Always loved the vintage Gung-ho. I was a Marine back in 1988-92. You could still get the heavier weight utilities (that's what Marines call their uniforms). When you were on board a naval vessel, they used saltwater to do laundry. It would fade out the utilities to that turquoise color. Part of the expression "salty Marine" comes from that. I got to wear some salty utilities for awhile. They commanded a certain respect among the junior ranks. Just like Gung-ho does!
The more you know, I've always wondered why his clothes were turquoise, now I do, even in the 80's Hasbro's attention to detail was stellar. Can't wait for Shipwreck and Torpedo, again thank you for your service 🙏.
The reason the hat (cover is the Marine term for any form of head gear, this particular one Gung-Ho has is called the utility cover) is due to the differences between Marine and Army uniform style. Both the US Army and the US Marines have a soft cap with a brim for use in the field when not wearing a helmet. The Army one is more shapeless like the V1 Classified Gung-Ho while the Marines use one that is cut/sewn to have an octagonal appearance from the top, and is often starched to make the corners stand out. Essentially, in Classified the most prominent Marine character in GI Joe came with a cover that was distinctively Army styled, which is now being corrected with Classified Gung-Ho. As far as the tattoo is concerned, I really wish it was the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, but understand why it is not. I do like this larger tattoo though, as the additional visible detail makes it look a lot less unfortunate than the first tattoo.
Great Video. Hope Hasbro lean more towards the future deco now that the retro and mint on card collectors have got what they want for the 32nd time (they will still complain). Give me figures with new modernized look and deco.
I hope they redo Scarlett. The new design is not bad, but I prefer her old school look. If they do, hopefully they do the comic color scheme with the purple.
I'd love them to keep the retro line going. Keep this line to give people retro inspired figures and keep the main line as more modern interpretations of the characters. I lean more towards liking the modern interpretations better, but this would keep everyone happy.
It's a shame the cards are so thin, as I wanted to keep then on card. I don't need them to be perfect, but it's odd they didn't double up like the other lines have. Either way, I like them.

Love the Gung Ho, maybe someday I’ll get him. For now I just took the first release and gave him the alternate vest, hat, and grenade launcher from the Action Force Sgt. Slaughter and that more than does the job for me.

This line has been a roller coaster for me. I didn't grow up with it so I'm not attached to a lot of the characters which on the one hand makes it easy for me to just pick the ones I want and skip the ones I don't, but nearly every time I get one I regret not getting a different figure from say Marvel Legends or Star Wars since that's what I'm more attached to, heck it got to the point that I sold off some of the army builders from this line so I could get more Star Wars figures. That being said there's maybe only 3 upcoming Marvel Legends I want this year and I've been down the Star Wars rabbit hole for the last month or so, and watching this video I think just might have convinced me to revisit this line seeing as they're such well made figures. As I said not being attached makes it easy for me to skip a lot of these, case and point with Gung-Ho neither design appeals to me, this retro one I like the outfit but not the colours, and the other I like the colours but not the sci-fi look to his uniform. Personally I like the more militaristic/normal clothed characters especially for the Joes, whereas Cobra their ridiculousness I'm somewhat okay with and pretty much all their army builders are great, but designs like Xamot and Tomax, Dr. Mindbender and Serpentor just do nothing for me. To each their own I guess.
The only one I picked up was Gung-Ho, I'm very happy with the others and it wasn't enough of a change to make me get them. I like the modern feel because I still have my classic Joes. However Gung-Ho just was needed in the old style just feels right. I'm taking my new one and he will stay with the Joe team. Coming up with a new name and backstory. He is going to be Gung-Ho's cousin just needs to work on the idea...
I just watched both videos of yours for Gung-Ho because I've been torn on which one I like. I'm still not fully sure but I think I'm choosing classified. The retro is much closer to the traditional in comics or cartoons but I just feel like he sticks out a bit too much? That said the retro has a worse backpack but I do prefer he has a sidearm and boot knife. Speaking of accessories.. my classified was missing his leg accessory! I noticed watching your other video, so thank you. I contacted Amazon and have a replacement on the way but if not for watching I would've had a defective Joe!
Thanks for reviewing these figures. I found the Baroness on clearance and I'm pleasantly surprised on the quality these retro figures. This is my first experience with the classified line and I can see the improvements over the vintage figures. I like the card backs since it reminds me of buying figures as a kid. I can easily see kids today enjoying these figures as much as I did the original vintage line.
I had this Destro for months and just recently opened it. It's far and away my preferred Destro over the Series 1 version. And the Series 2 Gung Ho might as well not exist in the wake of how awesome this one is.
I ordered the set for the nostalgia factor. And was please after seeing how some were being delivered in mailers that mine showed up in a box. A box two inches to small so they folded over the cards to get them to fit. LMAO You got me WallyWorld, you got me.
I'm not a G.I. Joe guy, but these look fun. Gung-Ho just looks plain fun, and I'm really digging the head and new accessories on Lady Jaye. I wouldn't mind getting the Joes in this wave, even though I already have the original Classified Lady Jaye. They just look like fun figures to give back up to Cap or something.
These just showed up in stores, Dec 22 Lady J and Baroness first, Still shelf warmers today, and were in the 3rd week of the new year 23 Dung-ho and Destro just started to show up. and because Walmart is so slow of stocking and product sitting in warehouses and trucks all the Gung-Ho and Destro were mushed in package, Looks like someone sat on the box. SMH
He looks good. My current is retro Gung Ho, with first release vest, elbow pad and backpack. I have the AF Sarge vest on the first release. I'm just not really liking the retro vest.
I thought I'd like the retro version but when I got it it looked to plasticity. Too toyish. So I swapped the legs and crotch with the v1 figure then swapped vests and definitely hat! I then took the side arm and holster as well as the boot knife painted it black and put it on v1. Now I have the best version. Was never a fan of the v1 Village People mustache.
Really hoping Mezco does a Gung Ho and has the licensing to use the Marine Corps EGA. Without it feels like it comes up short for me. There’s always customs
Call me petty and vain but i just found this retro Lady Jay and bought it purely for the face. I'm gonna use the hair from the first one to go capless. Now I'm just deciding which body to keep. Probably the first version. Great review
Kind of a shame about Lady Jaye not coming with hair on this one to wear without the hat, as I kinda like that look more, but I do like that if you have both that the hats are different.
Noticed via some Gr!d!ron pics that they had rotated the lower legs backwards and boiled, popped, swapped the feet for those armored shin figs like Gung-Ho. Gave it a shot on this retro one (since the armor kills the leg flow to me) and it looks much better, and now his Achilles' Heel is protected and he doesn't look like Lt. Dan's science project.
I prefer more realistic/modern G.I. Joe figures. Obviously, many of the characters are far from realistic (Destro), and the amount of shirtless G.I. Joe characters is... interesting. That being said, I actually do like the new Gung-Ho a lot, especially that new head and moustache.
Another great video. I'm just going through the catalog now, and clicking on what catches my eye. I seen a He-Man video, so that is probably next. 7th, G. I. Joe was my favorite action figure cause Star Wars didn't have movable knees and elbows.lol
The only figure I don't want from this wave is Lady Jaye, because I'm perfectly happy with the regular version. The new Gung Ho looks to be a massive improvement (in my opinion). As for Destro and Baroness, I missed out on them the first time around (especially since Baroness was a Cobra Island aka Target exclusive figure) so any excuse to get them into the collection is welcome.

I've pretty much passed on the Hasbro Joes, I got the bling Destro, one of the Cobra Commanders, and the swamp disguise guy (can't remember his name), but haven't (yet) got any of the "good guys" I've been waiting for Rock 'n Roll (my ultimate nostalgia dream-fig) (Okay the D&D WarDuke's #1but you get it) But the carded Gung Ho looks like my memory but better. Yay (if I can find one)
Robo, the logo that was originally on L.J.'s cap was her Parachutist Badge, (colloquially known as "Jump Wings.") "The Army's Basic Parachutist Badge is awarded to all military personnel of any service who complete the US Army Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. It appears to be based on the Sig Sauer M18. I have to give Lenny and the design team props for the research they did on which sidearm to give G.H. because M18 is the service pistol that the Marine Corps is currently using. When I ordered my retro Snake Eyes recently I checked the “gift” box. As a result, the figure came in a box that accommodated the size of the card back and had some actual packing material to keep it from moving around too much. Everything looked good when I got it. When I hear about how bad Walmart packaging has been for people I wonder if they have tried this option.
Nice review, man! Something I would like to try is kit bash Donald Pierce head in Destro body. I know it's not exactly the same suit that Pierce uses during his Reavers phase, but I think it would be a nice temporary custom. I also think Major Blood or B.A.T. could be options for this Donald Pierce's custom. It's on my list to get a Destro for that. Maybe you could try this and show us the result?
After watching your video l had to get gung ho. The classified gung ho doesn't have the correct colors. The Walmart gung ho is perfect to the filmation. I also like the weapons too. I ve been collecting these retro and classified g I joe figures now l didn't as a kid in early 80's. The nastalgia is something. Good video sir and thanks for posting. Next is that destro and snake eyes.
I got 2 of each and so far have received 8 figures and haven't gotten lucky with any of the cards lol....partially because they send them in bubble mailers lol
With the new Lady Jaye going full vintage, it makes me wish the first release had gone with the dark green pants and olive top to be closer to the animation, instead of being squarely between the two looks
I don't collect G.I.JOE figures, But I do think the team is badass and I think the Joes as Marvel's X-MEN while the Cobras are the Brotherhood because the Joes find a way to to stop and to defeat the main villain, the Cobra Commander, Awesome video Robo.
I have mixed feelings. There are definitely some improvements in these figures especially Gung Ho. But I do love the card files. I wonder if they will redo the rest of the line? Scarlet? Duke? Firefly? I want the BAT with the lenticular chest… hahaha…
I never got the previous Destro, no Lady Jaye and not even Gung-Ho despite him being a pegwarmer these days, but somehow i haven't seen the last two in mexico unfortunately. But i admit i am loving these retro inspired decos, obviously Gung-Ho will be the most wanted compared to the other too, but I'm gonna go for Lady Jaye the most in my case since i do like the lime green on her outfit and the black hat looks nicer than the blue one not gonna lie there. Yeah i might not like how their cards and blisters get mangled, but for me i like to have my figures out and throw away the boxes and card, never will care about them at all; however if mexico, mostly the walmart i go to gets them it's gonna be difficult since the store's customer service is horrendous.
Trade you a Destro or Gung-Ho for your good card back baroness. Yea you do need multiples. I have 4 Gung-ho then 2 Destro and baroness. Only one Gung-ho has a good card back. 1 Destro possibly passable. The rest the card backs are literally folded in half. Sucks being an in box collector with these.
I didn't pick up the original release classified Gung -Ho because the tattoo was so lame, it was completely underwhelming , and looked stupid .. glad they fixed it for the retro figure, even if its still not his original tattoo.. also the tattoo could have been slightly larger on the rerto for my money .. but I am an 80's kid, I was there when G.I. Joe A Real American hero landed in 1982, and collected till the line died in 1994 , and Gung-Ho was in every kids collection .. I picked two of these retros Gung-Ho up and 1 Destro.. Yo Joe !!! .. ..

Retro should be core characters that they didn't do as close to the original O-Ring 80s as they could. Super 7 is doing cartoon versions. I was hoping for a retro Scarlett with a new sculpt. The cards are flimsy and the whole point of displaying them on card is ruined. Wal-Mart's bag shipping insures that. Plus they doctored the retro card art to look like the classified changes. And Destro's eyebrows weren't part of the original vintage figure. Gung Ho was done right. Vintage toy look with modified new sculpt with original card art undoctored. People are paid to make these decisions. I'm taking all my bent cards back and not ordering the hiss tank because the cobra commander retro was the only reason for getting it. I usually think the online complaints are exaggerated but I was really looking forward to these retro figures and now am disappointed.
Anyone know if the Gung Ho hands pop off? I'm used to Marvel Legends and popping off the hands to get the weapons in there more easily, especially if they have a trigger finger. I have this figure and I started to try to pull off the right hand, and it gave me a surprising amount of resistance. I stopped because it felt it might break

Exactly! The other lines have super solid card backs. And they aren't even desirable hand painted nostalgic ones like these are.
They are probably cheaper and more environmental. But I do miss the file cards!

my card back was bent at the top. Warped plastic on the waistline of destro. Major gap exposed, definitely liking the quality of these figures.
I didn’t buy the v1 classified gung-ho. He just didn’t look like the character to me and so I passed. When I got the retro in hand I was real happy.

really on the fence between the retro collection and Super7's Ultimates mainly because MY notion of GI Joe is the animated series from the 80s.

I've pretty much passed on the Hasbro Joes, I got the bling Destro, one of the Cobra Commanders, and the swamp disguise guy (can't remember his name), but haven't (yet) got any of the "good guys" I've been waiting for Rock 'n Roll (my ultimate nostalgia dream-fig) (Okay the D&D WarDuke's #1but you get it) But the carded Gung Ho looks like my memory but better. Yay (if I can find one)
Robo, the logo that was originally on L.J.'s cap was her Parachutist Badge, (colloquially known as "Jump Wings.")

Similar to the situation with G.H. tattoo, the Parachutist Badge is an Army trademark which is why it's different on the retro L.J.'s cap and unlike with obtaining the rights from Northrup Grumman to use the Tomcat for the HasLab Skystriker, Hasbro isn't willing to pay the necessary licensing fees to use the E.G.A. on Gung-Ho and the Army so they can use the Parachutist Badge, with L.J., Duke, and Flint. -
That is a new pistol with G.H. It appears to be based on the Sig Sauer M18. I have to give Lenny and the design team props for the research they did on which sidearm to give G.H. because M18 is the service pistol that the Marine Corps is currently using.

When I ordered my retro Snake Eyes recently I checked the “gift” box. As a result, the figure came in a box that accommodated the size of the card back and had some actual packing material to keep it from moving around too much. Everything looked good when I got it. When I hear about how bad Walmart packaging has been for people I wonder if they have tried this option.
Dukes retro card is thick cardboard but destro's blows in the wind.

Nice review, man! Something I would like to try is kit bash Donald Pierce head in Destro body. I know it's not exactly the same suit that Pierce uses during his Reavers phase, but I think it would be a nice temporary custom. I also think Major Blood or B.A.T. could be options for this Donald Pierce's custom. It's on my list to get a Destro for that. Maybe you could try this and show us the result?

After watching your video l had to get gung ho. The classified gung ho doesn't have the correct colors. The Walmart gung ho is perfect to the filmation. I also like the weapons too. I ve been collecting these retro and classified g I joe figures now l didn't as a kid in early 80's. The nastalgia is something. Good video sir and thanks for posting. Next is that destro and snake eyes.

I got 2 of each and so far have received 8 figures and haven't gotten lucky with any of the cards lol....partially because they send them in bubble mailers lol
I much prefer the old gung ho , it's a much better looking figure for me.
With the new Lady Jaye going full vintage, it makes me wish the first release had gone with the dark green pants and olive top to be closer to the animation, instead of being squarely between the two looks
I don't collect G.I.JOE figures, But I do think the team is badass and I think the Joes as Marvel's X-MEN while the Cobras are the Brotherhood because the Joes find a way to to stop and to defeat the main villain, the Cobra Commander, Awesome video Robo.
I have mixed feelings. There are definitely some improvements in these figures especially Gung Ho. But I do love the card files. I wonder if they will redo the rest of the line? Scarlet? Duke? Firefly? I want the BAT with the lenticular chest… hahaha…
They've said in some Comic Con recaps that Snake Eyes and Crimson Guard are the final wave 😪

I never got the previous Destro, no Lady Jaye and not even Gung-Ho despite him being a pegwarmer these days, but somehow i haven't seen the last two in mexico unfortunately.
But i admit i am loving these retro inspired decos, obviously Gung-Ho will be the most wanted compared to the other too, but I'm gonna go for Lady Jaye the most in my case since i do like the lime green on her outfit and the black hat looks nicer than the blue one not gonna lie there.
Yeah i might not like how their cards and blisters get mangled, but for me i like to have my figures out and throw away the boxes and card, never will care about them at all; however if mexico, mostly the walmart i go to gets them it's gonna be difficult since the store's customer service is horrendous.

Trade you a Destro or Gung-Ho for your good card back baroness. Yea you do need multiples. I have 4 Gung-ho then 2 Destro and baroness. Only one Gung-ho has a good card back. 1 Destro possibly passable. The rest the card backs are literally folded in half. Sucks being an in box collector with these.
My cards were all trashed lol. But I open. Them cards are to thin to keep moc
I didn't pick up the original release classified Gung -Ho because the tattoo was so lame, it was completely underwhelming , and looked stupid .. glad they fixed it for the retro figure, even if its still not his original tattoo.. also the tattoo could have been slightly larger on the rerto for my money .. but I am an 80's kid, I was there when G.I. Joe A Real American hero landed in 1982, and collected till the line died in 1994 , and Gung-Ho was in every kids collection .. I picked two of these retros Gung-Ho up and 1 Destro.. Yo Joe !!! .. ..

Retro should be core characters that they didn't do as close to the original O-Ring 80s as they could. Super 7 is doing cartoon versions. I was hoping for a retro Scarlett with a new sculpt. The cards are flimsy and the whole point of displaying them on card is ruined. Wal-Mart's bag shipping insures that. Plus they doctored the retro card art to look like the classified changes. And Destro's eyebrows weren't part of the original vintage figure. Gung Ho was done right. Vintage toy look with modified new sculpt with original card art undoctored. People are paid to make these decisions. I'm taking all my bent cards back and not ordering the hiss tank because the cobra commander retro was the only reason for getting it. I usually think the online complaints are exaggerated but I was really looking forward to these retro figures and now am disappointed.

Anyone know if the Gung Ho hands pop off? I'm used to Marvel Legends and popping off the hands to get the weapons in there more easily, especially if they have a trigger finger. I have this figure and I started to try to pull off the right hand, and it gave me a surprising amount of resistance. I stopped because it felt it might break

Hasbro should've released the Retro line first as R.A.H and then the modern version as Classified.
So these are the classified figures, in retro styling? Meaning we could either get Classified or Retro??
Yeah they don't even have numbers as opposed to the regular classified.
