arrive, he's creepy as ever, and your first instinct is to leave.
      Hooooooowwwwwwwww?
Turn and run into the wilderness? Jump out a window? That's what he ends up doing, but long before that, what options did he have? Is it more dangerous to stay with the devil, or outside with his wolves and jackles?
When you're going through hell, KEEP GOING.
He tended to the deals for as long as possible, because the deal keeps you alive. After he stayed out of obligement. When it became apparent he was a prisoner, then it was time to get desperate - until then, your best bet is to not offend.
Meanwhile there's a genuine sense of inquiry here - Dracula may be creepy evil as fuck, but he's a man of vision who clearly longs not only for respect, company, but genuine human companionship. He may be, on the one hand, a prince of devilry, but sympathy for the devil is a thing. Dracula is not wholly evil, to be that evil is to be that close to redemption, and Harker senses that. Hope's a miserable thing, but it is one of the truest emotions there is. He's sincere in all his dealings with Dracula, whom he treats as any other man, because he is... deep down... just another man. He's pledged himself to the beast, but that doesn't stop him from being human in the end.
You have to ask yourself that, if you were in the same position, would you have the courage to stare evil in the eye, and forgive?
Renfield was driven mad by his own condemnation - he condemned Dracula, but in doing so condemned himself. When he met Mina, he had a change of heart, because he truly saw the good in Dracula, and in himself, and stopped serving him and his own prejudices. He wasn't eating bugs in an asylum because he went mad - he went there to punish himself. To condemn others is to condemn oneself, if you try to simplify the world like that.
To put it another way, in a judeo christian way, you have to believe you are a servant of god and he is there - to have the courage to believe that the battle for good and evil is outside you, and the one in your heart is the one that matters, the one you can truly win for the better of the world. I'm not religious, but that message is useful in a non-religious way.
In this scenario, Johnathon's path not only saves everyone, but it also brings Dracula to redemption, and so in a way he's serving good - and not vengeance, or killing an animal out of fear, but out of righteous retribution. He gives up a number of years of his own life in this process, going grey, but that came with it wisdom and clarity... to see that Dracula's mercy meant slaying him, as he basically was more of a wounded hell hound in many ways. That killing would be mercy - but you don't start there.
You start by treating him like a man, until you find that wound which was so long hidden.
You have to look less at Dracula here, and more consider the bravery of one man putting aside prejudice to understand another - and in this way, he saves Mina. If he wasn't steadfast and true, and had TRULY rallied against Dracula, he wouldn't have let her kill him in the end. He would've pursued Dracula into his castle and slain him - and Mina would've never forgiven him for that brutality.
      To put it another way...
When Mina pursued Dracula into his home, he knew she was safe inside, because ironically...
Dracula himself would never harm someone inside his own home, and allowing him the mercy to die with Mina, when Mina came out she truly left her own evils behind with him.
Life's a complicated road, this is all allegory and mysticism, but if you strip all that away and consider it as a story of people, what's on display is the better nature of Harker, not the staunch evil of Dracula. Harker doesn't judge him by the shadows on the wall, or his eccentric character, but by his vision and honest interactions. To do so would empower those things, which was the only way to redeem Dracula - to dispel the night truly, you have to bring a torch... but not be afraid to look at what it reveals.
It's good stuff it's just a little hoaky because this movie is *not* well made hahahahha.
