During the War in Afghanistan there was a motion in my city to mandate yellow ribbon stickers on all city vehicles as a show of support to the troops. I wrote to my councillor to oppose the motion. Not because I was against showing support for the troops, but because if it was mandated, it would be meaningless. I knew that every yellow ribbon I saw on a privately owned car was put there by someone who deeply felt the conviction. Once you're told to make such a show by some corporate entity, it loses all genuine meaning.
Very true. That motion in your city was a very bad idea, respect that you took the time to write and object to it. Quite unecessary motion too right since there wasn't exactly a shortage of support for the troops during the first 10 years of the war, or that was my impression anyway as an Swede that spent 2005-2010 working in TX, AZ and California. Always got the feeling that there is always unwaivering support for the troops even among many of those that are against a specific war they get deployed to. Which i hope still is the case since that is the proper way to look at things IMO.
