My wife and I moved to Greenville County 20 years ago and have been retired for 10. Best decision we ever made. Growth has been crazy and housing prices have increased accordingly. Downtown has lost much of its small town feel but the amenities in the surrounding small towns have improved to the point that a trip downtown is more of a special occasion than a regular occurrence. We have seen much of the world in our lives and could have settled anywhere, we decided on Greenville.

A word on the retirement communities for 55+. My wife and i moved here a little over a month ago and were specifically interested in this because I suffered a serious head injury last year and the ready availability of on-site, urgent level medical assistance with nearby full urgent care clinics (no major hospital but there is one near by) was important. We ended up buying into Rolling Green Village, very near the Greenville airport and close to the major commercial arteries. The village currently has 750 residents on a 175-acre park property, though it will be expanding its residential capacity, most likely in the assisted living and apartment complexes. We do not require assisted living and so now live in what they call a "patio home", basically a condo house apart from (but close to) the on-site medical facilities. There are (I believe) 4 other such villages in Greenville but I don't know anything about them. The stiffest economic element is the buy-in fee; also, there are 5 sub-communities on site and each has its own HOA. We had looked into assisted living facilities where we used to live, and for an apartment in a single, large apartment building in the city with no surrounding park (such as here), it would have cost us roughly 3.5 times what this village costs per month. All that said, we are happy with Greenville as a whole and in particular (not shilling) with the living situation in this village. This option is, IMHO, something that should be on your decision-making checklist.

I'm getting the hell out of congested Florida. I want to get back to living with four seasons and not having harsh cold winters. I also like cooler summers with the higher elevations. It looks so beautiful and there is bountiful activities to occupy yourself with. Being Jewish, I was pleasantly surprised that their is a Chabad there. A Chabad is a Jewish type of temple that is more inviting than a conventional Jewish temple.
It sounds like Greenville could be a good fit for you then. It offers a lot of what you mentioned.

The Cliffs Communities courses, Augusta County Club, and Cherokee Valley all offer luxury living and are well thought of courses. There are several others at various price points. I don't think the humidity's gonna be a problem I live in Florida and the humidity is 10 months out of the year.
Oh yeah, then it shouldn't be a problem at all for you. When we moved to the area from Charleston, we felt like we got a lot of relief from the humidity. Since the humidity was similar there, I'd imagine you might feel the same way.
Just want to say that some of us NEVER get used to the humidity. I am planning on moving to Greenville but I have been living in Florida for over 45 years and can't get used to the humidity. If anythin, it has gotten worse with the change of climate. It feels in the 100's from May to Sept.
Thank you for sharing. I think you’ll find the humidity a little more tolerable in Greenville than FL, but it is still pretty humid from June-August here. You just won’t experience the year round humidity and the temperature is a bit lower as well. I hope the move goes well, and if I can help just let me know!
We're looking for a place to retire in the east. Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia are what we're focusing on right now. Greenville seems like a great choice as well. The problem is, I'm retired military. I don't use military hospitals, but I get my prescriptions from the base and use the BX and Commissary. As far as I can tell, Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC is about the closest military facility in SC. Is there anything closer in NC? And, is Sumter still in the mountains?
I guess that would be a 'no'.
Thank you for your service. My dad is also retired from the military and actually retired from Shaw AFB. I believe the closest base to Greenville is Fort Jackson, which is in Columbia, but that is about a two-hour drive. Sumter is not in the mountains; it's very flat, closer to the coast (1.5 hours), and near a few lakes/rivers. Columbia is similar to Sumter from the standpoint of what I mentioned above, but it's the state capital and has a much larger population.
@@livingingreenvillesc2899 This morning I watched a couple of CZcams videos showing Sumter, SC. Sumter seems like a pretty sketchy area, one I would not want to live in. I also watched a couple of CZcams videos showing Greer, SC, around Greenville. My last name is Greer. I always thought it would be a rundown place, but, from what I saw in the videos, I'll have to check it out on my trip back east.
Are home price in Greenville pretty similar to national average? Not 10% lower. Just home prices
Home prices are one of the biggest reasons Greenville is below the national average in affordability. The median price for resale homes in the US is $410,100, according to the National Association of Realtors, and the median price in Greenville County in 2023 is $308,490 as of August 2023. So, home prices are about 25% less in Greenville compared to the US.
My wife & I are both 55+ and I understand you may not have large communities geared towards this age group but do with maybe 200 people. Would these include amenities like a pool, club house, tennis court etc? Are there such planned communities that may be larger but aren’t necessarily 55+?

Tennis courts are not as common, but several communities still have them. The majority of the neighborhoods in Greenville County tend to be around 150-250 homes, but we have some in the 500 homes range. Don’t do it. Local infrastructure has not been improved to keep up with the higher population, crime has increased quantitatively. Everyone is selling Greenville, but it’s a lot of hype.
That's an interesting comment. Greenville has been one of the top population percentage gainers over the past few years and has had very little movement of people leaving the area. I agree that we will need to see infrastructure improvement to keep up with the growing population, and the city/county agrees as well. They are working on a one billion dollar project to improve the infrastructure throughout the entire county.
