Led by their fearless front-woman Derina Harvey, this five-piece Celtic-rock group offers a fresh take on traditional tunes and intersperse that offering with their own original jigs and reels. Their infectious rhythmic undertow is layered with rock guitar, dizzying fiddle motifs, and topped by Derina’s powerful voice. These transplanted east-coasters have earned a reputation with their high-energy live show, leaving many an audience out-of-breath and hollering from the dance floor!
The band has proven to be a crowd-pleaser wherever they go. Though the band is based in Alberta, 2015 has seen the group travel across the country, with three trips to Newfoundland to their credit where they have entertained crowds at theatres, festivals, and pubs. They have been featured twice on the main stage of George Street Festival in St. John's, once opening for NL favourites Shanneyganock. Most recently, they have shared the stage with other east-coast favourites such as Jimmy Rankin, The Irish Descendents, Pogey, and even some rock acts including The Trews, Kim Mitchell, and Trooper.
The band continues to build on a growing fan base by promoting their self-titled debut album (released in 2013). The record has garnered radio airplay in multiple regions in Canada (CKUA in Edmonton; K-Rock and Radio Newfoundland in St. John's, NL; CBC, Canada-wide). Their second album entitled "Rove and Go" (released May, 2016) has already gotten airplay on over 30 community and college radio stations across Canada.
This one hits hard and I don’t know why. Never known a sailor, and all I know of boating couldn’t fill half a page; but this song cuts deep, and I’m here for it.
I think it's because it's about abandonment and writing people off as much as the vessel. If you listen to some of Stan's other songs, especially: Last Watch on the Midland, his old soul for the losses people feel when they're deemed unnecessary or obsolete.

Dear John Mckillop: The 'Ladies' have been singing Ballads about Men & by Men for as long as I can remember, granted that only extends back six decades, my first five years or so are a bit hazy, what I find disconcerting, is Men trying to sing a female point of view song. I will have to admit that I found a couple worked quite well, but women singing a mans point of view has been done so often that I hardly notice, especially when the voice & talent of the artist is this good!!!

Derina's voice and the musical arraignment makes this the definitive version of this great song. Awesome!

I used to think that Schooner Fare did the best version (sorry Stan) but holy smokes! This is great, I love how she goes flat where the other versions go sharp or drops to the seventh instead of staying on the fourth/fifth.

There is nothing in the lyrics that indicate the gender of the storyteller and this is an absolutely beautiful rendition in which the vocalist (and band) captures the affection, hope, irritation and determination quite successfully
"She gave twenty years of service boys, and met her sorry end... then they laughed at us and said we had to go."
In spite of the fact that the song refers to people performing overwhelmingly male occupations and activities, the lyrics refers to those who repair the ship as "boys".
I don't care if a woman sings it, but the lyrics and context overwhelmingly indicate a male protagonist.

I think you're letting your sensibilities get in the way of your exegesis.

Obviously the protagonist is male (due to the historical context) but the lyrics are entirely neutral to that fact.

Yes, it's a brilliant song by Stan Rogers, and many excellent versions have been recorded and performed, but I think this is the best one.
