Thanks man. CZcams channels like mine get bombarded with sponsorship requests. And it has been like that for years. 99 percent of the requests are complete bs and have nothing at all to do with my channel. In this case I was willing to make an exception because the purposes of these devices is so related to what I have been working on for years. Some people might still be tired of the advertizements and I understand that as well.

I think if you maintain the approach you took for this video, occasional product appearances shouldn't be a problem. Comparing and contrasting commercial to your diy approach is much different than "Buy this because they support me." And you have a way of giving clear, easy to follow explanations. So, even better. With everything going on, finding ethical ways to increase your income is just a logical thing to do.

I think that is a very sweeping comment based on a limited if not zero experience on two stroke engines.
I have two two stroke motorcycles, a 1987 Czechslovakian CZ350 and a 1975 Russian Voskhod 175 and they are both a joy to own. The beauty of a two stroke is simplicty and power ti weight ratio. Depending on the state of tune they can be very efficient, my Voskhod will return up to 120mpg which is on par with a modern 4 stroke 125. It has zero electronics on it and can be repaired with very basic knowledge, tools and skill. If I wanted to ride around the world I’d choose my simple two strokes over modern 4 strokes every time. Also with modern fully synthetic oils they run very cleanly and on very small oil/petrol ratios.
Two strokes were banned from moto gp as for cc to bhp ratio they annailated the 4 strokes, they are still usedin applications where low weight and power are requied such as chain saws and microlight aircraft.

I know Ecoflow has been making the rounds on CZcams, but I appreciated the different take your review offered. Battery specifications and load testing are useful, but actually seeing the unit in real use means a lot. Remarkable that the Ecoflow would support a huge noisy load like that 3kW grinder, run for a couple days of work, and still have more than half its state of charge left. This is excellent real-world context. That dual-fuel generator is quiet enough, you could have it running near a tent or camper and still sleep well. Good stuff. 👍

Excellent video and as always, quite relevant. I think your AGM solution still has a place, especially if you can source most of it for cheap. The Ecoflow battery and generator run $4500, and then you have to add the solar cells. Not saying it's not a decent price, just that a DIY solution might be all some folks can afford. So I appreciate you showing it and comparing the two objectively. Either one is certainly much cheaper than putting panels on the roof, and if you have to relocate, they're portable. Thank you for all that you show and explain to us.

I know this is a very late respinse but wanted to weigh in on the advertisement/ sponsor. This is your channel and your time. Both are precious and have value. There are people who pay top dollar to see a live show, a movie, or an expensive sporting event. They dont hesitate to spend hundreds of dollars (or more) a year to be entertained by these events, yet have the hypocrisy to complain to a creator for generating revenue for a channel that they watch free of charge. See how that works? As others have said, you owe no explaination to anyone. NEVER apologize for an advertisement.

Great video, as always! I loved the "garage" for the generator.
I hate how much negativity there is around sponsorships for creators. You have made the absolute best, high-quality machinery repair videos for years, at a great personal time and expense. And you've built a successful CZcams channel in the process. I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to benefit from that hard work in the form of sponsorships.
This Ecoflow sponsorship was absolutely perfect, of course (you've got me looking at their website for products that might suit us), but I don't think you should limit yourself so much. It's not like you're promoting second-rate mobile games or imaginary titles in Scotland.
This year I accepted sponsorships from non-profit organizations such as 80,000 Hours and GiveWell, and I am absolutely not apologetic about that at all. We know you're a genuine person, and would never promote something you don't believe in, but you also deserve all of the success that comes to you, and the ability to be paid for sponsorships is part of the benefits you've eared by building your audience.
Keep up the great work! 👍

Thynk you so much for your comment man! I'm sorry that I didn't reply earlier. I simply didn't see your comment at first. One of the sad realities of social media is, that there are many channels with high quality content that don't make any money, while a lot of channels that generator nothing but trash make a killing. A lot of it has to do with a perceived acceptance of even making any money with content that might have originated in a hobbyist / enthusiast community. Many modern 'influencer' types grew up in an evinronment that was hyper-commercialized from the start. Tinkerers and electronics enthusiasts on the other hand often grew up with a 'DIY' and 'make due with what you vave' kind of mentality ( myself included). When youtube first started it seemed like a perfect fit for this community because it's all about showing physical things and sharing knowledge. But the platform has since evolved and many people (including myself) have put a ton of time and effort into this platform. For many of us it is no longer just fun and games. We have basically dedicated our lives to this. And we can only do this if it makes money. I do unerstand the audience's longing for authentic content and the good old days as well . But people need to ask themselves, if they are OK with a lot of trashy conent generating tons of money, while their favorite creators actually make next to nothing.
On a completely different note: I love your channel and have actually watched a lot of your stuff and it makes me happy to see, that you watch some of my videos!

I thought it was a ducar generator but it's not the same there are differences. Hope it's not the same as the champion dual fuel I have because it burnt the cam off in the first 10 hours. There are a couple Chinese manufacturers of these Yamaha clones (ducar sensi and probably others) you could certainly find the same thing for much less money. I took the propane stuff off the champion and put it on my generac gp2200i which is definately a ducar. It bolted right on other than the I can't change between propane and gas as easily. It has to be out of gas and carb emptied to run propane. The champion changed rpm under load differently depending on what fuel it was running on. When you hooked the propane hose up it engaged a switch to tell the computer to change the mapping. The generac running the carb off the champion on propane burns more fuel because of this but at least it didn't blow up.

Good morning Gerolf, just after I watch this video and left my comments, I went to a local garage sale that had been advertised on Facebook, as there were solar cells to be had. On arrival I found out that the seller had just replaced all the cells with a newer system. And the 2nd hand cells were 200watt units and still putting out around 85-90% of their listed performance. Now the price was the crucial, I hope you are ready. The seller was asking $20 each, which cause me to be taken aback slightly. I inspected the cells, and they were in excellent condition, so I bought ten. I was then shown the regulator unit and it cost me $100. And it gets better. I had to return the next day with my ute to collect the panels and was given all the rail and fitting to put them on my roof FREE😁. So, my project is to install them and have a battery system to back up the mains power when it goes out. I have a generator, but the batteries will be for keeping the fridges going at night. Thanks for the inspiration and keep bringing out the videos.

I really appreciate this episode. I have to admit, 3.6 kWh in such a small package is pretty impressive. But the comparison is incomplete without the cost. Given that your homemade system is made of recovered materials, yours is more likely far cheaper. Maybe that's information for your next episode.

it is absolutely cheaper to recover/restore parts, but if you value your time and factor all the effort of restoring this stuff... it adds up.

I think it’s great that you have taken a sponsor. Especially something like this that is right up your alley. It’s like you can buy this great new machinery for portable power or build it out of used things like this. Or even better, build it out used things using this new machinery.
For your generator garage, did you build a outside port for intake as well as exhaust? A little bit of insulation and that would be an awesome setup.

I think it takes balls for a company like Ecoflow to have their products reviewed by people such as you, Marty T and Matthias Wandel. All of you are well known for your integrity and your audiences respect that. Ecoflow will know that you are going to give a realistic review of their product, backed with a lot of technical expertise, and not sugar-coat anything. The fact that you speak positively of their system anyway consequently has much more impact on me than just any old ad. Well played, Ecoflow, well played.
What remains left to be seen whenever I need an off-grid power system is whether I can make it myself easily enough for cheaper, or whether there are cheaper commercial alternatives that do the job acceptably well.

You might want to add a couple of ventilation fans (powered by the generator). since an air cooled engine in a closed environment will quickly overheat even in the winter.

Well done on getting that much out of a sponsor, I have some idea of what the retail cost on that would be, which I really think should have been included in the video. The merits of one choice versus another can't be measured without measuring the costs of the options. The other issue with the Ecoflow and similar units is having ALL of your system in one unit. A failure in the charger, or the inverter, or the battery system, and the entire energy system is dead. Over the last two years I've built a solar power system, it includes 3 panel arrays, 3 charge controllers, 2 inverters and 2 sets of batteries. If one of those units were to fail, I'd hardly notice and it could be swapped out and replaced or repaired, I have spares on hand for almost everything, and the whole system cost about twice as much as what you showed there.

We used these types of generators back in the 80’s in the Army, and we where always digging a hole for it, and then we took the end of the long flexible exhaust pipe and put I down a big bucket with water!
And by doing that I was very quiet!👍😁

  • @greenaum
    @greenaum Před rokem

Just something I think might be useful that I read in an off-grid book...
Showers: Electric showers use a huge amount of energy. Showers running from a tank heated by fuel use less so. But what an off-grid user discovered, was that the majority of the energy going into a shower's water, is actually used to heat up the air in the shower cubicle, to make the user comfortable.
Air takes a lot less energy to bring to a temperature than water does. So a good off-grid shower might use an efficient way of heating the air, and retaining that warm air, while heating much less water. You can also save shower water by having "navy showers". That is, you run the water to cover yourself in it, then cut it off. Soap yourself up, then run the water again to rinse the soap off. Only run water when it's actually being used for washing.
Something I also observed, if you have a bath with a shower attachment, is to keep the plug in. That way the warm water stays in the bath, keeps your feet nice and warm, and gets to give all it's heat to the room, rather than warming up your drains.
There might also be benefit in feeding warm water to your washing machine. Modern ones just have a cold intake, no longer one for hot, and electrically heat the cold water themselves. As well as taking longer, it's wasteful for people who have gas water heating, or any other non-electric kind. If you wanted to, you could even investigate making your own controller board, take the existing board from a washing machine and wire in an Arduino, using the machine's existing relays and triacs to control the motor, heater, and pumps.
