Today's guest is Eric Brakey, the new executive director of The Free State Project, a nonprofit that has been working since 2001 to get small-government diehards to move to New Hampshire and make the Granite State a stronghold for libertarian ideas. Prior to becoming head of the Free State Project, Brakey was a Republican state senator in Maine, where he authored successful legislation that expanded gun rights, legalized over-the-counter birth control, and enacted Right To Try legislation. Reason's Nick Gillespie talks to Brakey about the state of the libertarian movement, how Ron Paul and Young Americans for Liberty shaped his worldview, and how he hopes to concentrate what he calls "the libertarian diaspora" in New Hampshire.

Brakey channeled Milton Friedman there for a moment:
“I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or it they try, they will shortly be out of office.”

    My 3 problems with Libertarianism:
    1. It offers a set of rules that ONLY work if everyone agrees to follow them. The problem is... the modern Left, virtually by definition, are people who insist on breaking the rules. It's like trying to play a baseball game. Libertarians keep pointing at the rule book and saying, "Just follow these rules and we'll have a fun, competitive, exiting game." But Leftists keep striking out and calling it a homerun; or grounding out at second and calling it a triple. I mean, how can we engage with people who suddenly tell us that men who think they're women are, in fact women; or black people cant be racist; or we must throw our political rival in jail to protect Democracy? They're allowed to loot and riot in political protest-- without repercussion (mostly peaceful as the city burns in the background). But if the Right do it... the date is etched in our collective memory as a 9/11 type atrocity and the perpetrators are held in jail for years without trial. And yet... Libertarians constantly INSIST that the honest team keep playing by the rules, even if their opponent does not. In effect, this isnt a game at all. It's the beatdown of a man with his hands tied behind his back. The Right still have to use their bats to hit the ball... even though the Left is using their bats to crack skulls.
    2. On paper, Libertarians rightly view themselves as defenders of Liberty, Individualism and Free Choice. But when applied in the real world, it becomes patently obvious that Libertarians are nothing more than defenders of Debauchery, Hedonism and Social Decay. If we did expand freedoms as far as they could go without violating the non-aggression principle... we would NOT increase the amount of virtuous behaviors in the world-- we would simply increase the amount of deviant behavior in the world. We would not see a strengthening of the family unit; more discovery and innovation; or harder working people producing more. We WOULD see an uptick in ever more bizarre expressions of homosexuality; more lethal overdoes of potent drugs; and more homeless schizophrenics gleefully pooping on public sidewalks. And the Libertarians would sit back and say, "ain't freedom great!"
    3. Libertarianism is a paper theory... meaning, it's an untested idea. Well, there's nothing inherently impressive about having an idea. They're a dime a dozen. 200 ideas pop into my head a day-- free of charge. The US is NOT a Free Libertarian Society... it's a Constitutional Republic. That means, we are allowed to establish and enforce laws that violate the non-aggression principle... so long as those laws don't infringe upon very specific rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution. If, for whatever reason, an elected leader wanted to pass a law saying, 'any citizen caught in possession of a hairdryer will serve a mandatory 5 years in jail...' he's within his authority to do so. But... he could NOT pass such a law involving a firearm-- because the right to bear arms is a Constitutional guarantee. The point is... all your demands that we follow your Libertarian rules... they dont exist. If you want them enforced as the law of the land... go out, start a war with the world's largest superpower, defeat them and then establish your own Libertarian country. Until then-- what are we talking about? You've got nothing but a half-baked, untested paper theory... enforceable nowhere... that would create the United States of Gay Crackhead Sidewalk Poopers... and whose rules would be immediately broken by every Left-wing, hedonistic degenerate your society was designed to produce.

The USA before the modern BS state was a libertarian society. Right now CNN MSNBC and FOX and the CIA are propagandizing and making everyone go insane. Most countries don't have media organizations trying to make everyone go insane. Then thhey have serious consequences for going insane. The USA from the era of the mayflower up to the federal reserve, the Roosevelts started a world-wide society of nations, so up to the 1910's ish was a libertarian society.

The USA has been a libertarian society longer than it has been a big statist interventionist, big banker, mass industrialist, government schooled, drug warred society. So your main point is wrong. it is not a paper theory. Statism in the USA is a paper theory compared to the length of time libertarianism has had
