    Great question. The HDS does require its own power source. There are units that will power from the NMEA 2000 backbone but most MFD displays require their own power.

    Can you create a Garmin T-Connector backbone at the helm where the connectors will be exposed to weather? I.E., are they weatherproof or does the backbone need to be in a weather-protected space?

    Hi Scott. Great explanation of how to build a NMEA 2000 network. How would I use the Furuno BBWGPS NavNet GPS Receiver to provide data directly to my PC and MaxSea Time Zero?

    FYI, the power cable should always be connected as close to the center of the backbone as possible.

    Great video !!! I am going to install this NMEA 2000 system on my bass boat that has an HDS 8 Gen2 at the console and an HDS7 Gen 2 on the front deck. Is the Lowrance system as easy as this Garmin ? Also would you suggest the Point 1 antenna or the LGC 4000 ? Thanks, Bill

    Good info for folks just starting up. Works FLAWLESSLY with most any later model Garmin GPS map plotter head/mfd. Don't really understand why it couldn't be USB or cat 5 cable, but I get that it's cleaner and a single power cord

  • @Fischize
    @Fischize Před 10 lety

    Question: if I have a Lowarnce HDS-8 on the consol, can I use a Garmin on the front deck? If I understand the video, as long as I have a separate power source for the Garmin, the unit will work as long as I use the back-bone.

    I understand that there is a connection on the Yamaha 150 4 stoke that will link to this NMEA2000 system. I have the exact configuration, but would like to see the data on my Garmin 740s. Some research indicates I need a Garmin Yamaha engine interface cable. This cable should feed all the data I need. However there is some controversy as to whether or not fuel consumption is part of this data stream. Would I need to add the Garmin GFS 10 fuel sensor?

    You need a NMEA 2000 starter kit and a cable that will send the info from the motor to the network. Lowrance has one for yamaha for example. 120-37 is the number.

    Thank you. I sure wish the NMEA powered everything. I have a 21 foot Nitro with 4 batteries currently in the boat. Do you believe I need a fifth battery to support an HDS 10 gen + HDS 12 Touch + Sonic Hub? I fish maybe 10 hours at time (per trip) between recharging opportunities. thank you again

    Hi Geo Matrix, First we need to know if you have used the BBWGPS with a Navnet. If so you will not be able to use it with the PC. If not, then you will have to connect it through an RS232 port, assuming your PC still has one.

    Thanks for putting this video together. Does the HDS also need a power source, separate from the power to the NMEA? Or does the power that supports the backbone also supply power to all devices connected to the NMEA backbone?

    • @AlexanderKanaev
      @AlexanderKanaev Před 4 lety

      the "silver" (bare) cable is used to ground the nmea2K network. Connect it to the "minus", same place as the black cable

    • @ralphbell1786
      @ralphbell1786 Před 4 lety

      They make L-shaped connectors for tight turns, cable will bend to make gradual turns.

      If you are trying to save a few bucks, best if you just find another interest. Boat the proper way that is fun is expensive. Boating the cheap way always leads to tears and more aggravation than its worth. Trust me, I've tried it both ways.

    If I was looking to just read what my fuel tank was doing with just my Echo Map Plus 74cv, do I need all the parts listed in the video ? I found the Garmin GFS 10 but still not 100% on what would be needed. That's the only component I want to add to my chartplotter. Basically want to replace the analog fuel gauge.

    Is there enough power in the NMEA to run 2 Lowrance HDS units, Radar, transducer, Sonic Hub, Point1 antenna?

    • @TheGPSStore
      @TheGPSStore  Před 5 lety +1

      The power for the HDS units, Radar and SonicHub come from their own power cables, not the NMEA 2000 network. The transducer will get power from the HDS and the point one antenna will get power from the NMEA 2000 network.
