The Murphy’s oil soap is really great, I use it for soaking my brayers in. One thing I tried with it that didn’t really work for me was I used a ziplock bag to hold the soap and my brayer while it soaked; the soaking process worked great but then I thought I’d just leave the soap in the ziplock bag till next time and the bag eventually sort of dissolved so I definitely don’t recommend that! Also, oxiclean has been working wonders on my brushes, plastic containers (the ones I use for acrylic pouring), and stencils. The thing I love about the oxiclean is that generally speaking there is minimal scrubbing. I just wanted to add that so that people have another option in case they can’t find the same products.
I very much appreciate your experience with cleaning brushes. I need to look into oxiclean as another option. Amazon here I come . . .
I use the Murphy oil on brushes that I have completely let paint dry on. Also works with mediums on a brush and some glues! It’s a miracle!
I agree, Murphy's IS a miracle! Always have a gallon on hand!

I did stencilling with 6y/o grandie today. It was a hot, sunny day so paint caked onto stencil.
Soaked them in water & boom ... squeaky clean lol ❤
Putting them in water right away is absolutely the best cleaning method. Wish I did that more often as it would be faster and bypass what I share in this video!
I'm pretty sure I remember an art instructor using baby shampoo for cleaning brayers. Or maybe mineral oil? Something without a strong aroma.
Yes, those products work too, but not as fast or easy as Murphy's!

I've used Goof Off for years, but not for cleaning stencils! It is THE go to product to get glue off that's left over from labels on jars and other products. It does leave an oily coat though, so you'll need to rinse that off with soap and water (Dawn works best in my opinion). P.S. The Goof Off also works a bit better if after you've scrubbed off a good bit, add a tiny bit of warm water and it will give the Goof Off a boost.
Fascinating how different products work well for different people. Dawn took forever for me, where if I allowed Goof Off to sit on the stencil for 5 minutes, and went back several rounds, the paint came off quickly.

Tremendous advice! Just read down through the comments to see if anyone else mentioned using the hand disinfectant that became so popular during the craziness of lockdown to clean the gel plate - It works well - a bit messy but just lather it on the plate, massage it around with fingers, use paper towels to mop it off and if you're extremely fussy a couple of baby wipes to finish off the job. Thank you so much for sharing. I learned a bit more about how to use the Murphy's Oil Soap than how I had been using it.
Great idea to use that for cleaning the gel plate. I use it to take dried paint off my collage too!
Thanks for another informative video Catherine 😊 The products mentioned in your video may not be available in Australia and if we can get them via the US the postage is prohibitive. I’d like to share a product which may be similar to Murphy’s Oil but is actually a brush cleaner readily available here and in NZ. I spritz my stencils with water and then squirt a small amount of Chroma Incredible Brush Cleaner on top, lather it up with a toothbrush and leave stencil overnight in, or covered by, a plastic bag. The next day I scrub gently with a non-scratch scourer and the paint comes off. I am not affiliated with the makers of this product … just excited to share the information with my fellow Australian and NZ mixed media artists. 🧼🎨

From an Aussie - I use a product by PlanetArk called Orange Power sticky spot and goo dissolver. It brings brushes up like new and is safe for septic tanks. A little goes a looong way! 😊🇦🇺🦘⭐️

Dawn dish soap works very well. You really don't need anything fancy or special. Warm water and soak it for a little while and voila!

70% or 90% alcohol in a spray bottle will clean stencils easily and brushes as well. Even removes latex acrylic from washed and dried clothing. I keep alcohol in my work area for paint clean up as well as texturing acrylic paint backgrounds. A spritz over paint especially when mixed with glazing medium makes amazing backgrounds.

@@catrains.artist I detest the smell of Murphy’s but use it in my cabinets. I’ll take the smell of alcohol but I like the
smell regardless. Soak the paint spot on clothing with alcohol, scrub with an old toothbrush and repeat as necessary. I’ve removed latex house paint from carpet with the same method. Works every time!

@@catrains.artist I've also heard that cheap vodka works as well as rubbing alcohol and acetone without the odor. (Which is why underage kids choose vodka, no telltale smell-or so I've heard....)
@@chrisraymond6618 vodka can be used as a cleaner but I’d be hard pressed to use it for cleaning!

I'm with you there. Although Murphy's gets most if not all of the stain out too.
Love your knowledge and information share, I continue to learn LOTS from you, so TYVM!! One comment for consideration, being the tree hugger that I am with a compromised immune system: knowing what checmicals are at play is useful. Be it my art supplies or anything I use to clean up in my life because I am especially sensitive to chemial smells!
I looked up Goof Off while watching the video & was suprised to see acetone as a primary ingredient - how did your nail polish not get ruined? So using it in a well venitlated area is a consideration as well. Thanks so much, Cat, looking forward to catching up on the rest of the videos!!! YAY!!
That's a very good question. Interestingly it didn't affect my nails, although I was wearing clothes during parts of the demo. Thanks for reading the bottle for me!
I have the same issue. Can't use art markers that have acetone in them, can't use Krylon. I seem to vaguely recall Murphy's Oil Soap as having a pretty strong scent. Since I live in an apartment, my ventilation is poor and I can't segregate stuff in a basement or garage until the scent dissipates.
Hey Cat. Great to know about Goof Off…just ordered. My stencils are coated and I’m raring to go but will have to wait for a week for my order. I’m curious about your Murphy’s oil soap…yours seems to be a GEL and is a neutral color. I’ve used it for years…it’s a liquid and kind of orange color. I clicked on the link you provided and it’s all orange and bottle looks same as what I have. Yours is different…both in color, label, and consistency. I don’t even see a container that looks like yours. Also, you say you soak your stencils in it? That’s a ton of product and a large container then?
The bottle I showed in the video is just a LARGE bottle of it, and mine is a gel and orange. I used to soak small stencils in Murphy's, but the bigger ones I just allowed the paint to cake on. Until I found Goof Off. Amazing stuff. I do soak my brushes in Murphys, and rarely empty out the jar that I reuse for MANY brushes.
Does the mineral oil/baby oil leave a film on the gelli plate that affects the paint when applied?
It hasn't for me.
I don't need any soap to clean my stencils! Just leave them in warm water for 1/2 hour and rub them off with a sponge and water...
That is really the best solution, however I rarely take the time to set up the soapy water before I start creating. Good for you for thinking ahead. Certainly makes cleanup faster.
