Precisely 3.34 megapixels of pure nostalgic fun! Nikon Coolpix 990

  • It may not be the most practical camera in 2022, but the Nikon Coolpix 990 is about having fun and the early 2000s vibe. Despite the low megapixel limitation the camera puts out some surprisingly nice images, and the camera itself gives you full manual controls, along with some nifty features like a close-up macro mode. The swivel body design is super fun to use. Overall I give it a thumbs up for fun-factor!

      1.1mp, because my parents old digital cameras memory card died so I have to lower the resolution of the images to get more pictures, it's a 4mp but really a 3.98mp camera, doesn't sound good but it does better than my 13mp camera in my phone, I have my own digital camera that actually is a Nikon Coolpix but a newer one from 2014 with 20.1mp (really is 19.91mp) still getting used to it so I use both Cameras😂

      Personally, 2.0mp. On my old Sony Ericsson W810i. I used to take snaps with that all the time and share them online. Not seen any of those old photos in years, dread to think how bad they look by todays standards haha

      Been shooting with my d1h and still impressed. Colors are more important to me. Also if you shoot in hi-1 or hi-2 in black and white (3200 or 6400 iso) you get some fantastic grain. Similar to some films it feels.

    fun fact, there's a slide/negative copy adapter for this camera. I still have this and the tele adapter, I used to have a lot of fun with it 5 years ago. Macro mode can even stunningly complete with today's cameras in some scenarios. The only problem is battery life, which doesn't last half a day

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  Před 2 lety +1

      I didn't know about that! I did see the crazy large fisheye adapter that is attached to some gimbal system for panoramas or something. Little more than I wanted to spend on this camera though 😆
      I do agree the macro mode is very nice 👍

      @@snappiness there's even a hack to force a raw acquisition via diagnostic mode! It's a huge pain tho, as raw colors most of the time are innacurate and you have to convert the raw file to a usable dng

    I agree these old digicams can be a lot of fun. I still feel an irrational need to shoot "real" photos, so I've been sticking to ones that can do RAW and have at least ~10MP

      @@snappiness Thank you! BTW I did a few tests to use rechargeable batteries on my camera as a form of upgrade. Modern LiOn AAs (I have ones that have microUSB ports in each battery) do not work very well (it's overkill for the camera, I guess) but your average store-bought rechargeable NiMH AAs work very well. Another upgrade I've done is re-using older SD cards with a CF adapter and it works well with card readers for mobile phones and modern laptops with USB C ports. These two minor upgrades gave the old girl a new lease on life.
      The next thing is fixing that door latch for the battery. It doesn't fully close at all. I think a Velcro strip could fix that issue.
