Such a totally cool song, awesome.
This is one of James Mercer's very best melodies, IMO. Completely fantastic and lyrical.
However, I have to wonder if the title of the song is a response to the title of the Cibo Matto song "Know Your Chicken"? The Shins knew and played shows with Cibo Matto in the early years.
The "onion" might refer to the multiple layers of life, and/or the multiple layers of a person's psyche (?).
Know your onion is a phrase ,don’t know if this helps. In French, there's the expression occupez-vous de vos oignons which means "mind your own business" in English but can be literally translated as "take care of your onions". Know your onions however means to be knowledgeable about a subject

The Shins never broke up! James was doing some work with Danger Mouse in Broken Bells but he can not forget what made him or where he came from. Can't wait for them to tour again. I don't think they have 1 bad song.

I've been hearing the first 5 seconds of this song on The Andy Milonakis Show. Never knew it was from an actual song until the other day when a friend used it on an instagram story she shared.

It's simple, that's what they're aiming for, it has no meaning, yet it could have a meaning, which merely adds another layer to the interesting word combinations they're using.
It's like they're having several different conversations at the same time, that are all loosely related to the same subject, and sometimes they're just completely nonsensical, you get it?

I think they named it after the saying "know your onions" which means to be knowledgeable about something, and the theme behind this song is that he's kinda trying to learn how to be and act a certain way so that he will be accepted. That's my take on it, anyways. :)
