- Travel with the train driver as we journey from Sunshine to Newport across the Brooklyn freight line on a heritage railcar, Diesel Electric Rail Motor 58RM made in 1930 under licence from EMC in America. (A Doodlebug) August 2023

Best part was getting to see inside the Newport Workshop at the end. Lots of fine old engines in there.
There certainly is a lot of history in there. Glad you enjoyed it 👍 🙂
G'day, thanks for the ride, it's a very heavy industrial area and the whole place looks glum, and dirty, hope to see you out in the Country next time, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.
It certainly is very industrial. There used to be sidings everywhere along this line when I first started on the job. Glad you enjoyed it 👍 🙂
@@pottyman1463 something different to see 👍😀
Putty Cat, different type of rail car, everything all in once unit.
It certainly is. A 'doodlebug' Americans refer to them as. Glad you enjoyed it 👍 🙂 🐈🐈
Thank you, I've been waiting for this and it doesn't disappoint..:)😀
Very happy to hear you enjoyed the ride across there 😀 👍
Those dual gauge points look like they'll never work properly, but work they do 😄
I guess you could say that they are a little complicated 🤣😀👍
The Newport complex has a treasure trove of old rail memorabilia, and I love that old Tramways bus sitting there at the end, a real blast from the past. This was a very good driving experience.......🚂🚂🚂🚆🚆🚆🚋🚋🚋🛤🛤🛤🛤
Very happy you enjoyed the ride. Newport certainly has a lot of history stored there. 👍🙂
there was a branch line at Brooklyn which ran for several K and there was another junction on that line too, Simsmetal from memory.
There were sidings that had considerable length, not really classed as branch lines. It was a very industrial area. Not much of those sidings exist now. 👍🙂
@@driver667 Yeah not a branchline, I wanted to convey these were sidings of considerable length. I travelled on them in a (dimly recalled) loco hauled RTA tour with Goulburn car.
@@darylcheshire1618 they certainly were lengthy. There were many sidings along that stretch of track that weaved off. I got to run over a few in my early days but certainly not all. You would have travelled more on the tour. 👍🙂
Know that entire line and area well, it was always a bit dumpy, but it loocks 3rd world these days! When i was kid i worked at newport workshop ( late 70s) when the train would pull up in the morning, you wouldn't believe the amount of railway workers getting off at that very spot at the end of the line.
I remember when I drove suburban trains, I drove the workshops service a number of times into the garden platform. All changed now. Glad you enjoyed it 👍 🙂
And that bit of track and through the yards before it adds about an hour to the Overland trip!!
The Overland does run through there on the dual gauge. 🤔👍🙂
Awesome
Very happy you enjoyed the ride 👍 😀
Nice drivers of the freight train. At the start tooting there horn at u is that a way of hello?
It is him saying hello. We know each other 😀👍
I once saw a steam train on the Sunshine-Newport goods line with R761 for the Hobsons Bay Steam Shuttles
Heritage trains run across there from time to time. 👍🙂
Thankyou driver 667 for the memories l used to catch the moter train to Woodend to visit my sister and brother in law he used to work at the signal Box there Or IT wo😅be the diesel and the carriages look like the movie Harry Potter so God bless you and your family Warren and Ingrid Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😸😸
Thank you. Very happy that you enjoyed the video. 😀😀👍
22:34 why have they blocked the old broad gauge only line. Until a couple years ago, maybe five or more, maybe ten, they did run trains along it.😅😅 Haven't seen it used in years, that explains why.
@@IPEX-BADD I guess they deemed not enough trains to warrant spending money on the line. 👍🙂
I wish your vids were longer. 😀
Keep an eye out. Every so often I post a long one for the people that like them. They just take sooo long to edit and render and an obscenely long time to upload. Check out the playlist for LONG videos. 👍🙂
Do you plan to Upload any footage from the Trip to Wendouree? I would love to see the Geelong - Ballarat Freight Line from a Drivers POV.
There is video already uploaded from a VLocity transfer I ran a few months back. It's in the playlist 'freight lines'. The link below is to one of the trips across there. 👍🙂

wonder if it would be viable to run a reg' shuttle between there, bung a station (10:02)
I've often wondered that 🤔👍😀
does anyone actually know what's under that huge dirt pile at the entrance to the workshops or is it just speculation that the streamlined S classes are under there??
I'm pretty sure that is just a story. There are no streamlined S classes that survived. Just a couple of tenders. I don't think there is anything under that dirt pile of any consequence, but the wondering keeps stories alive. 😀 👍🙂
The Newport Workshops look derelict, the Vic Gov need to put more into keeping the old alive.
archmcdonald, put money into the workshops? what for? both sides of government want to throw the enthusiasts out and let the developers in.
It would be nice to see Newport Workshops as a historical precinct. There is a lot of tourism potential in it. 👍🙂
@@driver667, tourism potential, yeah, but it deserves to be treasured more for the history. the birthplace of some of australia's greatest locomotives. and my old man worked there.
@@vsvnrg3263 there is a lot of history there. A working museum like York in England is the tourism potential I was thinking of. It would showcase the trains and what the workshops were for future generations. 👍🙂
Hi Colin is that your favourite loco?
I like all trains but the DERM is a great one to drive. 👍😀
not a fan of cities,or the endless graffiti,Newport workshops is a bonus, been there,in fact i think that the rail where you parked was the same one where I got a ride on the footplate of 707.IB
Very happy you enjoyed the ride into the workshops. 👍🙂
What are the safeworking arrangements? How did you know to come to a stop before joining the dual gauge, and how did you know that you had line clear after the SCT train passed?
There’s a signal on the right
As stated, the track has signals. They are a little hard to see in the video as they are not very strong lights in the signals. 👍🙂
Interesting to see you got the green just before the Sunshine road level crossing but at Brooklyn there was a red, so no Yellow to warn you of the signal being red at Brooklyn?
Two position signalling is in this area, it works differently to the three position you are used to seeing. 👍🙂
@@driver667 ok, good to see they have put concrete sleepers on that stretch.
@@clayton4115 concrete sleepers are great. It would be nice if we had concrete sleepers much earlier in time. 👍🙂
very nice footage, that was pretty close next to A62
@@clayton4115 it was stabled a little close. I had a good look at it before we went past. 👍🙂
