How long will your baby cry during sleep training?

  • I get asked this question all of the time. Parents are understandably worried about causing their child distress. It's a terrible feeling when your child is crying even if you know it will help them sleep better long term. Fortunately, a 2018 study looked at real world sleep training and showed that crying peaked on the first day and resolved within a week. Moreover, the parents were really happy with the resulting improvement in their child's sleep.
    Here's the article referenced in the video:

    I tried the Ferber method with my 9 month old, I couldn’t bare his crying after 20mins, by instinct to go get him and comfort him was too strong, my husband was the same, we could not leave him crying and in a state. Now getting a floor bed to get him use to sleeping on his back and not on me but me still be by his side, till it’s the ninja slip away.

    This is very in line with our experience. We did it at 5 months and within a week she was no longer crying once in bed. It took another week for her to not be upset before going down. Then she had to go on propranolol and she was one of the small percentage who experienced sleep issues from it. Through different trials (non-generic and then finally a different medicine) we got the sleep affect under control but lost all sleep training. Sleep training again at 11 months was MUCH harder! But worth the effort! Other than teething pain or sickness, she sleeps like a champ every night and nearly every nap!
    Your resources were very helpful and reassuring.
    I think the hardest thing, and this is something you don't really address, is that it went against our parental instinct. Everyone says to follow your gut and, for the most part, I agree. But this was a case were I had to choose to do something very against my instincts. Still, I let science and expertise win out over "gut feelings" and I am glad I did!

      Justin Winokur thanks Justin. And great point about the parental perspective.

    Thank you for sharing this, currently going through “2 years sleep regression” at 22 months-previously amazing at sleeping independently. Day 2 of the CIO technique and it is tough, but we’re being consistent at bed and night waking
    What to do if toddler falls asleep whilst sitting down - wakes whenever we try to lay her down and the crying cycle restarts for another period! :(

    Thank you for your content! We read your book this week on the recommendation of our pediatrition and our 5 month old's crying went from 25 minutes on the first night to 3 minutes on the third night. We are trying to use the same principals now for naps. Our baby has such disorganized/few/short naps that he always seems tired and grumpy during the day. He gives tired cues past 4pm so we have been trying naps with him because he would be a mess if we tried to hold out until bedtime (around 7:30). Napping in the crib is still new (used to only nap on mom after nursing) and hes having a harder time than with overnights (crying for 45 minutes). Is it too early to try this method (CIO) for naps? And is it fine to do naps after 4pm if he seems to need it and it doesnt derail bedtime?

      Thanks. Napping is really hard. Not sure if you saw this article. drcraigcanapari.com/Nap%20problems/. In short, CIO is ok for naps if you think your baby is sleepy. Be aware that a later nap may result in a later bedtime.

    Any tips about nap sleep training? My daughter has always struggled with naps and I feel like it’s crazy to let a baby cry for an hour during the day when they need multiple naps. But if that’s what it takes then that’s fine too I just want to make sure if it’s different than night training. I’ve tried to research this but I feel I can’t find the right answer to my question. :) thanks for the video!

      Same here! We are struggling to figure out naps. But all the information out there seems to just be on night sleep training.

    Hi I sleep trained my baby 11 days ago. She hardly cries now while going to sleep but still wakes up in the middle of the night and cries. I offer her a bottle and she goes to sleep but then from last couple of days she is waking up 2-3 times. Don’t know what I’m doing wrong? Any tipsss??

    I have a 6th month old. He wakes up 5 times. I haven’t had a good nights rest in over 6 months. I honestly don’t know how I am able to function or even work.
    The problem isn’t getting him to sleep, he cries and goes down from 3-10 minutes. The problem is to keep him asleep. What gives?

      Hard to tell in this format. Would definitely meet with pediatrician and go through common causes (fluid in ears, eczema, feeding issues). Good luck

    What about when they wake up mid-night? We are going in to change him but then he cries for 30-60 minutes.

    • @CraigCanapari
      @CraigCanapari  Před 4 lety

      Hard to know without knowing all of the circumstances. In general best to avoid night changes by using night diapers or double diapering, especially if your child is falling asleep independently at bedtime. I would talk to your pediatrician who can take in account your child’s feeding schedule, age, weight, and medical history. Good luck!

    My 4months old baby, on first night took 80min.
    He was fed, diaper changed and in his basinet like usual!
    Wish it was 45min lol

      For my oldest : 80m first night, 10m second night, then we were done. Hope it went similarly for you.

    Can you sleep training 4 month old while still swaddling?

    • @CraigCanapari
      @CraigCanapari  Před 2 lety

      It’s tricky. If your child is rolling (or going to roll soon) you need to stop swaddling for safety’s sake. Based on your baby’s age, I suspect you need to do so soon. Maybe it’s better to stop the swaddle and sleep train at the same time. (if the prospect of this fills you with dread, I get it. My older kid really needed the swaddle to sleep.) If you’re not sure how to proceed, totally worth touching base with your pediatrician. Good luck!

    • @mar91a
      @mar91a Před 6 měsíci

      I agree with you. This method is cruel, indeed. You basically leave a baby to figure out how to go to sleep without any help. There are others, gentler methods with very little crying.
