Let me show you how acts like Biggie, TLC etc end up broke. Let’s say an album sells a million copies at $10. That album has just grossed 10 million dollars. Most artist get from 6 points for artists who only break even to 10 points for big selling artist. If Biggie got 10 points, that’s 10 % of 10 million. Which means he pockets $1,000,000 dollars. The record label keeps $9,000,000. So hold your horses... the record company then charges you back for your video that cost at that time $100,000. Now you have $900,000 left. They charge you back for your studio and recording budgets, there goes another $500,000, now you have $400,000 left. The artists need money, cars, housing and living expenses. Personal advances $300,000. Now there’s 100,000 left. The album needs record promotion, giveaways, radio and Tv and social media support, that’s another $300-500 thousand, now you owe your manager 10% of that million before recoup, your attorney , 50, 000. Now you’re 400-600 thousand in debt on an album that sold a million. Artists make their money on Concerts , commercials and Personal appearances, but record labels got even greedier and now offer 360 deals. Meaning that they want a part of every profit making thing the artist gets. That’s how a lot of artists even though they sell a lot of records, end up broke.

This will sound like I’m defending the record label but this is just a my perspective on why this happens. If you were trying to convince investors to risk millions of dollars on something that isn’t guaranteed, how would you do it? You’ve already laid it out,(all the recoups studio time, videos etc) it’s really good business from the label as the reality is they are taking all the risk. However TLC and Big should never be compared. TLC were a manufactured group, their image was fake and their songs were written by Dallas Austin.(He has an Interview with Vlad, the label were more than willing to give a deal he was happy with because he was valuable and would stand the rest of time). Big wrote his own hooks and lyrics, his image was his own creation. If Big lived he would have got a better deal negotiated and his own label too.(Gene spoke about the fact Big was in the process of doing this.)Also I personally don’t feel sorry for people that don’t learn once they get through the door and then don’t level up. Nas is a great example he signed two shit deals back to back, that’s why he ended signing with Jay. He makes money outside of music now but those bad deals were on him. In the streets once you get hit with shit work you bring a fiend to test the next pack before you buy next time. In the music business once you have a bad deal, you get your own lawyer and a different manager for the renegotiation. It’s just common sense in my opinion.

@Abraham issac Jacob Yisrael yo could you please stop saying 2 pac the greatest ever. You need to clarify what a rapper is first. All you guys who claim pac the greatest don't even know 4 songs off his first 3 albums, shit! Probably can't name his first 3 albums without the internet. Pac was great because of his message in his interviews not his songs. Pac made about 7-10 positive songs. Biggie was all around perfection when it came to rapping, the man never had a wack song or waste a verse. Biggie killed every song he had,and every feature he was on. Both albums was great. It took pac until "me against the world " to make a great album. And that album sold because his court case and him going to jail. Then "all eyez on me" was riding off the moment of getting out of jail and joining death row. Pac made some great music but dude was a mediocre rapper at the time. Big was better, nas, raekwon, scarface, shit even snoop was a better rapper at the time. So please stop say pac the greatest rapper, and what's that's based on because it can't be lyrical content, story telling, rhyme, cadence, flow, wit, metaphors, word play. So if u say pac is the most influential based of his controversy, then yes!

calvinacb1 ok dickhead ...he broke down the way royalties and publishing points work ..album points don’t work like that.. let’s say B.I.G. was getting .25 cents for every album sold which is a high number for back then but ima say 25cent as an example..his album did 10mil which would times that by the .25 cent that’s only 2.5 million for the artist because the record company takes the rest and big sold his publishing to puff so that check was going to be light and royalties don’t start right away so if they cut ms Wallace a 7.5 million check that’s good depending on how his contract was set up ...unless they combined albums sold for ready to die and life after together then that’s fucked up and that’s probably what happened

All examples of what Puff did to Big which led to his death. Music industry is controlled by dark evil people and rap music is the leading category. For Puffy to not financially take care of the service and any other fees says it all plus lying and cheating Big on his contract. That p.o.s. P Dicky sold his soul to the devil and sacrificed Big in order to become wealthy. Truly sickening

Lol, for anyone reading this 2yrs later. Gene did a good job of explaining percentage points. He was clearly just throwing a number out there and the math happened to be off. The point still stands, just like in the analogy that he gave. Rent for an owner can be a percentage of their overall mortgage, for the duration of their loan. Even more so, it can be compared to how streaming works, since a person is not actually paying for something they will own, they’re merely renting the song until they decide to close their dsp account (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, etc.), and once that is closed, the music is gone.
Percentages can be broken down in many ways, it all depends on what you negotiate for.

I wont dispute Gene's STORY but I WILL say he is not necessarily "correct" in his record business acumen ... Yes Big did go "Diamond" (as did Pac) ....That means he sold 10 million units . For Puff to kick out 7.5 million to the family for that 10 million sold is NOT unfair at ALL ... Thats about 75 cents per unit .. For an artist (ESPECIALLY in the 90's). to make a dollar per unit , was virtually UNHEARD OF .. Thats a Mariah , Whitney or Michael type of deal ..If you dont OWN the record company or have had one of those aforementioned type of deals , you will NOT clear 1 dollar per unit on a major label release . IF what Gene is saying is true (the 7.5. million) , thats not too bad at all ..Especially when you consider that Puff owned 50% of Big's masters (and Big had to renegotiate that to get it down to 50% if im not mistaken) . Now if Gene had meant ROYALTIES , mechanicals and such ---different story (for those that dont know , thats back end money) ...Let that sink it for a moment ..
