By the mid-90's in Japan, PC gaming has already died off (if you don't count visual novels and j-RPGs), thus many of the great PC games never made it to Japan. However console gaming was really a thing, and some of the point & click adventures did find their way on the Playstation, among other genres. That's why this game exist only in japanese (for the PS), as in the west it didn't really made sense to make a point and click adventure for Playstation, if it already exist on the PC. Good thing is you don't need to know Japanese to understand 90% of the game as there is hardly any dialogues.
The story goes... well there isn't any. Collecting all the disks scattered through Neverhood you get to see the story. That's more or less the whole point of the game.
This game also has a sequel, Skullmonkeys.

I didn't know the Neverhood got an anime adaptation.

I noticed there's no extended burping or hall of records in this version. Some of the songs have been changed and shortened as well. The load times and audio quality also suck. However, the faster animations and more responsive gameplay make up for those shortcomings in my opinion.
1:45:49 Your game is over, Klaymen.
Next time, be more careful
Ohhhh this brings me back a lot of memories.
This brings back memories.
Love this.
Japanese audio.
Absolutely fucking disgraceful that they took out the klay wall of records. Too lazy to translate?
@@TheRojo387 translating the hall of records wouldve been a nightmare and probably would've increased production costs for this version
@@izzystar5904 Cheap bastards.
@@TheRojo387 ease down, asshole, memory capacity and money don't grow on trees.
@@TheRojo387 actually, the hall of records was in the game’s manual/book that comes with the game.
Good video man
Thats funny. I too just recently started this game again on PC. Stopped at the puzzle with the mouse and cheese. Nice!
one guy shared a method he beat this puzzle - a mouse is always facing the next mousehole you must enter.
1:31:20 Electrocution sound effect from Looney Tunes
I've boyon waiting for that
We love you
Omg I was just thinking about this game recently
Skullmonkeys predecessor?
sergio1898 yes, it was first released on pc as "the neverhood" in 1996. this ps1 port was only released in japan, where the game had become unexpectedly popular
David Fux , I prefer Skullmonkeys. This I prefer platforming over point and click.
Did you forget about Blue's Clues? That's a point-and-click adventure made for PS in America. Albeit with a more cartoony Steve.
Several times I thought youtube was buffering, but it was just the game stopping as the playstation loaded. I can be such an idiotic boob sometimes.
p l u m e PlayStation loads a lot than PC
To this day I still don't get some of the puzzles. Man this game was hard.
i know it is pretty randomly asking but do anyone know of a good site to stream new tv shows online ?
@Jaime Houston try FlixZone. Just search on google for it :)
@Jaime Houston try FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)

Good
The japanese version of the game is the only version that I could play beacause the pc version is kinda old and it can't work on my 64-bit win 7 machine
Here's a solution, just download scummVM and the game itself. After installing everything, click add game and locate the game's folder and go into the ASSETS folder. Select the directory and BINGO! The Game Is Added and Ready to play!
You can still play it on XP
I wonder if The Neverhood could work on the SEGA Saturn, or even the Nintendo N64?
Of course it could. They never bothered, simple as that. I suppose the easiest way would be trying to port its ScummVM reimplementation and attempting to make the game work through that way.
@@WeskerSega trying to run the Neverhood with ScummVM on a Dreamcast is a laggy mess. I wouldn't imagine that it would be any better on more archaic hardware
@@TheNoahGuy1 Yeah, of course it wouldn't run as it is. The game aimed Pentium PCs with 8 MB RAM (16 MB RAM recommended) back in the day, and these kind of reimplementations go higher than that. It would be a mattet of using the reimplementation as base (since there's no source code available) and stip down the game upon it to fit the console. Similar to the PlayStation version which runs at half resolution and also cuts animation frames. But he was asking about the possibilities of this game running on the Sega Saturn, and if it was made to run on the PlayStation, then it surely could be the same with the Sega Saturn even if with a lot of work.
the N64 could also run it, but the cartridge probably doesn't have enough storage space to carry the FMVs
神作啊
Is someone able to translate 1:58? The screen doesn’t appear on the OG release so I’m interested in what it says
"Hmph. You dare to challenge I, the great Klogg?
You must want to be like Hoborg, who was once King of the Neverhood.
I've already rebuilt this world, the Neverhood!
If you have the courage to take back this world, come to the throne room where I am!
-Klogg, Ruler"
I translated it as close to word-for-word as I could manage, so it sounds really awkward, but I promise that the original text flows much more smoothly.

Run bolto
Woah, never seen this game.
Was it ever translated?
C It was first released on PC as "The Neverhood" in 1996. This PS1 port was only released in Japan because the game had become unexpectedly popular over there.
It was originally made in English for PC
11:25 That music still haunts me.
13:54 This versions removes that long-ass corridor (at least 36 screens, if I recall correctly) you had to traverse just to get one tape. On its walls were a total of dozens and dozens of inscriptions that recounted the history of Neverhood's world, which looked a lot like a parody of some parts of the Old Testament. An absolutely terrible and clunky way to expose the lore; few ever bothered with it (at least one of the walkthroughs on Gamefaqs has a complete transcript), and whoever took care of this port did the right choice.
It's clear Douglas Ten Napel had lots of ideas for a Neverhood universe but didn't know how to present them; not amusingly, he did the exact same mistake with Armikrog almost two decades later.
It is still one of the most unique games ever made, but hardly one of the best.
btw fun fact: in Russian port of the game, they kept the wall, but replaced all the lore with low-tier jokes. I scavenged through ALL of this to find some lore or easter eggs but all I could find is obscene Russian humor of 90's. But that was pretty fun, to be honest.
Lately I read all the original wall and Iit generated lot of questions which remain unsolved up to this day. Like, where did Ottoborg go or what does that Door mean.
You totally missed the point. Doug and the developers knew what they were doing. I am willing to bet the hall of records was intentionally tedious and meant to test the player's patience. It was a way of trolling the player -- not unlike the infamous hole you can choose to jump down, causing the only game over. Alot of this game can be summarized as "cruel but hilarious." Some of the puzzles are downright sadistic and will drive most people crazy on their first playthrough. The whole game was pretty much an experimental art project that didn't follow video game conventions at the time and I love it for that.
I'm sorry but I disagree with this, the hall of records as tedious as it was to walk all the way in and back just fitted perfectly with the games absurdity and test of patience, I get it if it's not fun but it added such charm to the world and style of comedy(yes, I find it funny) that I think it's perfect and removing it it's like removing one of the best jokes in the game...
But I do agree with the decision of removing it for this version, the loading screen would have made it way more tedious
The sound quality is a bit low than pc version
Graphics quality is way worse than PC version aswell!
PC is always pushing the limits
@@Maxine07 then again the PC version ran in 640x480 where as the ps1 ran in 240p
Somehow the cutscenes reminds me of the Gba video version
i never see that crap before
can someone recommend me clay games like that
Skullmonkeys
Beside those mentioned, I recall only arcade game Trog, a couple little PC shmups called Platypus I and II, indie adventure The Dream Machine, Armikrog (a spiritual successor to Neverhood/Klaymen by the same designer, very disappointing IMO), and Claymates (a SNES platformer). Apparently also parts of The Swapper used it. There's also another adventure in development, Harold Halibut, that uses claymation.
thanks everyone
