The Mares Abyss has been a flag ship model for many years. I have an older one from pre 2006, still chugging along. Love my old Abyss 22.
Hello @draiden889, glad to hear that your Abyss 22 is still going strong. I still believe it was one of the best regulators Mares ever produced.
I use 28XR and DR as my cave diving sidemount regs, very happy with them.
Hello @petermeyer243, I personally love my DR second stages, though they are heavy to fly with. I recently switched my doubles Sidemount rig over to the 28XR first stages, with two Dual Adjustable second stages and have been very pleased with them. They are super light weight and breathe phenomenally.
Great history video, very knowledgeable. I dive the Mares 75xr tech set. Works great in all conditions regardless of depth and water temperature.
Hello @diveaddict6885, the 75XR was a great first stage as well. It was a shame when it got discontinued.
Nice sir!!! Salute!!
Glad you liked the video @hectorflores5607.
My first reg was the Abyss 22 Classic, no issues with it except it’s very heavy, now I am opted for Apeks all the way
Hello @nilotubes, the MR 22, Navy 22, 22X, 52X, 25X, and the 75X (all at one time paired with the Abyss) were extremely heavy first stages. The Adjustable Abyss featured in this video is realatively light weight in comparison to the others.
Nice Video - it definitely is the right reg to see a history lesson about, feels like it's been around for ages.
I have a question about the Mares first stages: what are your thoughts about the TBP upgrade kits? I am using a pair of 52X regulators and wonder if the upgrades are worth the money for cold water diving. If you could share your opinion about those, I'd very much appreciate it! :)
Hello @crazygeko49 great question. The good news about the 52X first stage, it was already designed for cold water usage due to the restriction of flow creating more friction, thus keeping the first stage from freezing. The TBP system is an innovative design. It's very easy to install, and would be a great addition to your 52X first stage.
@@LakeHickoryScuba Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it helps me a lot! Cheers from Germany :)
Hi Bryan, thanks for this rundown. I've noticed that the Mares Abyss second stage hose has a different connection than the Rover/Octo (and other second stages, such as the old US Divers, etc). Does that hose come in different lengths?
Hello @Cooper_42, you can order that hose in different lengths. Certain distributors will carry the 1/2 inch adapter as well.
@@LakeHickoryScuba that makes sense, thanks! And thanks for replying.
I sometimes see mares MR12 first stages paired with an all Metall 2nd, which looks nearly like an Abyys/Vortex but are missing any name on their front except for the mares logo and some rainbow colours.
I‘ve read, that they are called Mares III.
Can you give any information on these 2nd stages? How do they compare to the abyss? Are replacement/service parts still available? Do even Abyss parts fit?
I consider one of them as a backup for my Abyss.
Hello @mrki4937. There are several older models that are no longer serviceable. You may luck up and find a shop that has some back stock of parts kits available, but most modern shops like ours will not have the parts available to repair or service the older models. If you are looking for a inexpensive model, either the Rover Second Stage or the new SXS will work just fine. If you are wanting a metal housing for a secondary, the Atlas or the Abyss Navy are options, but they are expensive. Hope this helps.
Dive two Abyss with the old MR22 from 1996.
Hello @ringhotelteutoburgerwaldgm4456, the MR22 paired with the Abyss, to me, still the best breathing regulator ever.
Same for me. Twin MR22 Abyss circa 1996. Still have them. Best reg I've ever used and will never sell them. Not breathes better
Do you know the mares "Ruby" ? Looks very similar to the abbys but there is almost no information about it online..
Hello @matargershoni, I am very well aware of the Mares Ruby, and own one myself. The Ruby is a discontinued model though.
@@LakeHickoryScuba i own one. Im curious What do you think about it?
The Ruby was a great second stage. Very well built. Just as most manufactures do, they change their product lines, and certain things go away.
Isn’t the Dr 2nd stage balanced as well?
Hello @diveaddict6885, the 25XR and the 75XR first stages were balanced, but not the second stage. All second stages are either high performance or low performance. The DR second stage is identical to the Abyss and Nave Abyss, but comes with a slightly modified face plate. It was designed to assist in stopping unwanted Free Flows in heavy current.
How easy are this regs to free flow? Thanks
Great question @arqcm. As with any second stage, if the regulator is not set up properly, with the proper intermediate pressure and cracking pressure, all can Free Flow very easily.
@@LakeHickoryScubagood answer, they will free flow just as easily as any other regulator.
