Fun Fact! The concept of magic as a sentient thing is actually the foundation of magic in D&D. It's based on the work of one Jack Vance. In his novels, spells were living things that a wizards coaxed into their mind. Even a talented wizard could hold only a tiny handful of spells in their mind before releasing them into the world. And that is the inspiration for preparing spells. It's why in older editions, each individual instance of a spell had to be prepared instead of the current spell slot system in 5e. But you can still see the bones of that concept. If you want to know more, I'm sure plenty of people have talked about it.
Bonus Fact! The name Vecna is an anagram of Vance.

One that I've done in the past is very similar to that of a druid, their magic comes from studying and harnessing nature. To him nature had a set of rules to follow and by identifying the rules you could exploit them. Fireball? In bogs and swamps methane build-ups sometimes release and can under certain conditions ignite (This is where the origin of the will o' wisp comes from), so a wizard knowing that can figure out how to recreate those conditions elsewhere. Cloud kill or incendiary cloud? Same concept, just slightly altered conditions. Control water? He just understands fluid dynamics. Shape water? Thermodynamics are fun. Mold earth or shape stone? Hello rapid erosion and/or earthen fluid dynamics (think mudslides and how they happen) Air based spells like fly? Air currents. Magic Missile? It's a stream of energy that comes from understanding atomic particles at its most base form. Necromancy spells? Understanding anatomy and physiology.

I made a eldritch knight wizard multiclass. He survived his village being razed by bandits and saw a wizard slay said bandits. He found an old spell books in the ruins and began to study but also picked up a martial weapon having to survive on his own for a long time so he's good at both magic and melee.

    Ideas:
The Alchemist: You don't cast spells. You craft alchemical concoctions (mostly Explosives). To maintain concentration you flick a precise amount of alchemical fluid every 6 seconds at an ongoing alchemical effect.
The Hedge: Yes you heard that right. A number of spells actually do not involve spell attacks or spell saves. You exclusively use spells that do not relate to your intelligence Modifier. This makes for an unusual support and utility caster. This makes you an odd Hedge Wizard with no formal training an a restricted spell list.
The Painter: This Wizard learns magic through their love of painting rather than spell book. They use a paint brush as a spell casting focus and use various magical paints for material components. They paint their spell effects onto a canvass even during battle.
The Scientist: In a futuristic setting where magic never existed, you have used various technological items to mimic spells. You are inspired by stories of wizards and studied science to one day become a real life wizard. You use flamethrower for burning hand, maybe a holographic projector for various illusion spells, a good grasp of medicine for necromancy etc.

  • @ChasoGod

One thing I see when I visualize a Wizard casting a spell is that magic circles manifesting in front of their hands, think Doctor Strange style. The higher level the spell the bigger the circle is until it is like a sphere, or other shape, surrounding the wizard containing the magical equations of runes and symbols that pertain to the specific spell/school of magic they're using. Also if they're preforming a spell that was developed by a Wizard (Tasha, Mordenkainen, ect) would have the signature of said Wizard within it as well.

I once played a wizard card shark inspired by Twisted Fate from league of legends where his spell book was a deck of cards and him casting spell involved throwing card made of magic specifically for my first casting fireball went like this:"He draws a card from his sleeve it's the Queen of hearts and with a cocky smile throws the card into the middle of the formation bursting into the flames and consuming all those around at the center a majestic woman made of flames."
He was kinda a variant of the cheat but rather uses magic to cheat at games to get money.

My High Elf Lv3 Battle Smith Artificer/ Lv17 Bladesinger Wizard Felidar Kadlynn was a total asocial gearhead specializing in practical magic application and magitech primarily cast spells through various gadgets, mostly installed in his prosthetic arm. He even made a Spellshard as his spellbook from his Infusions and mounted it as a prosthetic eye. The DM was running a mid to high level space opera kind of campaign, speed running us from Lv10-20 in 12 sessions. With Felidar focusing on utility and control spells and leaning in deep into his 6 tool proficiencies, things went ridiculous fast.

I joined a campaign at level 8 with an illusion wizard who has an interesting secret.
    He's a superhero.
Using the Mask of Many Faces Eldritch Invocation via a feat, he "dons" his spandex costume and calls himself The Bugler. He also makes himself look like a beefcake (he has an 8 in both strength and dex); but my favorite part is that when in costume, he'll incorporate illusion magic no matter which spell he casts. For example:
Catapult = picks it up and throws it, Scorching Ray = heat vision,
Fly = Superman flight pose, etc.
The only problem is... I joined the party right before they went back in time and everything went really bad. I never had time to actually play out the superhero part lol. But maybe another campaign...

Heck yessss wizards who aren't the stereotype! I once made a wizard who was inspired to take up the mantle of his mentor as the Spell Thief, where all of his spells, even the ones he learned from his mentor, were stolen, so his goal was always tracking down and stealing spells and spell books.
Something I saw as an advice for making spellcasters was to make a goal of theirs to be to learn a 5th or 6th level spell, since by any normal persons standards, those spells are crazy, so my wizard's s spell goal was "Geas"! Love this video series, congrats on 1k!

A "Better" suggestion/idea I had for a Wizard/Artificer would be a fantasy version of a SWAT team. This is an idea I've had for an Artificer. Towns Guards aren't overly equipped to handle magic for the most part. (Still working on a name but...) I have a group called B.A.T.S. or Battle Arcana & Tactics Squad, which would use different Artificer subclasses to handle magic or supernatural attacks on towns. This could be lead up by a high level wizard who adds to their growing catalogue of magic items or tactics against different enemies. Have different codes for different threat levels.
Just a working idea, the next character I want to play is an Artificer. His story would him being a Sage wanting to travel the world/planes and gather up info and to start this new organization to help the world.
Appreciate anyone who took the time to read this. Hope everyone has a blessed day!

I have some ideas on some of these units and how to re-flavor them into a tactical/magic punk feel. Example: the spell See Invisibility. Have it flavored as weird Goggles from either Ghostbusters or Hellboy. Even have a team that their specialty would be ghosts or spirits. Also other spells for tactical "breaching" you can use Invisibility to sneak in, Spider Climb would be repelling up the side of a building, Feather Fall for HALO jumps.
Aquatic missions have armor redesigned as old fashioned Deep Sea Diver Suits (have an idea of an Armorer Artificer's Thunder Gauntlet that looks like a Deep Sea Mine).
Air units could have the look of The Rocketeer.

The "Mad" Wizard Build gives me an idea for a wizard based on the movie "The Fourth Kind". Their name's Sanmi Osuns (Bonus Points if you can get the reference), he's a School of Dunamancy Wizard who struggled a lot in school until he unknowingly made a deal with an alien god named Madama Lechuza, The Owl That Came To Take Us Away, disguised as an ordinary owl bird that tapped on their window until he let her in, thinking nothing much of it, & decided on keeping her as his familiar he named Simone (Inspired by Simon from "The Owl Have Come To Take Us Away", every night, she'd possess Sanmi's sleeping body & use it to write all the right answers down in his spellbook, sometimes leaving traces of herself behind in his mind. Eventually when he graduated, his familiar revealed himself to be his patron &, in return of helping him out with graduating school, he had to help her out with patching up some holes in the Dungeons & Dragons Multiverse.

“Domains not about life shouldn’t have healing spells”
This is a very weird take from someone who’s entire channel is about flavoring abilities. It’s really not too hard to reflavor healing anyway.
For instance, we have knowledge cleric, which has no thematic relation to healing. We can reflavor healing spells as the cleric helping the body to remember its original form before it was injured. Totally in line with the knowledge cleric.
If we’re a trickery cleric, maybe we’re tricking the mind into thinking it’s healed, kind of like a magically enhanced placebo affect. Or even better, maybe we’re tricking a different god into healing on our behalf by magically pretending to be one of their clerics.
Even blaster clerics like tempest have some obvious reflavors. Everyone knows about revivify being essentially a defibrillator.
