Hey gang if you use the claw on the bucket where you've been blowing out it will prevent that. Get to the point where you can't go further, then close the claw to come at it from the other angle. This will create your "guide lines" and loosen up the dirt without letting it blow out.

Hey guys great content, watching them with the my two year old son and he loves it!! One suggestion, put up a camera on the edge of the old house and capture the entire build! It would be wicked to see a time lapse video of the whole project:)
So there I was...just a laborer on a private school ~15,000sqft expansion... I got close and personal with the plumbers...because they use backhoes A LOT. Well, the project was big enough for two backhoe operators (at times). One day, a guy named "Rocko" had to locate his backhoe in a spot that was criss-crossed with deep trenches, and other obstacles. "Rocko" used the bucket, the hoe, outriggers and wheels to "walk" the machine into position. "Walk" is the incorrect word: more like CRAWLED LIKE A SPIDER! And he was QUICK! Rocko was putting on a show... in less than a minute, he was in position. My jaw dropped, I'd never seen anything like it before. I have a loud voice, like a stentor. I yelled out, "HEY ROCKO, YOU ARE A BACKHOE DANCER!" So loudly that you could hear me in the next county. Word got around to the other equipment operators. All butt-hurt, they would retort, "Hey, I can dig too!" This is the point: it takes a while to become "a backhoe dancer". It's better to be safe than sorry! Take yir time. Those rascals can cause tremendous damage in an instant....costly....deadly.
This is truly an amazing thing that you guys get to do this. The attention to detail and way dad builds makes for a great home when you’re all done. The memories you’re all creating and the pride you’ll feel after it’s done and you’re living in it is priceless. It’s the kind of thing only a few can ever say. Usually from 100’s of years ago some ancestors have given a select few the privilege of being able to say something like my great-grandfather built this house with his own hands. Now perhaps Jordan’s kids can say the same one day about you guys. Enjoy it and thanks for bringing us along. Cheers from Philly.

Paul, don’t fret if make a mistake when speaking or get embarrassed, just keep going, maybe joke about it; but I wouldn’t stop an o a retake; as shows “real life” and no one is perfect. Actually like seeing the “outtakes” at the end every once in while, always funny especially when have tongue tied wording, 😆, but for me, imo, not big deal…..just wanted you to know.

I drove by a new commercial building that they were digging the foundation.
In the past, I would have just looked at it like, why are they digging all that dirt out?
Thanks to your video I was able to put together what exactly they were doing and how they were doing it.

As a gardener, I see some berms in your future with that deep back yard. It would make it a really enticing landscape. Landscapers always recommend adding curves that draw you down the path to explore more of whatever is hiding behind that curve.

What you were wanting to do is called spin off \ out of your trench \ ditch... It is difficult and it puts a lot of pressure on one side so with the dirt you were working on, you would have collapsed your trench anyhow. 🤷♂️
A pro tip... Curl your bucket so the teeth are parallel (flat) with the bottom of your trench then stick in, this way you get a very nice flat bottom trench without any over dig from the teeth. It helps keep the bottom of the trench compacted better. 😘
Oh yeah and watch out for houses they can jump out of know where 🤣

Hey gang you guys are doing a great job for newbies to ground up construction. I have been in the construction industry for a little over 33yrs and having done many projects even the seasoned contractors have issues with different things but being able to overcome them and pushing on is the main goal. Good job! The form repairs are minor and there are a few different methods to fixing that. I wish u guys were closer to me I would love to hang out for no cost and share some knowledge with you on your journey but I'm in PA. That's a little too far! Keep up the good videos cant wait to see it complete.
Per usual, highly elucidating and very entertaining. Really enjoying your team work and how well the uploads are produced. I remember when Burt Reynolds was the first to put outtakes at the end of his movies for the credits to roll over. Now instead of everyone hitting the doors asap, we hung around for the extra laughs. Great to see the tradition continue.
Pro tip, when you say the controls are backwards I assume that’s in reference to the first excavator you rented. All excavators have two types of controls, backhoe and excavator. I think on that model if you lift the rubber floor mat there’s a panel with a valve under it. One label may say ISO. If you turn that valve it will reverse the controls. I learned on backhoe so that’s how I like it. Everyone I worn with prefers ISO so I always have to switch them. This takes me back to my first days on an excavator when you treat it more like a truck. I mean worried about falling in the ditch or turning over, etc. once you get used to how bottom heavy it is combined with how the boom can basically pick the thing up, you get way more comfortable driving it.

@@StudPack It's probably a little late but I also wanted to mention that the back of these machines have a huge counter weight. Just so you are aware, a lot of time when your bucket is empty and you are not reaching out with the boom, the back of the machine (opposite side of the boom arm) is the heavier side. The huge counter weight allows you to reach out and dig without the machine tipping into the hole you are making. Just check out around the engine bay area, it's all a huge block of solid cast iron that's only there to act as a counter weight to the boom. Pretty common on most machinery of this kind.
This is why you will usually back these machines onto a trailer so the heavy side is adding more tongue weight.
I say this because when you were backing over the trench you actually had the heavy side going first.
Lol yeah the blade is always the forward direction regardless of which way the "operator" is facing
I think he was only referring to the travel controls as he had the final drives facing forward, but what you said is still correct

I had a thought - Although it may take away a bit of the anticipation for the videos every week, have you ever considered just setting up a camera on the roof of the house and live-streaming your work on the foundation? Just ambient noise, so nothing crazy with audio… might be cool to see who is interested to watch you guys work live. Might not be worth it, but I’ve seen other folks do live streams like that. Good work guys. For future reference, you might want to look into powered wheel barrows, or what some people call a Georgia Buggy. They can carry a bigger and heavier load. Especially helpful if you are going to have to wheel barrow concrete. I know for this pad you have the concrete subbed out, but check them out, who knows when "knowledge is power".
I agree. I have a Whitman powered wheelbarrow with a 13 horse Honda. You only have to handle the material once that way. Load it straight from the excavator bucket into the wheelbarrow. I can fit about 2000 pounds in one load and it can transport it faster and cleaner than a skid steer in tight locations. It's also good for removing large amounts of concrete from a back yard
They need a skid loader not a buggy
@@lightningdemolition1964 and Dallas. Dudes, you're dead right! A powered wheelbarrow is out of this world. I'm thinking about modifying one of my Jackson's with a motor. Or just cobbling wheels on the legs. It would be a start. I know an older guy who loves his landscaping, flower pots, various decorative stone pathways, etc. I figure that I'll make a nice one for him: wide foam filled wheels all around, because they'll be gentle on his yards and his pristine concrete. He has a small lot, so nothing beefy is necessary. Yeah, that would be cool.
I have a DP Power Wagon with a dump... fantastic investment. Holds up to 800 lbs and can even turn into a flatbed. Rocks, dirt, brick, sand, whatever.

In our area, a builder would just scrape the lot fairly level, bring in some sandy fill, dig the minimum footings and pour the slab. The homeowner gets to enjoy the cracks and foundation leveling that comes later.

I love how the project is coming along. For the house foundations though... you might wanna reconsider the order of operations, and instead of digging down to solid clay, fill with select fill and then dig. You might wanna dig down to solid clay, set up forms all the way down to the solid clay for the foundation and then use select fill in between the beams and compact it. That way you have perfect foundations, and you are not paying for select fill that you later on have to dig out or have it taking up space in your site. Another way would be to use just a thin layer of select fill on the bottom just to level it under the forms and then do the beams and the select fill. Just a thought! But like you said... learning this stuff as you go along. I’m sure other people commenting on your videos have great tips on how to dig and stuff. Make use of the community that you built here guys 🙂

First time I’ve ever heard anyone actually cuss on the channel! Reminds me how good your manners are. Just wanted to give poor Jordan a hug, there’s nothing worse than doing something like that for the first time and everyone just watching (in silent approval) while you don’t know what’s actually going on under the machine! Now it sounds like family working! 😂 I work with mine and there’s usually a few blue streaks in the air, from multiple people, and often at the same time!

Hey Jordan! You're doing good. I see that you're learning how valuable the Thumb is on that bucket. I wouldn't want an excavator without a Thumb. Two in One tip for ya: If you had to back over a ditch even wider than your 16", keep in mind that if you extend the boom further away from you, it will give even more counter-balance. Plus, a LOADED bucket gives you even more leverage.

Watching stud pack it's one of my favorite channels on CZcams. As I watch I think about what I would do. When I was watching your breaking out the wall with the excavator I was thinking I would have started at the closest point and use the teeth on the excavator to push the dirt away from me and then Dug a way down from the far side and continued that until I got to the depth. Since I have no experience with an excavator I'm curious if others watching agree with that or not.
