Akai MPC 2.2 Update - Map MIDI Controllers In Standalone Mode (No Software)

  • One of the new features of the MPC 2.2 update is MIDI mapping, for both the software and the standalone hardware. I mainly use the MPC standalone so I wanted to show how the mapping works with the standalone units. This is a useful way to control your projects and parameters on the hardware devices with extra controllers for knobs, faders, etc.

    Pretty awesome. I think you’re the one person that might have answer to this question so I hope you see this. I’m trying to do either one of these two things. 1- have the MPC in standalone mode but sync my DAW, which in this case is Cubase, to the MPC. Having a tough time doing that.
    Number 2- I would like to use my MPC X in standalone mode but control soft synths via the sequencer and midi. Again I don’t want to put it in controler mode if I don’t have to.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 6 lety

      In either case, MIDI would be the way to go. You can use various sync options (midi clock, ableton link, etc). For triggering vst, just a midi cable out of your MPC into your computer/interface and just choose MIDI out on the MPC track, set your track channel, and set your vst to respond to the channel you set in the MPC.

    • @V4D2
      @V4D2 Před 6 lety

      I'm not sure if i got this right...
      Are you saying that one can trigger VSTs from the software sequencer via MIDI, in standalone mode ??
      Or
      you wanna invert the way one usually uses the setup -> You wanna access the MPCs library when using Cubase on the PC , whilst the MPC is in standalone mode.. is that it ?
      I have been postponing getting a MPC Live due to 2 'details' :
      - not being able to access software VSTs in standalone mode (not possible with this hardware) ;
      - not being able to read audio files from the SSD/HDD expansion slot. (disk streaming) (this is fixable via firmware update. AKAI engineers have been putting this off ever since the Live came out.)
      What happens is - > when you wanna load saved files on the SSD, the files are loaded into RAM instead, and there's not enough memory to store and read from bigger songs and riffs,...stuff like several minutes long.
      Any imput you guys might have on this matter ?
      (thanks) ;)
      PS: Pretty useful video man ! thank you

    • @V4D2
      @V4D2 Před 6 lety

      SoundsAndGear hmm hm ..yeah .
      So.. as I see it..one could basically be connected to an actual rack soundmodule and use those samples, whilst in standalone mode, right?
      But would you have to load in the sounds from the module when sequencing the track..., or would one just synch in real time?
      I'm probably gonna order one and give it a go throughout the trial period.
      If I can load enough .wav tracks into it I might keep it.
      Have you ever had the "memory full" warning message?
      Is it a heavy limiting factor?
      Thanks for the feedback ;)

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 6 lety

      I haven't ran into that limit yet, I generally record audio tracks from my hardware and only load up the drums or other samples I need instead of loading up a lot of content.

    Great video and info! Got me going and now I'm stuck haha . How do I save to where when I open a project the faders go back to their position ? Other wise you would have to have a mini mix sessions everytime to get the levels back to where they were. Suppose I'm working on a project where all the faders are full blast max . When I open a different project I won't be able to move the maxed out fader with out effecting that where the volume was set on the mpc , does that make sense ? I need the faders to automatically go back the their saved positions when I load a project otherwise what's the point of mixing anything ?

      I believe they have global mappings that will stay but project mappings will need to be setup for each project if I remember correctly. This is not something I use personally so I could be wrong.

      Never had that issue, not sure what the problem would be. I've used a few different keyboards with the MPC and they all lined up properly note wise. Is it a class compliant keyboard or does it require a driver?

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 6 lety +2

      Yeah, it is per project on the hardware currently from what I can tell. In the software they have "global" maps. But you can actually create and save a template so your mapping will load with your new projects based on your project template.

      SoundsAndGear but even in software there is no option to set mixer faders in global so they need to be set for a project. What a terrible UI design decision, hope they will fix it!

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 6 lety

      Word, yeah I don't mess with the software and honestly would probably never use this mapping feature lol. But I suppose if you save a default project template your mapping will always be there.

    seems like Akai has abandoned all their MPC TOUCH users as it screen is not supported by the new Mac OSX versions (10.13.3 and above), and seems like they are not very interested about it. I leave this comment since their support form on their site doesn't works too. VERY DISAPPOINTING. I would seriously recommend to think twice (at least) before buying any of their new hardware..

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 6 lety

      They used a third party driver/tech for that screen from what I've heard. They are stuck waiting for an update as well. Glad they did their own thing in the new ones, I wasn't a fan of the touch. The screen driver was always buggy for me. Hopefully it gets fixed though.
