Why do you need to remove the cylinder piece when it looks like you can adjust the position of the needle on the skrew above the removed piece. Is the metal cylinder piece blocking it?
I had this problem but then discovered it was because my dial was set to the zigzag stitch. I suspect the needle uses a preset position only for zigzag since it moves from left to right when stitching. When i switched back to straight stitch then i could move the needle left, right and center using the dial. I see yours is set to zigzag also in this video.

My hero! It's hard to get a zipper installed when the needle won't move!
So it’s aligned to the middle. Does it move L and R now? That’s the problem I’m having.
It wasn’t moving because you had it set to a zig zag stitch.
