This was absolutely brilliant. I love Klavan’s (with a K) ability to clarify astoundingly complex concepts. He answers profoundly and compassionately the questions I find rambling around chaotically in my own mind. I have questions, frustration and passion and I work myself up into a ball of confusion and anxiety - and then I listen to Klavan and the puzzle pieces seem to come together and I feel calmer and even resolute, as though I serve a purpose and I am capable of doing the work to achieve it. It is so refreshing to hear harsh truths spoken with humor and encouragement.

I wish it was so easy. That's only a small part of the truth. Much bigger part is, Nature really hates empty spaces. The void left by the departure of Christianity HAS TO BE filled with something, anything. People simply can't live without something that orients them in the world just like a computer can't be started without the operating system.
And when I say Christianity, I don't mean New Age or Critical Race Theory masquerading as "Christianity".
I was a dissident in Soviet Union, but also a member of a small Christian congregation, about 300 people. We were all dissidents today we would be called political activists, anti-Communists, we were homeless, we didn't have a place to gather and worship, and constantly under threat of persecution.
I can tell you I have never ever felt closer to God than back then. I didn't know it back then but that period of my life I was truly living the early Christianity. I have met God face to face only once in my life (which is more than vast majority of people can say), and this also happened at that time, in 1989. Terrifying experience, but also truly magnificent. I have no idea if this happened because we lived like early Christians or because God simply needed a job done for His master plan.

I'll be 30 in a few months. I'm less excited about watching the super bowl now than I was as a kid cause living more years has meant that I've seen more super bowls. The same experience applies to watching a great movie, or reading a great book, or getting through an election cycle which is supposedly "Particularly important" The more you've lived the harder it is to feel blown away by the newest iteration of something. I can only imagine what it'll be like once I get to Klavan's age. I could be wrong cause I don't know him personally, but I really get the sense that when he talks current events, and the latest news his heart isn't in it as much as when he's talking about the bigger picture. Stuff that's more broad and timeless.

I turned 40 a few months ago, and reading more books has not watered down the experience at all. Each book gives me more than the last, and gets me looking forward even more to the next one. What really did it for me is reading less fiction and more nonfiction. I now read history books almost exclusively. You just need to find the activity that excites you for reasons other than enjoyment in the moment. What enriches your life? That's the sort of activity that never gets watered down no matter how much of it you do.

    • @zackwalker1721
      @zackwalker1721 Před 6 měsíci

@@reliantncc1864Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that while I don't necessarily find movies or books less enjoyable as I age, it's harder for them to impressive me, if that distinction makes any sense. Finding something pleasurable, and being impressed by it are not necessarily one and the same, but one can impact the other in my opinion. The admiration of greatness is part of the enjoyment.

    • @reliantncc1864

@@zackwalker1721 I guess I don't share that view. Each new book draws me in for its own reasons, not dependent on other books I've read before. The best history book I've ever read was The Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich, in terms of writing skill, sourcing, and logical conclusions, not to mention the impact of the subject matter. Currently I'm reading books that are inferior in objective and subjective terms, but I still find them very impressive and I feel no less drawn to them. If you're curious, the books in question are a three-volume history/biography of Joseph Stalin and a history of the Stasi.
I stick to my belief that something that enriches you will never get old or watered down. You just have to find the right thing for you.
I'm not trying to argue with you. I understand what you mean. I do want to point out that my love for history only hit its stride in the last few years. I already had an interest in history, but it's really gone into overdrive fairly recently. I hope you find something that hits you the same way.

@@adamsmith-wi3qg Hm, that might be going a little too far for me. Many successful societies have existed without a Judeo-Christian foundations. The problem is that our Western societies were built on such a foundation and cannot survive its removal. If a society is built on a different foundation, it doesn't require Judeo-Christian values, but does require the foundation it was built on, whatever that may be. The most obvious example (which I bring up because it's simple to argue) is the Roman Republic/Empire. It was built on a foundation of putting one's country ahead of oneself and attaining glory through service to the country. The Roman Empire fell because it lost its foundation even though that foundation was not Judeo-Christian.

I can accept arguments that Great Britain and America were even more successful, perhaps. They certainly had more competition than the Romans. Great Britain had to contend with France for centuries, while America had the Soviet Union for most of our period of dominance (as you said, thus far). Rome had no serious competition for over half its existence as a superpower. I don't think any other country has that kind of track record for so long. Maybe ancient Egypt.

He's going to make less of a dent if he's less dedicated to creating content. That's to be expected, but it's also fortunate that he's got DW backing him because then that dent might be even smaller. Excellent topic for the youth today. So many deny the promised blessing of GOD to our Premier Mother Eve: "thy desire shall be to thy husband." But in every woman's heart of hearts, this is inherent in the soul...even to to marrow. For any man to not earn that desire, or any woman who turns her back on that desire and the maternal instinct to have children to pass on her life to another generation, their judgment has run amuck and robs from life a great source of peace, especially when one is on their deathbed with a loving spouse and children at their side. This is what GOD ordained to soften the blow of one's departure until "the resurrection of the just."

I'm a Christian, but in most cases when anyone brings up God as one of their points, even I see it is not a debate tool (also, because when it isn't linked to a specific solution or linked to its usefulness in different areas of family, country, individual (and yes, not all elements are useful/helpful and can be corruptible)). I do have to say, that when he said "Jesus is the light that shines on our shame, and they are looking to put that light out", It really doesn't even need to be about religion. Shame is a symptom to a root cause, it is a reaction. It doesn't mean to stop what you are doing if you feel shame, it means you should take pause, self-analyze, and tread slowly and lightly if you are moving forward through it. Removing shame is like removing the pain receptors in your body, you might not hurt yourself, but damn the risk is high.
Instant gratification, the easy button, and taking advantage of others become a lot more tempting when you're the only one in front of yourself to stop you. . And guess what, most of us don't know what we need and we don't know what the best decision is for ourselves. We should all use each other as check-ins and devil's advocates rather than echo chambers.

The problem with re-embracing fat-shaming or slut-shaming is that the track record is troubling, if not abysmal. Reference the Bible and Jesus asking the stone-throwers SO offended by an adulterer. Christ called out the mob by simply saying, "He who is sin-less throw the first stone." They all left. Andrew probably knows this, or should. Simple to focus on fat or sexual behavior ( even if different, but moral ). Much, much more difficult to walk humbly and not as a hypocrite. In fact, committing that error makes us stone-throwers all over again. We humans in our original sin are terrible at justice, rather, mob justice.

There’s a big difference between saying don’t be a hypocrite, and then saying because I don’t want to be a hypocrite, I will never call out anything or say that any kind of behavior is wrong. Even if we fail to uphold the standard, that doesn’t mean we discard the standard.
After the men had left Jesus turned to the woman and asked “does no one condemn you?… Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.”

I think we have it all wrong. Dostoyevsky, Nietzsche, Shakespeare (Hamlet), Etc. They thought that the nature of man was what was manifested in their words/actions.
But I think that culture is what makes a human act in a certain way. That's why people from different cultures have different worldviews, morals and way of life. So by Shakespeare being famous and his work being injected into the culture, he inevitable made this prophecy a reality because his art's philosophical concepts made it into the culture. Just like Marx's work is still in the back of the minds of every intellectual working on social justice, "progress", etc. It's ultimately inevitable. This is also what makes "God" kinda real in a Jordan Peterson-esque way, because that belief held by many inevitably shape the society in which we live in.
So God is real in the sense that the generational belief in god and it's baggage are a part of the dominant culture. Culture shaping society.
Looking at the culture being produced today, I don't even question why every major city is overwhelmed by homelessness, addiction and violence. This is the type of people the current culture created. Religion did one thing right: Gave people a purpose greater than themselves to thrive for alongside every other human living near them.
Creating Unity around the religious narrative allowed for the maximization of productivity/innovation/technological advancement/etc. which was only enabled through trust in society based on that collective belief.
Human nature is not what we think it is, it's much simpler. It's just a desire for reproduction and survival as that instinct is the only reason that our species survived for so long and were able to improve our quality of life. By cooperating to increase security, productivity and knowledge/tech. Passing it down generationally and improving on what is known to further increase quality of life, Defend against invaders/predators/nature and guiding them to the best way of life to achieve their natural instinct of reproduction and survival.
Along the way we became intellectualized, conceptualizing ideal ways society ought to be. This is where we all went wrong. Because we replaced our basic instincts with unnatural social conflicts with other people who don't agree with our ideal way society ought to be. This has been the cause of most wars and atrocities in the known history of all human civilizations.
This indicates to me what human nature really is, psychologically and functionally. Our survival instinct is directly linked to cooperation. That means a certain degree of conformity. That conformity is what makes people want to be like those around them (adaptive survival mechanism). Our ability to adapt, not only to the physical environment, but also the socially environment is what allowed for our species to survive and become masters of the planet. Being able to exploit resources optimally, increasing productivity, innovate technologically and constantly improve our quality of life.
However, over time as we became too rich and too safe. Our basic instincts went ignored. But that instinct is not just gone and it's a part of the human experience, you can't just get rid of it. This is why I think people always need an "enemy". To satisfy that instinct psychologically. (More war causes). That's why we are now all becoming mentally ill. Those at the edges of society, physically, psychologically, etc. are all struggling to find "purpose" in their lives. Religion used to hold that place and would guide these damned souls to salvation. But without God (I'm an atheist and so is most of the west) these people end up becoming addicts, homeless, incarcerated, etc. Because their human instincts need them to have that enemy, that purpose in life. Something they would die for. Something greater than themselves. With the death of God (Secularization), this was inevitable.
The society we constructed with the dominant culture being religious in the past, is no longer adhering to the religious practices/way of life of the past. Therefore, whatever human nature is, with the current state of affairs, is a real struggle for those at the bottom of the social hierarchies. Which also explains the woke movement being filled with virtue signaling ideologues. They are just using their survival instincts to improve their standing in the established social hierarchy. Much like we used tech and knowledge to improve it, once we live in an overabundant society, the only other natural enemy is not physical it is societal.
With nothing to fear of other human tribes, the environment, etc. The only struggle is withing the newly conceptualized reality of these people: Society. So Everyone is trying to climb that social ladder. In the past, you would do that through wealth, through power/influence. But today, with a society that requires neither wealth or power to survive, the next currency is your position in society (Also where caste systems/nobility come from). Being an outcast = death. So that survival mechanism makes people conform to the society to the extent that they feel safe within it. This also explains cancel culture as the natural human instinct to divergence from the group is to remove that person from the society (jail, death or exile). Unity allows for survival. That's why people who are different are naturally seen as enemies (This also explains racism).
What we should do is sorta like Klavan says. Create need a "new religion" which encompasses the best way to live for society to thrive. This should encompass obvious human necessities in the modern world such as the facilitation of reproduction (Hungarian system is a great incentive) and education of future generations, security (laws, enforcement, justice), freedom (speech, thought and association) and Responsibility (Pursuit of truth, respect, integrity, stewardship, courage and leadership). Also including other relevant and important philosophies.
    Thoughts?

Human behaviour is a result of the interaction of human nature and human culture. But there is something it is like to be a human being that exists prior to the influence of culture: our biology, including our instincts and potential for feelings. Because we are innately rational self-awarenesses, too, this also means we recognise basic rational truths, such as that unnecessary pain and suffering is bad. This together plausibly leads to the formulation of morals. But how can good conquer evil? If Jesus is God we don't need a new religion, we need active Christianity; and if Jesus is not God there is ultimately no hope for humanity, only temporary bandages for ever-emerging problems, until humanity becomes extinct. It's a good job the evidence for the resurrection is so good, then (the witnesses to it would never lie about it under persecution). Believe in Jesus. You'll be glad you did.
That's some of my thoughts. More are available.

I saw a video of him go up to a man and his girlfriend and whisper to her and she left with him and his body guards stood between the young man and Tate. I am sure she was not worth the man's time but he did something no man should do to another man. He uses women and the problem is that they do not have enough respect for themselves to tell him no.

Klavan was right until he talked about the reformation. As Doug Wilson says, “a straight line can be traced from Free Grace, to free man, to free markets”. The reformation gave us America, and Western Europe. Wherever the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox remained, there remained poverty. Where reformed theology spread, prosperity spread. From there, I think his speech went downhill and he is wrong. Including Klavan acknowledging original sin in the beginning of his speech while embracing the “myth of neutrality”. And thinking that there is no theocracy. It’s not whether but which. We live in a theocracy now. It’s an atheistic theocracy with its own blasphemy laws. Protestant Christian Nationalism doesn’t advocate a state church. It’s advocates separation of state and church but not of Christ and state.

There is no such thing as a "tyranny of bad ideas". Every idea is open to scrutiny. I would be wary of anyone talking about statements or declarations as being tyrannical or threatening the future. Feel free to disagree, but enough of forums full of speakers warning about doom and gloom if you don't think as the sponsors do. Someone who refers to themselves as an "artist" should know as much. Also, consider what resources will be needed around 2050, when global population is at 10 billion or more.
