THE HISTORY OF BLACK HAIR

- Many Black people don't know the history of Black hair and natural hairstyles and the significance it held in Africa. I learned some new things as I researched and it made me feel proud to discover more about our history. Efforts are made to erase our culture and connection to Africa so we must do our part to educate ourselves and each other to keep it alive. This is probably the longest I've ever worked on a video and the hardest lol It was really important to me that I posted this and got it right so I hope you guys enjoy it!:) The pics are representations and some don't match up perfectly with the dates or time period but most are really close. Make sure you continue to research this topic...there was a lot of information I couldn't include or the video would have been way too long.

I plan to go into more detail about locs and other subtopics. There was some conflicting information about Europeans calling the enslaved African's hair dreadful upon their arrival to America- which is where some say the term locs comes from and why individuals choose to refer to them simply as locs. I will continue to do more research on this topic and create a video about my findings.

And people in our community say "it's just hair", but not to our ancestors, it was their identity. It was adorned and treasured.
I think Evan now adays our hair is still vary import end to black people especially black women with the natural movement going on. People at my school tell me a bomb exploded on my head and I tell them I just don't fit there mold of beautiful. People need to see the beauty in curls. And everyday more and more people do :)

Wow a lot of changes. From press N curls, to afros, to braids, to relaxers, to weaves and now natural! We really have changed since long ago. I'm happy that we are embracing our, curls, coils, waves, and kinks!!!!
+ImaRobin M I'm great full that the afro became a symbol for the black power and panther movements. As it still evokes awe, confidence, rebellion, similar to locs these may not be practical everyday styles for some but they display black afro hair in its most organic form.

THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST NATURAL HAIR VIDEO TO DATE.! I understand our desire to learn how to properly care for our hair and to look good BUT the natural hair movement has become so MUNDANE and very...well, shallow. I have almost totally stopped viewing natural hair vids BUT THIS gives me hope that "the natural hair movement" can serve what should be its RIGHTEOUS purpose to GET BACK TO NATURE/OUR ROOTS. We have been colonized & have forgotten WHO WE ARE
Yeah me too. I actually said deuces to the community a couple years ago ( still natural though). I recently resurfaced, and I noticed a very artificial sense of natural and the very things that made the movement organic and fun and loving and easy going....lost. Am back, and I will do what I need to do to pass down these intangibles and the truth that our hair is beautiful and all it needs basic tlc for it to thrive the way it did when we were HOMES.

May I ask why some of your decided not to be affiliated with the natural community so I can get a heads up?
***** Several reasons. I am Nigerian, natural, and VERY VERY knowledgeable about black history I will list the reasons.
1. Some natural hair women can be conceited and judgmental without wanting to teach another black woman about their natural hair
2.I wear wigs sometimes to change up my style and protect my real hair, which is below my breast when straightened. Some natural hair women will come out me like they are crazy not knowing that I have natural hair.
3. Some go natural just to grow long hair and then relax it. While they are natural they put down relaxed hair until they relax their hair later.
4. Some naturals hide their natural hair under weaves and then talk shit about natural hair women who may be wearing a wig or weave as a protective style. I have seen this,
5. Sadly there are natural hair women who are natural but subconsciously hate their natural hair and only like the loosely coiled natural hair.
It can be frustrating. Then all some talk about is natural hair. I had a teacher who originally had a perm but the moment she cut her hair and went natural she started clowning the black girls at my school with relaxed hair. Ugh!

Girlwonder Oh my goodness. I agree, one thing I can't stand about the natural community is the slander against 4c hair, and just the texture typing. Everybody expects loose curls, and supports those textures but not 4c. It's annoying but I try to ignore them. The others, I didn't actaully think some people are like that.
Now this needs to be in our history books in school. Like ASAP!
As an African it was lovely to see you connect it all back to African roots. American black history might not be directly mine but I completely understand, connect and share the same goals for the future of Afro-textured hair. Similarly a large portion of African women I have come across have the same "straight is better" mentality my relatives alike. However I think a new generation is surging that is changing this outlook, there is so many difference in texture, cultural traditions and ceremonies that tie back to hair.

It leaves me with mixed emotions. I am so proud of our heritage and without knowing we still wear elaborate hairstyles and it's because it's always been apart of our culture. Then I get so pained and angry to think we've been psychologically damaged by people who forced their superiority complex on us due to hatred, jealousy and control.
I so appreciate that you took the time to put this together. Our youth need to know their history and some of us who should know that don't know can now know. I can go on and on but you all get the point. I love my blackness. I just wish everybody appreciated too. Thank you, Sis.

This is why when people say that slavery doesn't affect black people today you should call them a damn lie. Without the knowledge of our history, we're basically bootleg Europeans.

This made me feel so much pride in my culture. This is why cultural appropriation bugs me so much...members of the black diaspora in this country have literally been tortured, abused, and even legally barred from wearing their hair certain ways, then eventually it became culturally barred, and now we're experiencing a much welcome surge in people wearing their the hair the way THEY want to whether that's in weaves or natural or whatever they want to do, and I love that. I just hate that once some white model decides to do it on a runway or something, suddenly these styles are "in" "edgy" or "cool" when we've literally been fighting anti-blackness for the right to wear these styles AND be respected at the same time for literally centuries. I wouldn't mind other people wearing these things as much if it didn't always come with them literally getting credit for our cultural accomplishments. Sighs.

Love this vid.... When I read the book "Hair Story" a couple years ago (around the time I started growing out my relaxer) I was so amazed. I figured something like all of this was the case, but when I got to see the actual images (like the ones you are showing too!) It blew my mind. Suddenly I realized that everything that went into grooming my hair was a labor of love handed down to my by some woman who generations ago sat with her people and did the same thing. Now when I'm washing my hair with Rhassoul clay, I think of the Africans who used clays and muds in their hair. When I braid or twist, I think of the different ways different cultures of my ancestors did their hair. It actually made me feel a little emotional to think of all we lost and of all we are finding. Thanks for posting... the more positive beautiful images of our hair and history, the better!

Very good quote but sadly many black women will not hear that, they still think that kinky hair is not attractive and will still let the European characteristic rule them by wearing these ridiculous wigs and weave and also relaxers all damaging to the hair and scalp and causing baldness. I see a more black woman wearing weave and wigs then not and and if they are not wearing those hair pieces then they have their heads wrapped up like the Louisiana laws in 1789 but it does not look nice, they all look more like mammy from the movie Gone with the Wind and I very rarely see a black women who's hair is not chemically straightened. Black women NEED to do away with the weave (including weaved in braids) and wigs and relaxers and stop patronizing and making these Koreans rich like how I also saw in this video. Brazilian and Yaki hair is NOT black hair CARE. I do not see the racial pride in hair taken with black women like how this video says it is, it is very few and far between.

But they CAN be used as a protective style, and you shouldn't be so ignorant as to bash someone for what they choose to put on their head. Its none of your business. I know that you are pretty young but you need to get educated and no go along with what a lot of ignorant people say. How is weave easier to deal with when number one its expensive, and you have to be careful when it is in and Heaven forbid you get in a fight and it gets pulled out along with your natural hair and you cant get your head fully washed with it in? Hell I see that weave wearers cant even scratch their head with it in they have to pat it smh. Weave does not grow your hair out, good nutrition and not putting wear and tear on it like weave and chemicals grows it out. And and am not bashing anyone, if you want to risk going bald that is perfectly your right to do and I will not try to stop you ok lo! ***** As a natural I can personally say my hair has grown WAY more with weaves and extensions properly installed than it has having my hair out. Low maintenance styles are GREAT for our hair textures. It's not up to you to decide whats right for everyone. Yes I think we should embrace our hair, but choosing styles that makes our hair easier to maintain is NOT hating ourselves or wrong and not everyone who wears weaves will go bald lol. Thats such an ignorant assumption to make. You can properly care for your hair in a variety of styles INCLUDING weaves. We shouldn't even have to debate this. We are beautiful no matter what we personally choose to do with our hair. How about instead of bashing a black woman for what she chooses to do with her hair try uplifting them. Not everyone who wears weaves are ashamed of their hair or want to look European. I wear weaves and I LOVE my natural kinky hair but when I wear it out every single day even if I properly care for it it tends to be less healthy than when I wear my braids, twists, sew ins etc. We have so much variety and what works for some does not work for others so you can not base every black womans choices on your own experience and say because it may not work for you it must be that way for us all. Some styles that damages some can be just fine for others. Just let us be free to do what we want with our hair... we've had people telling us for centuries. Let us be free to do WHATEVER we want with whats ours.

Uh weave is not low maintenance, it costs a lot I see and it takes a while to tie it into ones head and like I said one cant not wash their hair thoroughly or even scratch their head, that is not what one with common sense would call low maintenance. Wow! This is most diffidently an eye opener, I love being natural and I wouldn't change it for NOTHING in the world. I've been natural going on 3yrs now and I think being natural is so much easier than relaxing your hair every chance you get.

I loved this video so much. My mom went by herself without checking with my dad and relaxed my hair when I was in the first grade. My dad was furious. I didn't know what she was doing, as she was always in my hair playing in it. My stepmom and sister are natural and I have been begging my step mom for so long to let me go natural. The versatility of kinky, curly, and coily hair has always intrigued me. She let me transition and I have been transitioning for about 7-8 months now and this video made me even more excited to embrace my natural hair. Thank you.
This is great, I love this video!! Many don't know that the only reason black hair became considered "ugly and unruly" is because white people were jealous of it. But now we've embraced it and rather than deeming it ugly, some are even trying to copy it! Thanks for helping empower and spread awareness about an important black identity topic!

There is so much information that is unknown to most of us and it sheds light on why our Black culture here in america is the way that it is. It feels good to see evidence that directly relates our cultural trends to africa! Though they tried to wipe our ancestors of our culture the connection is still visible!

I truly thank you for taking the time to make this video, I always had an understanding of the whole good hair, bad hair thing, but this filled in a lot of blanks. I remember when I was little I had an aunt that would say my hair felt like plastic baby doll hair after the doll has been left at the bottom of the toy chest, I grew up hating my hair wishing it was soft and curly. Even now as a grown 27 year old woman I fall back into the feeling of if only my hair where straight, but I'm learning how to care for my natural hair, and it saddens me that I have to learn to love my god given hair, I should have always loved it and embraced it, but it's now something I have to learn for myself that I was never taught.

All though there were lots of negative stuff like slavery and the inhuman conditions they lived and died in, I still felt proud. I've gotten even more understanding on this natural hair thing. you know what love about being black (well mixed but 75% black)? all hairstyles are accepted in our community. you wear weave? awesome! it looks amazing in you you would so suit ombre girl! you wear dreads? work it, give em them chill ass vibes! braids/cornrows? you look good asf! we all do we are black and fuckin proud
Chime Edwards this was awesome. I love it. I was just talking about traditional African customs with my husband and friends a couple days ago specifically African Art history. Historic Aftican art highlights women more often than men, where you could tell that women and fertility were held at a really high regard. Once slavery occurred that ideology was lost where Africans adopted colonial veiws (white) which was a more demeaning perception of women. This is why a lot of black men are so disrespectful to black women today, but historically that is not how we originated :)
