I agree. Jan. 1 was a day for resolving all the drama of who would win the title, and for admiring the sunny weather in most of the bowl venues as we gazed at the snow outside (depending on where you lived). And the Christmas tree was still up, adding a nice trim to the scene.

Early in the 1977 season, this game would have been a Texas rout. Notre Dame went from a struggling program with "Fire Dan Divine" bumper stickers around South Bend -- to one of the greatest college teams ever. The Irish blew away the undefeated No. 1 team, with a Heisman Trophy winner as great as Earl Campbell. And did so in Texas' own back yard.

73 sugar Bowl had #1 Alabama vs Irish. Todd was QB. Wilber Jackson rb, John Hannah was on off line I beleive. Woodrow Lowe was a lb. A couple other studs. Irish had Casper and? Clements at qb was Canadian qb who was a coach for years in NFL. Bob Thomas who kick for bears. They had Neihaus at D tackle but that was it. That was a game with 2 great coaches with a month to prepare. With irish up a point Bama had ball 4th and 1 at irish 40. Bryant had 2 punters and pinned irish inside 5 with his pooch punter. If he didn't make 1rst at 40 irish could flip field. Only 3 minutes irish have 3rd and 12 at 3. Ara calls a dropkick pass and Clements throes to the 3rd string TE who hadn't caught a pass all year. Throw was behind him but kid pulls it in for 30 yard gain. Robin Webber. Like Roland Sayles for razorback in 78 orange Bowl. Texas lost, Michigan lost sooner win game and Are #1. Yet Lou Holtz who had suspended his to top backs and top receiver night before pulled out his motivational playbook and razorback defense who is used to wishbone shut sooner down in first half. Meanwhile they used the soph who had 20 carries all year run for a record 205 on 22 carries. Watched it a couple years ago and after a quarter it was clear the field was in horrible shape. Sooner bone was negated running outside pitches while Razorbacks veer runs were just straight dives. Look at Georgia winning vs Irish in 81. Walker had 36 carries for 155 or so. Buck blue? Had 2 for9 for 30 yards. Yet they won 17-10. Only cause irish fumbled 1 ko inside 20. Then misplaced another that Georgia recovered at ten. Nebraska in 84 was loaded but ran into the Schnellenbeger Miami team. He built that program. He told them he needed to fly to Jersey then Pittsburgh. Then next Dat to Chicago then back to Miami. 36 hours. He was told that there isn't money for you to fly around country to get players. He said I am getting a TE from NJ. CHUDSINSKI. Then I am gonna get a QB from Pittsburgh suburb. Jim Kelly. Then go to Chicago and get a dlineman. When asked where are you going to get players from? There is 1 million kids within 40 miles from here. I will find them. They beat Huskers only cause Osborne went for win. That team had 11 12 pro players. In 90 irish had Ricky Watters, Culver, rocket, Bettis, Brooks brothers, and Levens. 7 backs in pro. Only 5 stayed. Also Carter who played dB back in pros. Q7 guys plus Dubose and Bryant young . That's 19 guys. Lost to Miami in ladt game 89? Miami had a loss but got title cause head to head win. FSU lost to irish but they list next week to BC. So FSU gets title. Then Colorado wins first Orange but 2 ND Rockets punt td with 2 minutes left is called back for a bad call. Miami is let off the hook 3 4 times by FSU. In last 10 years the sec is good but they all play warmup games to start then have a bye week then another cupcake to end season. Why don't they let. James Madison or Ndst, the AA programs that have been on top for last 10 years. He'll even Kansas has gotten smart and hired a good young coach to build. 70% of High Schools run speed offenses. You can compete in college now without 300 lb lines and 4 5 star kids. Central Florida has a ton of money and just can recruit 2 3 star kids from Tampa to Daytona. They are 6'2 280 lb lineman who played at great programs and have played since so year against Florida's best. Miami,FSU and especially Gators have ducked them since they became d1.

Notre Dame's defense was phenomenal all year that year. Montana was not the starter in the beginning of the year and they lost their first game to Ole Miss in 98° heat with 90% humidity and Montana started his magic that year. He came in when the Irish were trailing brought them back, still didn't get the starting job but after his next comeback there was no way Devine could keep him from starting.
Texas had a great team but they were one-dimensional with Earl Campbell and they hadn't faced a defense like the Irish had all year. When you turn the ball over early, fall behind and you have a ground and pound style offense and you're facing a fantastic defense it's going to be a long day. That's exactly what it was for Texas.

Wow!!! I thought I was the only one who remembered the Great Rusty lisch. He played with Cards for 3 years 81 2 3. Then of course the powers that run the Chicago Bears thought Rusty was a guy to run bears offense behind Fuller cause he was playing cause McMahon was out. So the Bears and every team in NFL passed on Montana. Walsh didn't realize he was still there in 3rd round. Well that turned out OK. Bears had Vince Evans, Avellini, Phipps. The Bears made the playoffs in 77. Avelinni 13 29 177yds 4 into. Boys 37 7. 79 Phipps worse passing yards only 2 ints. Philly 27-17. Dallas game Staubach only 117 passing and only 200 on ground. Same with eagles but 200 front Jaworski and Wilbert and others 150 on ground. Bears only lost by 10. It's not like you don't have talent. It is more like you have no offensive mind. You have Walter Payton. They are daring you to throw, so throw safe passes. Ditka screwed the bears players with his ego. He didn't build defense or Offense. He should of let McMahon just do his thing. Like vs Vikings on National TV. Like AK Davis did. He always had a deep threat and every 10 12 plays would just throw a bomb. Just to keep them honest. Gault took 3 years just took locate then catch then do it all to just run under the ball. I don't think anyone could run with him, even Green.
