How to Replace a Snowblower Pull Cord Starter

  • When your pull string on your snowblower snaps watch this video to show you how to replace it. The pull starter in this video is for an Ariens Snowblower, but the same principals apply for other models as well as lawnmowers.
    Don't rely solely on electric start. We all know the power goes out during many snow storms.

    Hole size is impossibly small to thread. It was like an evil carnival game. Tried wire, paper clips, needle nose pliers and praying. I had enough of that fun, and finally just drilled out the hole from the outside in. Worked like a charm. Used a drill bit only slightly thicker than the string. The wheel on my Poulan Pro is plastic. I imagine this is pretty standard, so be careful, drill slowly and don't take too much material away.

    I've found that tying thin, somewhat flexible wire around the end of the rope, you can thread it through the outside when you line up the holes. There is an almost 90 degree bend between those holes.

    Looked at a few of these videos....the mechanism you've got is identical to mine. To say getting that cord through that hole is a "bit of a challenge" is the understatement of the year. I'm going to go buy a new pull chain as the one you've got, as much as I can tell, looks very slightly smaller than the one I broke. I've been screwing with this for an hour and haven't come close to threading this through that hole - going backwards, as you've suggested. Going from the outside-in would be virtually impossible.

    • @poochie49
      @poochie49 Před rokem

      I have the same issue. Just can't get the rope thru the hole from either end. What I am going to do is drill a hole directly opposite the inner ring hole from the outside. Then I have a straight line to thread the rope.

    I have a question. I have Model 921030 & my starter assy looks exactly like yours. Just broke my pull cord. I had no problems with cord recoiling. But I tried to turn the wheel ccw and I realize there's no spring tension at all either way. So something's wrong w/the spring inside. How do I access the inner spring? I removed the Ariens sticker on front, but no access there, unless I cut metal. Is this part only replaceable as a unit? Seems $55 online Ariens p/n 20001054.

    • @everydaydiyguy7316
      @everydaydiyguy7316  Před 3 lety

      That's a really good question. I have tried to access the inside and it doesn't seem possible. Maybe a small engine repair shop would know more. $55 seems ridiculous for the whole assembly. I wish I had a helpful solution. Good luck!

      @@everydaydiyguy7316 I ordered the Ariens assy. Once i get the new one, i'll aggressively try to open/repair the inner spring. Thanks to Ariens for not allowing us access to fix/replace the spring. NOT! Trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, most allow access to the spring!

    I have this exact pull start cover. I cannot get the string through it. This is the most idiotic design possible for this part. It's as if someone purposefully made this difficult to feed the string through. In addition, the cheap pot metal nut on the end of the crankshaft stripped while I was turning the engine, trying to get it to start. Now it cannot be tightened nor removed. I will NEVER buy power equipment with a Tecumseh engine again.
