- These new Craftsman socket sets are pretty well constructed and offer a good range of sockets, wrenches, extensions, and ratchets. What sold me on this particular set was the higher quality case when comparing it to comparable sockets sets available today.
My wife got me this set
for my Birthday this year. She said what sold her was the sturdy case with Metal latches and not cheap plastic ones. That’s a SMART woman and why I love her.

I like this set.
I personally do not like the blow moulded cases. If you want to replace a broken or lost tool it has to be the exact dimension and shape or it will not fit. If you want to add a tool you use regularly that is not part of the original kit there is no place for it. If there are tools you do not use you feel obligated to carry them or you think you lost them. I buy a small tool box or use a bucket and make holders for what I need by drilling holes or notches out of scrap lumber to help keep track of them. The tool kit can then be sized to your needs. The trick is to not overload the the tool box! I have several labelled buckets such as drywall, electrical, plumbing. painting, etc, They stack nicely in the shop, easy to identify, and rotate in and out of the truck tool box easily as needed. Plus you always have a chair. Your needs may differ because we all work differently.
I completely understand where you are coming from. I think you are correct on how people work differently. When we are using this type of socket set, generally we are not carrying the entire set with us. When assembling machinery, we are normally using impact sockets and only use these smaller sets near the end of the jobs. Usually we are setting sensors and switches with these socket sets. Our work is also pretty concentrated at that point, so we are not carrying this set all over the place. It is generally laid open on a table next to our main tool boxes throughout the day, and then stored at the end of the work day. I like the cases because we can quickly assess whether we are missing something within the set. I do understand your point of view though.
I’ve become a big fan of Gearwrench and Sunex myself. I haven’t given any new Craftsman tools a chance, appreciate the review. It was a big turn off to me that they sent production overseas, even though my favorite tool brands are German and Taiwanese.
Absolutely nothing wrong with German tools. Germany produces some of the highest quality tools in the world, so does Japan for that matter. I like GearWrench as well.
Have you tried Tekton? I've been really impressed with their sockets, and their new US made 30/60 angled wrenches are incredible for working on gas cylinder banks.
The new Craftsmen looks pretty good, i almost wonder if they're made in the same Taiwanese factory.
I have tried some Tekton, really good tools as well. The impact sockets that I really like are Sunex. Over the years we have acquired so many different brands of impact sockets, I have all mismatched sets on the trailers. There are several good brands out there. Tekton are a little tougher to come by in my area, but my local Napa carries Sunex, so it was just more convenient to pick them up. I will look a little closer at Tekton though.
Bought this set from Lowe's about 7 mounts ago and the sockets will start to round bolts off after a few times you start using them and also the sockets will start chipping inside them they will eventually brake dont wast your money on this they will not last
Did you try to warranty them?
