Who’s listening to this masterpiece in 2024?
Good memories
Never stopped. Love them!
Me too. February 5, 2024.
Great song
I wore the “Walking Wounded” CD out back in the day.
There was once a time, before the internet, when people could vanish from your life forever and you relied on music like this to fill the void they left..
Yes, Just think that we all went out to play with our friends for the last time and non of us knew it.
That's good
Whoa
The first time I fell in love (and as I often think, the only time) was with the neighbors' friend when I was about nine or ten. One day, she suddenly vanished, and I pined for her for years upon years. Ages later, I found her on Facebook...engaged. That's one lucky dude in those pictures...
I don't know why but your comment gave me goosebumps
This is not just a song it’s a feeling. The saddest part about nostalgia is knowing you’re never going back
I don't know if this will help but somebody once told me this, "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened in the first place" 😃😃
Damn!! The truth hurts.
So true...so very true
Dang, that's brutal reality of it.
25 years
It will never be like it was in the 90s. What a time...
La mejor época q vivimos está en nuestra mente. Nuestros corazones
💯.........The good days!!!
i was born in the mid 80s i love this song
As someone who hasn't even existed in that era I find that so facinating. I discovered this song in 2019, so it reminds me of being 15, so I sorta have nostalgia for that "era", but that was 5 years ago and feels like it's been a lifetime, let alone to remembering this song coming out 30 years ago in 1994!
MID 90S was actually a great time for music
And fashion
Agree
And movies. Basically, the last time everything was still good.
We don’t search for old songs..
we search for old memories.
❤️😭no words. This comment is so true. Nostalgia is hitting hard rn..
This hits hard fr. Nostalgia just hits different
This. Such a short statement that immediately hits home 🤘🏽
To tears randomly. I'm 8 y.o. and my parents are listening to this on the patio. Love my life...
Why is this comment on every single music video over 2 years old?
Hard to believe this is almost 30 years old. My, where has time gone ?
It's like visiting the house you grew up in after years and years away.......still expecting to see Mum!.
I could write an essay about how ridiculously underrated this track is. Simple yet haunting.
I absolutely agree on this. Absolutely.
Facts, and you should! It’s much needed, especially for this era.
I agree. But some people were falling in love with it - tout de suite
maybe you could write an essay on the meaning of "underrated", which this song certainly isn't. It was a huge hit back then, and is still playing on the radio.
zimzimzalabim thank you; so many people are throwing this word around these days and I don’t think they know what it actually means!!! I’d say the words they’re looking for are undervalued or underappreciated.
This song was severely underrated.
is
"Missing" charted high in several countries and reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1995 and spent over seven months on the UK Singles Chart thanks to an extremely popular remix by Todd Terry which later led to a Brit Award nomination for Best British Single. Everyone I know who knows this song adored it, it's a work of genius.
Sade
But was a huge hit in 90s
@@danbrockettDOP It was actually the Todd Terry Club Remix of "Missing" that was a major hit in several countries. The lesser-known original version, as heard in this video, did poorly on the charts for whatever reason. The original version only charted in the UK and it peaked at a measly 69. It's a shame more people aren't familiar with the original version, as it's a great track, in my opinion. I love the beat, acoustic guitar and keyboard sounds. I'll even go as far as to say I prefer the original version over the Todd Terry remix, but that's not to say that the remix is bad by any means. I love 1990s house/club music.
Before the internet, cell phones and social media, when you broke up with someone and you lost all contact with them, sometimes walking by their old address or places you both used to hang out at or having old photographs was the only way to remember and relive those memories. Sometimes people change their names or move to other countries and stay hidden or are lost forever. This is such a melancholic masterpiece of a song and a missive to lost love.
I have just read this and had to comment .What you have said is so true and actually very moving .As you suggest perhaps the " ships passing in the night" has disappeared .Anyway ,your comment was very thoughtful ,many thanks .
Once had a gf/lover that would just up and disappear... then pop up 5 months later in another state. Drove me bonkers and I begged her to not do that again. But she did. Although the last time, two years went by without a word. Found an obscure address on the internet and sent a note. Two says later a nice lawyer called and told me she had passed away due to early onset Alzheimers. That one will always hurt, but at least I know.
When I was 17 I dated a girl called Nicola. I loved her so much. I'd love to see her again just to see if life worked out well for her. I hope she's happy.
So very true! I definitely did it!🙏😢

So you don't miss the '90s? Because deserts don't miss the rain. They wouldn't exist if it did rain more.
Like the deserts Miss Lorraine!!😉
This song came out very shortly after my wife died.
Every time I go home and walk down Delmar in St Louis oh, I hear this song in the back of my head.....
It's a Bittersweet memory that I'm not real sure if anyone would ever truly understand.
I didn't have a wife die but I lost my soulmate, I loved her...she found a better place, which I could never hate her for that
This stopped me in my tracks. Bless you. Bless her.
Your comment gives me chills. The pain I approach at the foot of the thoughts of losing my loved one is worthy of total breakdown. My hats off to you dude, much love!
Condolences. I understand.
My sincerest condolences :(

One of the best songs of 90s
@Flying Turtle probably when somebody posted the video but this was a song from the 1990s then a classic dance mix reallllly made it well known round that same time and its just been an unforgettable song.
Javier Martinez indeed
@Flying Turtle no prob. Its great nonetheless. Just enjoy it lol
Actually the Todd Terry Club Mix Version of this song was one of the best songs of the 90's, that's the one we really remember czcams.com/video/A65qo0U5630/video.html
It was the #1 song AC of the whole decade of the 90's, according to Billboard Magazine.

@@Aiphiae wow I totally agree
This song will always bring me back to a very difficult time. Good lessons learned then.
2:24 A bold creative choice that has made this music so exceptional. Almost no melody, only meaningful words. What an experience to listen to this, even years and years after hearing It for the first time.
I used to listen to this as a child, now I'm literally feeling this music.
In the 90's if someone moved and you didn't have their info.. they were just gone forever
Nikki Nova It’s almost better that way. Sometimes you reach out to them and hoping they might respond they never respond.
In a way sometimes it’s best to just let people that don’t matter to you go.
Yes that's so true. Also sad. Depending on how much you missed that person especially if was someone you were with and in love with for years. And still are and always will be. 😥
That happened to me in Co Durham in 1994 !! Ironic you wrote that years after, who are u ?? X

When my father died my sister and I were encouraged to go out with friends. This was played and I remember my sister and I just looking at each other with the lights dancing across our crying faces. Two weeks ago we lost our mother and this song has just come up on my feed.
My wife passed away three months ago and I keep thinking of this song and how much I miss her, as the song says so well, like the deserts miss the rain.
Much love mate. Sorry for your loss. Better to have loved once than never loved at all.
I remember listening to this song shortly after my dad died. I was laying on the bed, it was Summer and I felt a sense of emptiness and longing. This song was like a caress in that moment.

Thank you for sharing such a deep moment in your life. I'm in my 50's and trust me growing up in the 70's into the 90's music was at its best. Hearing this brought me back in time. I remember the first time I heard this. I did not lose a family member. I just broke up with my girl and this song really expressed how I felt. The only song that can touch this is by Lazarus Q song good by horses. Again thank you and I pray that you are in a stronger place in the universe. Peace

Well said, Joseph. This is not a happy song for me, but I still love it.
I agree with u

Heard this song today while out shopping and broke down crying on my way back home. Really missing my wife who died from cancer two years ago. :(
So sad. Sorry for your loss
I'm so sorry friend. F cancer!
I lost my dad to cancer in 2008 I feel your pain and I was deployed in the Marines. I did get to say goodbye on the phone.
@@charles1203 I'm so sorry to hear that. My dad is still alive and 82 now, almost 83, but my mother died at 49 of cancer, sadly. Losing my wife whom I knew since I was 15 and married to for almost 37 years was the absolute worst though. I cried daily for over a year. It's been almost two years now and it has settled down a little, but still cry every few days and I doubt that will ever go away... we had an excellent marriage. Not perfect, but we rarely argued (I don't recall arguments honestly), said "I love you" to each other at least three times a day... I wasn't a womanizer so I didn't really date women before her, so I am totally lost now and I HATE being single. When you're supposed to grow old together and suddenly she's taken away so fast... I don't know what to do to be honest. Feeling totally lost and alone. Only prayer has helped me.
So sorry 🎉m😢
This song is so sad and beautiful at the same time.
Only Annie Lennox, Tracey Thorn and Sade Adu can sing like this.

2024....1994 Amplified Heart....still rocking with Everything But The Girl.
I worked at Sears when I was younger, and they would play this song over the store speakers sometimes. The rest of their playlist was terrible, as was the job, but discovering this song almost made working there worth it. I quit after a few months and moved on with my life-traveled, experienced the world, went through a heartbreak or two.
A decade later, as I approach thirty, this song has started popping back into my head. I think back to my eighteen-year-old self folding clothes at the store, this song playing from the scratchy speakers in the ceiling, and I realize there's no way I could have really understood what this song was about at the time. I'm only just now beginning to understand. It resonates more and more as time goes on, and lately has begun to give me goosebumps each time I hear it.
Thank you for the wonderful music, EBTG.
Same for me!
Raul Castellanos Jr. thats beautiful
Cant believe im 25, music really brings u back to moments hey. Time is beautiful.
What’s a sears?
Raul Castellanos Jr. I used to work at sears too! And I remember they would always play that Avril Lavigne song complicated.
Some songs just can't never be forgotten!
I'd be honored if some Everything But The Girl fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of PRAYING FOR TIME and MOTHERS PRIDE on my YT channel in tribute to George Michael. George stated that EBTG vocalist Tracey Thorn was an important influence on him starting in the early 90s, and you can hear that influence on his masterpiece 1996 album Older and his later works. George and Tracey are 2 of the greatest vocalists ever, it's a shame they never collaborated on a song... thanks and peace.
"just CAN never...."
☹I first heard this in 2009 the week before my beloved Anita took her life. 2024 and I still can't move on but still love this beautiful song.. And I miss you.....
So sorry for your loss😢
I lost my mum in July 1984... hadn't spoke to her for 2 years, thinking I could make up with her when the time was right. Sadly she died suddenly at the age of 50😢 I was distraught and desperately missed her. My sadness could not be described in words...and I was full of regret for each second that I had away from her....that is until this song hit the charts. Listening to it, initially my grief hit me hard just like it did when she passed away. Every word of the song resonated with the feelings of my loss and grief. After repeatedly listening to it and crying over the next year or so.... my tears slowly subsided and I started remembering the wonderful happy times we had together.
So this song was the turning point in my life when I started slowly recovering I suppose. I will never stop missing my mum as long as I live, but I have learned to live comfortably with her and my beautiful memories of her in my heart ❤
I pray that you find the same peace as I do now🙏🏽🕊🕊🕊

He is right she has a lot of emotion in her voice
John
your father has very clean ears, I also loved this song before and after I learned English, Tracy is a very underrated singer/performer
I notice that with specific Japanese singers such as Jun Togawa. There is a lot of talented ones who fall through the gaps. Even those who were once big seem to not appear on the radio or get spoken about until they die which is sad.
He's right. First time hearing this one.
90s...almost 50 and it's by far the best. If we could rewind, that's where I'd visit. Many mistakes but so many memories💕

Everyone wants their youth back. I want nothing to do with the 90s. They were miserable for me personally. But I get it...
Hi Tracy,hope you’re okay ?
For me this has always been a song about longing…for things or beloved person lost that you can never get back no matter how much you look. Sometimes we know better to just let go but in the back of your mind you can’t help searching. That’s what this song always felt like to me.

Lyrics:
I step off the train
I'm walking down your street again
And past your door, but you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
Now you've disappeared somewhere, like outer space
You've found some better place
And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
Could you be dead?
You always were two steps ahead, of everyone
We'd walk behind while you would run
I look up at your house
And I can almost hear you shout down to me
Where I always used to be
And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
Back on the train, I ask why did I come again?
Can I confess, I've been hanging round your old address?
And the years have proved
To offer, nothing since you've moved
You're long gone, but I can't move on
And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you
I step off the train
I'm walking down your street again
And past your door, I guess you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
And now you've disappeared somewhere, like outer space
You've found some better place
And I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, yeah
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, and I miss you
Like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you, yeah

That line “could you be dead” gets me every time. Makes me wonder if those who were once close to me are still here.
This song’s memory brings a panicked sense of weight to my heart of a time now so long ago that slipped through my hands. Realizing as I listen this shadowy memory is dancing further out of focus.
One of the softest, silky smooth songs done in the 90's by a very beautiful woman.
@Geni Medina Yes I listen to "Smooth Operator" often. Not that I am one. Especially when I hammer stuff and smash my fingers 😀.
Sade, Tracey and Annie Lennox are that smooth, emotional contra alto tipe of singers. They don't have to sing high notes at all to convey their feelings and to ilustrate depth of their songs.
Yes, and great legs.
Sleek Stitch, that most certainly is just a rumour! She just isn't what is considered conventionally as "beautiful" whatever the hell that is!🤷♀️
I didn't say she wasn't beautiful, I was saying she ain't transgender, and rumours like that often start because someone isn't "conventionally" pretty. I remember when this came out, society had a lot to say about how she wasn't conventionally pretty, people had a LOT to say on the subject. It was stupid. That's why I said " whatever the hell that is!" Anyway, it's a great song, love coming back for a listen.
One of the most influential songs of 90's you never forget.
I saw them live once in Chicago . One of the best concerts i ever seen. They did like 15 minute version of this song as a finally . people were actaully crying, grown men and women

Tracy Thorne has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I simply don't understand how she never became a household name akin to Amy Winehouse. Amazing. I highly recommend their greatest hits collection. Many, many more gems to be found. Pax.
Amy Winehouse had a familiar 1960’s pop sound that helped her.
Unfortunately in our society talent doesn’t trump ugly. Tracey and Ben are not conventionally beautiful and thus couldn’t produce attractive videos or album covers. Just ask Christopher Cross.

For me, this song brings back living in southern Germany, in an Alfa Romeo heading down to the lakes on a sunny day with the windows down - so far from home. In those days, when you travelled, you really were far away from home and it was a real adventure. First time hearing Everything But The Girl was in that Alfa on that sunny day, 22 years old.
Do you ever get homesick for a place that doen’t exist anymore? 💔💔💔
In 1993-4 I met an old lady in Lithuania who had lived near where I grew up in the 60s-70s. She had been born and raised till about age 11-12 there, and had been taken “back” by her parents to Lithuania, a country she did not know. This was the late 1930s. As a teenager she went through the war, a brutal German occupation, then Russian occupation (the area had partisans against both lots of invaders.) That part of Lithuania was closed to foreigners (to all except Russians and neighboring Latvians, and eventually to East Germans) and had radio & TV jamming masts. For 50 years the only time she heard English again was when in hospital for an op and the surgeon noticed her Book of Common Prayer (edition from around 1900, written in old fashioned English even then.). This was how she had kept up her memory of English, by reading this little book every night and morning. She asked me what the English words were for radiatorus, telivisorų and so on. She was so powerfully homesick for the little corner of the shire she remembered - about a mile from where my dad grew up.
I didn’t have the heart to tell her that it was now unrecognisable; the coal slag heaps gone, along with all the country roads and isolated miners hamlets, the fields and hedges of brambles and rosehips. Now it’s a suburb, a motorway; the banks of the stream routed behind a maze of huge metal-box-warehousing and container-trucking, and filled with old shopping trolleys. Where she lived now, in a small country town in Lithuania, with fields and small allotments where ordinary people had their veg gardens - it was much more like where she grew up.
Everyone can identify with the words of this song,we all miss someone no longer here😢❤❤
yes.... or they're alive, have moved on - and their apartment is a place to go, to stand outside.. to hope that they might just come back..... but they're gone. This song could have been written by me.... word for word.... My so called friend, my idol, my mentor.... gone away = but their name is still there, faded on the apartment door buzzer. I go ever so often.... To perk up my wilted and aging soul. The thought of my friend -or what I thought was my friend.... brought me joy. They are gone... and I can't move on.
I have hit 'replay' waaay too many times tonight. I must be going through something in my sub-conscience.
u and me both since 2004
Me too dude, me too 😢
I remember the first time I heard this song, you played it for me Mark, on a Saturday in 1996 while we were packaging up computer disks to donate. It captured my soul instantly as did you. Thank you for the brief love that we shared, my most treasured memories. You’ve been in heaven for over 20 years but my soul still aches for your love. This song brings me back, I still miss you like the deserts miss the rain. RIP Georgie ❤️ I’ll love you always, until we meet again. ~N 🦋
I heard it for the first time in September 1995, coincidentially a Saturday as well

ive read the book of ben watt. unforgettable voice
Who’s watching this on 2021 ? Missing the freedom of the 90’s we took our perfect world for granted ... can’t wait to hit the dance floors again and dance the night away. Love you all ❤️
This song is timeless and still relevant in 2020 🙂🙏
I have been crying all day because of this song. Can’t get it out of my head.
Tracey Thorn has a voice of gold. She and Ben Watts were/are the quintessential couple. They love their craft and seemingly each other. I “Miss” them. Great song, yet they reflect what many want. True love and respect for each other. Wish they would recreate that video.
The original and best version.
Most definitely.
Nah
Yes, if it ain't broken, no need to fix it.
Both are great.
uncleambient todd terry remix the best version 👌🏻
Thoughtful lyrics, great musicianship and a beautifully understated delivery, simply wonderful.
I'd be honored if some EBTG fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of PRAYING FOR TIME and MOTHERS PRIDE on my YT channel in tribute to the great George Michael. George stated that Tracey Thorn was an important influence on him starting in the early 90s, and you can hear that influence on his masterpiece 1996 album Older and his later works. George and Tracey are 2 of the greatest vocalists ever, it's a shame they never collaborated on a song... thanks and peace.
Very, very well said!
After all these years, this song still hits my feels!
You can’t get much better than this 👋🏻👋🏻
this is so beautiful and haunting at the same time;it just buries itself into your and doesn,t let go;this is the that keeps you awake in the wee hours of the morning when you are all alone and you need someone;of all the lovers in your life;that are either dead; married or have moved on with their lives.
Darryl Warner yes.
this song is timeless, you can come back in 2050 and feel the same
Totally agree
Its the year 2020. Still no rain. Those who do the rain dance like Muslim LGBTQA appear to get beaten out of their costume and seems to go missing afterwards without warning. None of us around as far as the eye can see, even on TV. I feel well and truly missed. Its disgusting....
june 1996, miss that year. irene cara was living then. RIP IRENE CARA W/LUV, RESPECT. WILL REMEMBER YOU AND U WILL LIVE 4 EVER.
