  • In this first episode of "Big Flippers", I purchase a semi-working 1995 AMEK Big 28 digitally-controlled analog console. We also get a tour of the seller's studio, BRM Sound. Ben McLeod is the studio owner and also the guitarist for the band, All Them Witches... www.allthemwitches.org/
I owned a Big 28 a few years back and managed to destroy it while trying to retrofit it with features it never had before. I learned a ton through my mistakes. I then bought a Big 44, an even bigger desk and it unfortunately died because of my stupidity. I should have never tried swapping CPU cards with my dead 28 thinking I repaired it. Different revision to begin with, but it killed the 44, the automation computer, and the power supply in one single strike. It took me months to sort it all out. Now the 44 is back better than ever and I'm a lot smarter as a result. But with 2 desks and only one working, I was left with a metric crap ton of spare parts. I thought the best thing to do would be to find another Big 28 in need of repair that I could buy cheap and fix up with my spare parts. I happened to find the perfect candidate on Reverb.com. I flew over 1000 miles to Florida on a mini "vacation" with my wife. We rented an SUV to pick up the Big 28 and drive it back to NY.

The Ameks from that era had some snags for sure. But they can be transformed into a fantastic workhorse. Getting the VCA's / computer bypassed once and for all is a big one. Upgrading the mic and line amps can be done for relatively cheap. I find the EQ's as is to be pretty solid. I've read some threads about going with a beefier, more efficient power supply to bring the noise floor down as well - but it's been a long time since I was working at a studio where we had one of these in our B room.

Still shorts my brain out every time I hear someone say "Vintage from the 1990's". "Vintage" means "made in 1976 or earlier." GOT IT?

Better tell the “vintage” computer fanatics. I understand your point, though. I used the term loosely to point out an old thing. Thank you for watching.

@@LightningBoyAudioIt's just that I get to feeling old. It's different with computers they didn't really hit their stride till the nineties. I really wish I'd held on to the various Apple II Plus computers we had kicking around when I was a kid.
