    Very nice pond mate, simple and fast to build. Thank you.
    Am going to start one next week, and I did this one last search, for building material ideas, and I ended up here. Am gonna do it with wood, simply because I can't spent anything at the moment, and I already have wood boards and some rocks for the bottom so that the wood doesn't sit on soil. Then when the opportunity comes, probably in a month, gonna buy that liner.

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 4 měsíci

      The main reason the water is so clear is no fish!
      I run a small trickle filter (box with foam and plastic pipe bits) that acts as a biological filter. Lots of tadpoles and snails currently in the pond, water still very clear

    Hi nick, love the idea of a raised pond. Was just wondering how much sun your pond gets in the height of summer? I have a south facing garden.... that gets very hot and sunny and was worried about lots of green algae. Thanks for the great video, and content :)

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 2 lety +8

      Hi Kerry
      Yes it gets lots of sun, but as its main job is a wildlife pond I have let the oxygenating plants run fairly wild, there are a good amount of water soldiers and lily's too. All this makes for not a lot of open water. I also run a small pump going through a small uv unit and then a box trickle filter. None of this was essential but can be found on the likes of ebay or gumtree for under £50 if you search and wait, these resulted in very clear water from day 1. I am expecting frog action any day now and will post an updated video on how everything is going with the pond.

    Hi, great pond! Can you show us how the frogs enter the it? I mean, it's above ground...

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 3 lety +4

      I have a couple of frog ladders, they are just planks of wood 3 inches wide and lent against the outside at 45 degrees. the frogs are back in already this year, I also have created a pile of cut branches (about 4 inch thick) at the other end as a sort of habitat, they can climb that too

    Mind if I ask Nick? Is it better to site a pond like this in sun, shade or somewhere in between. Looks like your's is in full sun but I have a dappled sun area I'd like to try this out on. (Great video by the way :))

    • @vmaxfr

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 2 lety +1

      I used internal corner brackets, think two sides of a square tube screwed to each sleeper. They didn't need to be too strong as the weight of the sleepers was enough!
      They just stop anything moving

    Wonderful video, how do you manage to keep the water so clean?

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 2 lety +1

      Well with no fish and lots of plants, it's off to a good start, but I did cheat slightly. I had an old trickle box filter and a small 15 watt uv unit, so I put a pump in at a slow speed and feed the water through the uv and into the box filter, then back to the pond, probably less than 100 litres an hour. The water stays crystal clear, and that's great as it is so full of insect life and frogs, tadpoles, the odd newt etc

    hi, I love the pond, do you get lots of mosquitoes breeding in it? How do you prevent this if you dont have fish? I was thinking of making one and put a few little rice fish or white clouds in just so they will eat the mosquito larvae. We live in the sub tropics, and mosquitoes are a big problem here. thank you!

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 2 lety +3

      Hi Margarete, no i don't have a mosquito problem in the pond, there is enough wildlife in the pond that probably feeds on the larva. where we live in the uk we are only a mile from a large estuary that itself has marshland and a major mosquito problem, but they don't seem to breed in my pond (luckily)

    Inspired by this. What water filling/filtering system do you have, if any?

    • @oldbloke135
      @oldbloke135 Před 3 lety +5

      You don't need a filter if you don't have koi. That is why fish shops sell small koi quite cheap. They know you'll be back a year later spending hundreds trying to get the water clear!

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 3 lety +3

      I use an old box trickle filter (foam and media) and a 15watt uv. I only use them as i had them doing nothing, that said they keep the water very nice and the amount of life in the pond is unbelievable

    I've filled it and emptied it twice already

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 2 lety +1

      One solution is to get it as level as possible and then overhang the edges with coping stones at the high parts, that will hide the mismatch, failing that any plant/marginals will soon grow hiding the edges

    can we keep kois in wildlife above ground pond without filter and chemicals

    • @vmaxfr
      @vmaxfr  Před 3 lety +1

      Basicly no
      For two reasons, koi are messy fish and require good filtration, and secondly fish like koi in a wildlife pond will eat all the wildlife.
      I don't use any chemicals in my wildlife or koi ponds
