English is not my first language. I had to translate everything from the original video (which is in spanish). Tried my best trying to correct spelling and how words were being used.
This video was made with the sole purpose of educating people about some of the most common methods being used to train horses to "dance" or piaffe. These horses by no means are Dressage horses; Most of these trainers do not base their training on the haute ecole/dressage training principles (example the German training scale/pyramid) where as a result we get what would be considered a true piaffe.
I've had some people complain that these video is also referring to Dressage riders. Clearing things up, each sport has it's dark side and good side, but this video is not aiming at Dressage riders nor their ways of training horses, I'm sure we are all pretty aware of Rollkur by now, and if that where the case this video would be titled "Dressage horse cruelty".
This video shows examples of what would be considered a proper piaffe (in case you failed to notice, most of these examples portrayed by dressage riders during the beginning and ending of the video).
The use of pillars can also be seen employed by haute ecole riders and trainers. The problem with pillars is that they inhibit a horse's ability to go forwar and goes against basic dressage principles.The Spanish Riding School uses them only sparingly these days, for that reason. The horses that do get put in the pillars have already had a lot of schooling and outmost care. (TheFreckledWonder www.fuglyblog.com)
Even professional trainers state that using pillars with an unprepared horse can be rather "cruel" and "harsh" and should not be used unless the horse is completely prepared and knows what he is being asked to do.
This is not a form of tradition; I've based all the information on true facts, even took the time to talk to a historian who has been studying the history of the north east states, where it's believed that this discipline was born. The oldest records of dancing horse training were hardly twenty years old, in the Mayan Valley in Sonora.
Dancing horses are based on a drug cartel culture, where expensive horses (most of these people spend big money importing/buying Spanish horses just for the main purpose of making them dance) and fancy tack represent money and status. They are not Charros, and even if they dress like Charros (which could be use to portray Mexico's culture) we must all know that a real Charro is a ranch working man, who uses horses for working and a Dancing horse would be completely useless to such jobs, their saddles do not have silver platting because they would break very easily if used to lasso. (No, I won't get into horse tripping that is a whole different subject.)
Yes there can be "good" trainers within the industry; I would like to recall these are few exceptions.
The Dancing horse Association needs to promote better treatment for animals, but it fails at doing this job. Show Rules will be translated later.
No animal cruelty laws in Mexico are ever enforced. They exist, but they are completely ignored or unheard-of.

Ive trained two horses to dance, using 2 tools, a clicker and mints. I would raise the horses leg, click and treat, then i would lower the leg, click and treat, the horse eventually learnt to raise on click, and lower on click, the faster i went the faster it raised, then the harder part was training on all feet. took 1 year of 20 minute training a day. he now dances in the field, the mares love it.

Training does not require fear. The horse might be afraid during the process of learning, but your job as a trainer is to calm them and allow them to enjoy themselves.
Yes, the very well done training I have seen on videos was totally considerate of the horse & gentleness was used at all times. And when they thought the horse was getting stressed, they stopped the training until he was ready to start again relaxed. That's the way to be a team with your horse & enjoy working together.
As a rider of dressage, a horse is never forced painfully or against its will to do the piaffe. It is a higher schooling than what I have done, but you can tell when a horse is working because he wants to, and working because he's afraid. Dressage is about balance and grace, we do push our horses to do their best but not out of fear or pain. These horses want to please and you can see them thinking and learning. You train the piaffe after years and years of basic training, just like a child. You start them off slow until they build upon their skills. Sometimes when horses foam from the mouth, they are moving the bit around because they are working and fiddling with it, its good because it prevents dry mouth which can cause the bit to hurt. But a horse should not be over drooling, especially out of pain.

You can use clicker training to train horses and it doesn't take very long at all. It actually takes years to train them in this way.

We have a young horse at my barn, about 5 years old. She's a loving, beautiful friesian/andalusian cross who was going to be a Mexican Dancing Horse if she wasn't taken. Her owner saved her from this fate, and I'm so so grateful.
Theres nothing like a horse that has been treated greatly with love all of his life and that truly enjoys human contact. Those are the best kind of horses, and there shouldnt be any other types.

to be honest there is other ways to train your horse to dance...if you guys know anything about horses you would know that. My trainer can make his horse dance and i watched him while he was training his horse to do this and absolutely none of these things were done! infact a whip didn't even touch Romeos legs!

just watch an olympic dressage rider…. teaching a horse to piaffe with a lunge whip meant for the job is one thing, but forcing it to do this crap is just atrocious…. like horses naturally will pick their feet up when you tickle their legs, it’s a matter of teaching them to do it by hold a whip near their bum.

My wish is to teach a horse to piaffe but I don't want to teach it like that, I don't want to teach it my hitting him/her with a wip or tie the poor animal in a post like that AND I WOULD NEVER I MEAN EVER HIT THEM IN THE KNEES NOR PUSH THEM TO DO SOMETHING!!!!! it takes patience. Thank you for this video. I have linked it to someone who thought a dancing horse looked "well cared for". He had the frantic gait and high front leg lift of whipped horses and the poll hyperflexion along with the massive amounts of saliva that is not accounted for by a copper rolling bit.
Thank you so much for this I am sureing it with my friends. This helped me see the difference between a calm horse that does the dance and a abused horse. My best friend is wanting to be a dressage rider and has started training so this is very good so shr know what NOT to do. Of corse she would never do this and I eould never let her abuse her horse it is very good for us as young riders to understand what is wrong and what is right in the equine community.
What is wrong is making a horse do what is unnatural for them.
I have a dancing horse we adopted because nobody could work with her. She has been hard to work with but after I got her trust I can ride her nomally. She came to us and you could tell she didn't eat well. She also has scars on her feet and neck. Oh and her right ear has been split but now she will even let me touch her ears. I see the abuse she has gone through and I am thankful she is now in good place.

I met a Mexican guy that trains horses and dogs, and he showed me a brief vid of horse training... the horse was crying the entire video... thank God it was only 30 seconds
I bought (rescued) a lovely Azteca (1/2 Andalusian, 1/2 American Quarter Horse) gelding about seven months ago. I am still trying to cure the infection he came with on all four legs. He has keratosis (thickening of the skin from scar tissue) on all four legs as well as numerous scars on his knees from being beaten into so-called dancing. Even after enduring a lot of human cruelty, he is still such a nice horse and has already learned to trust people handling his legs again. Mexican and Mexican American horse trainers would be better served (along with their horses) if they would concentrate on breeding horses with good temperaments that walk, trot and canter on the ground and under saddle, period.
Thank you! My boyfriend is from Chiapas and we just recently had a discussion about exactly this. When he realized the truth he was really mad that this happens and no one even seems to realize what is wrong with the situation. I appreciate you sharing this video.

I used to ride a horse that danced naturally. She was SO spirited and always wanted to run, so she pranced in place. I loved her so much.

I disagree on one thing though; some horses can hear rythm. But horses stressed and beaten into 'dancing' like this most defnitely can't. I doubt they'll even notice the music over the pain and stress.

They don't do that they dance these horses almost to death they will be completely washed down and sweat and panting every breath and they put b and their mouth that cuts into their tongue so deep the blood will be running down their chins and their necks these animals in Egypt do not know how to treat God's creatures they are monsters just look up rescue in Egypt check it out look at all the horses and the donkeys and the dogs and the cats that these animals are cutting their legs off when they're tired of their donkeys and horses and I've done starving them to death or have broken their bones during these brutal trainings they tossed them to the trash pile and don't even give them the decency to euthanize them claim it's against their religion and let them lie on the ground by the dump and die slowlythere is no people good in Egypt except The rescuers that are fighting to save them and they are one of the best kinds of people in the world they truly love our lot and they are truly good these people that exploit these horses and dance them to death you have not even witnessed the real training they do they lie as quick as they will talk to you in Egypt believed nothing they say especially when it comes to what they do to animals I personally know

@SpotterOz It takes a lot of guts to stand up for what it right, I’m glad you told that person what they were doing was wrong. It’s the same with me, I try to get through people as nicely as possible, but that alone sometimes, is not enough.

I have a friesian stud colt that I was in the process of selling. The buyer only had one more payment to go. I just found out he was planning to send him to Mexico to be trained as a dancing horse. I informed him yesterday that I would be refunding his money & that the horse was no longer for sale. It's going to be an interesting next few days. So glad I learned if his intentions prior to the full sale.

Id totally teach my horse awesome tricks without being rough and cruel thats for sure. Using carrots, making it a fun game for both of us, lol. If only I had a horse of my own!
I moved to mexico 6 years ago and I can say that every since I came here and seen how it was achieved I have been in disgust with this I am even afraid to buy a horse from here that does that because they have been scared into believing when music plays they must do this or be whipped I wish I could help them not to do it anymore but I honestly have no clue how to do so :(
There are plenty of people who know how to train properly & gently. Maybe you can make these kinds of training videos (or books) available; like maybe donate them to libraries &/or sell them in horse stores, at shows, or pass them out some other way that you can think of.

I saw dancing horses perform as a kid. I had NO idea they were being tortured. How fucking dare humans
Well...it took us 11 years until my horse donated me a sound, proper piaffe. Having time and patience, and the will to learn the trade properly, seem so hard these days...When he was ready, I needed nothing but to bring my legs into the proper position, sit back and put down the reins. Nothing more neccessary. No spurs, not harsh bits.
I wish training wasn’t all abuse. I once saw this beautiful andalusian horse perform piaffe and the trainer was only using a clicker. It was magnificent
whips are commonly used for this trick but i would like to say, on behalf of true animal lovers, not all horses are trained like this. alot of highly known trainers use the whips as more of an annoyance and not in a harmful way

+veganlife well I just started training a small pony because she is too fat. we started of lunging her but she hates it. so we teach he tricks, and she loves it because of how much more attention she gets by learning a trick

veganlife well if she comes to me for cuddles and she has her ears to the front and she is playfull with her mouth I assume she likes it. Btw we people learn tricks too. We do gymnastics to entertain people while we can easily break our legs. Now don't judge someone based on the bad videos you've seen on youtube. The horses I train have a wonderful life. They go to the meadow 8-9 hours a day. They get praised for doing things right, and we never punish bad behaviour. I see the horses I train grow up from scared to confident and willing to follow me to any place. They get the chance to figure out what they like to do ( for instance the little pony likes tricks and another one of mine likes lunging ). But I guess you never did anything with horses and you don't recognize when they are treated well and enjoy life because when horses are scared or don't like what you're doing you can see it from the size of their eyes to the wat they breathe. I hope I explained it enough so you can go back off from me because there ain't no animal abuse in my barn
Why you have to teach a horse a trick if is not part of his nature? Animals are not pupet for us... why just not let him free?
Look back at 5:18, with the grey horse. Do you see it’s mouth? The horses’ bottom lip is literally touching its’ neck. That horse has way, way too much bend in its’ neck. If you are going to try to get a bend in your horses’ neck, you want your horse to have no more than a straight line from the horses ears, down to the nose, and then to the ground. What this horse is being forced to do is not only cruel, but can also cause long term damage on the horses’ spine. Not okay at all.
I absolutely love the time and effort you put in to this video. It really shows that time and patience yields better results.
@DragonflyGlitter I agree with that. I've been to the training of the lippizers in Vienna and those horses are being trained very carefully. Also it takes the horses years ands years before they're ready for their first 'show'. Most horses aren't under ten. What they show on the video is downright abuse.
I just want to save all these babies and show them that they can be loved for just showing up!

THESE HORSES ARE BEING BEATEN/TORTURED/TERRIFIED AND SUFFERING. THESE PEOPLE ARE SADISTIC.
I have personalty just seen "Mexican dancing horses" being trained and From what I seen first hand the horses are NEVER EVER HIT. They do tie them up between post but never hit the horse. I think we are seeing a OLD way of training. Also 100% of the moves I have seen dancing horses do are also moves they do in the wild during fights. Also during my time watching the training I have never seen a harsh bit being used.
I've been riding for 12 years and have taught a horse to piaffe before. Not all methods of teaching are as brutal as the ones shown in the video- I use a method of asking my horse to stop and go at the same time. It takes months but he eventually got it. The way the horses are treated in this video are disgusted, but please don't think this is how all dressage horses are trained.
Its absolutely disgusting I never watch things like research because it s clearly painful for the poor horse.

wow, this has really opened my eyes to how cruel a beautiful movement is created, me and my mon n dad were watching a dressage show on tv once n my dad says "this is horrible, these people dont care about their horses at all" and i didnt understand why he sed tht n i was thinking "what do you mean theres nowt wrong with it?" but now i really understand wat he was talkin about (but i do still get that its not all trainers that do this and that there will be some that train in a gental caring way)
I don’t think that you understand the video. These movements in dressage are not bad as they are taught over many years to a horse that is emotionally and physically ready. The horses in the above video are not dressage horses
@provenspots The dangling chains hit their cannon bones, the purpose of chains in the TWH industry is way more different than in the dancing horse training. The chains usually have long ends left dangling, that way the horse hits his legs with it. In an attempt to avoid pain, some horses start swinging their legs outwards as showed in some video clips. You can differentiate a normal outside leg swing, typical of many breeds, and the artificial pain caused movement by cruel training methods.
the funny thing is that dressage piaffe is thought in the same way as the dancing horse's one, think about it:
-the horse get stopped by bits and helters;
-the horse get hit multiple times with a whip till they raise their legs.
plus: *in showjumping and dressage at high levels*
-they use harsh bits to stop they horse in easier ways
-spurs to make them go faster in no time
-martingales to keep their heads down (they don't rear when getting hit with whips or spurs)
-flash to hide the hard hand used to drive the horse
So, are they technically abuse?
I feel so bad for these horses, I mean endless hours spent getting hit in the legs . Come on. A little kindness?
@SpotterOz well I'm referring to "dancing" horses, like the ones showed throughout most of this video, which by no means,are anything compared to Dressage or even less to Haute Ecole horses. Hope I cleared that up.

This is called Charro. Not "Dancing Horses". A lot are actually trained to do this in a very unabusive way, and many do this on only a slight command. No pain, no anything.
It IS indeed tradition, and a lot are not abused in this.
The white jumping horses are branded 3 times they kick firwards and backwards lippazean or lappanease? They are war horses from castle days. They were taught this for battle it got turned into "dancing"
My brothers friend own a ranch and he teaches his horses to dance and this is how he does it. He puts in a box so it can’t move and he gets a little stick and taps its feet and if it moves its feet in a way he likes he would reward him
@tipsycat27 true. The video description states that this is no way near dressage training, these are simple shortcuts that some trainers like to take. Their main goal is mostly never dressage perfect movements.
Love the fact that they only mention the harsh ways of showing a horse how to dance. I've gotta say not all people show there horses how to dance in such way. I'd recommend you research some more into 😒
Obviously they only mention the cruel ones. Hence the title of the video. If people wanted to see the nice version, they'd look it up.
There was contrast in approach to create many of the same movements through classical dressage. Also at the end it states that not all dancing horses are trained this way.
These horses are very beautiful. They look beautiful, but they do not need to be huge for dancing. That is how they get very scared and they have pain. They don’t know what’s going on. They want to get awayfrom pain.

HYper flexion, also known as rollkur :( Poor horses :( We have a horse on the stable I ride that can do piaffe, but he is not abused to dance so it is very beautiful to watch :)
like I said to Monica. A natural and graceful Piaffe is taught when the rider puts the horse into a nice, RELAXED, collected trot. then asks for a halt. they'll repeat this and just shorten the amount of strides before the halt. this is the nicer way to do it, but in the video....that is just abusive. and it is mostly Mexicons who did it. at least that is what they look like.
even the good treatment is bad.. you never need a whip to reinforce. this is stupid beyond.
Christine Sawler in the "good" a whip isn't used to reinforce but instead as an extension of your hand. like you can't hold the reins and tap his leg with your hand at the same time. you can see the crop are the end is flat and he barely touches him. I use a schooling whip when I work with mine but rarely use it and if I do its to tap him same as I would with my hand. horses are big I'm small it makes it easier to reach

? I’m sure we are old enough to understand it, If not, I’m sorry for not making the “perfect” video that keeps up to all of your demands. I recall that there is no part in my video that goes to an extremist point of view by saying stupid things like “omg!! Stop using bits, whips and spurs!! It’s Sooo cruel!!” The description of the video talks mainly about training methods and the trainers and how whatever tool gets in their hands is always being misused.
I wish they hadn't taken away the star method of liking something as it used to give the marker of 'worth watching'. It sticks in my throat a little to click 'like' as I obviously do not like the negative training methods shown in the video, but I do like the message that kikingfriesian is trying to put across with this video. I guess I will just have to do with the fact that as I have viewed it, that will bring it up the league tables on CZcams. Thanks for posting. More people need to see this

Either way, Pillars are being used in a very wrong and terrible way by many mediocre trainers. I won’t portray something as butterflies and rainbows when it’s clearly not. Be aware that the video is too long itself; do I seriously need to explain every tiny detail?

@kikingfriesian foaming can also be a sign of hard work. I can ride in a bosal or Mecha calvery bit and if the horse is working, they foam. Regardless of what you are using.

@hustlernme There is a huge market for dancing horses here were I live. the most first common question that you are often made is "does the horse dance?". If he doesn't perform any silly trick, the horse is mostly worthless.
@TheRosa63 The thing is that whips, spurs and bits are not that evil at all, it's just the people who give them the wrong use. Even the mildest bit in the wrong hands can lead to terrible amounts of pain in the wrong hands. So whether they are bad or good depends on the person using them. :)

@horselovermkdm Most "dancing " (and not dressage or Haute ecole) horses are trained this way.. mainly in mexico. I'm not completely sure in the U.S, but dancing horse shows are starting to become popular over there too.
I just watched a news clip from a spanish station showing that some of the horses are brutally beaten and acid and weights put on them to make them dance this is sad what has this world come to when we just cant see the natural beauty of these animals more concerned with be entertained shame on us..
for those saying "its dressage" or "I've done it without abuse" well good for you but a lot of people don't have patience and do abuse so either way this needs to stop.

This is fuckin sad.. imagine someone whipping your legs and feet until they hurt and still expect you to want to move let alone dance.
Theres 1 video 5:37 with a paso fino in it. These horses have a special gait btw that looks like piaffe but aint piaffe. Its a bred in gait used by soldiers in the past many many years ago. The fast trampling of the hooves made it sounds as if instead of 1 horse getting to the castle were a few horses galloping towards the castle. In competitions the horses are asked to walk this gait over wooden boards for the sounds. Paso fino foals walk like that from the moment they are born. We had a guest speaker come in today and we had to watch this video along with others. It was disgusting to see such cruel behavior but at the same time I think it's good to be aware of this kind of stuff. Before I had no idea what horse bits were. But as heartbreaking and uncomfortable it was to watch, all I kept thinking in my head was 'make it stop make it stop' but I can't imagine what it was like for those poor horses. Cruelty.

Link please. I'd like to share this in a thread...trying to make a point as to why this IS NOT "beautiful" or "cool"...
At the modern ( european ) dressage horses it is very obvious that these horses can't walk properly any more , instead they are always doing Piaffe or Passage . They don't know any other slow gait . But the Piaffe and Passage today is very strange , the horses don't go down at the back , don't flex , they go down at the front , almost "rearing" with their hind . That looks as if the training methodes of the common european dressage star riders is not as it should be .
in any kind of horse showing there will be people who take training a little too far. and yes everything a rider uses can be used beside their intentional use. such as spurs. rock grinders (scary looking cowboy spurs) can be used very humanely, but even ball spurs which are considered "humane spurs" can be used inappropriately. i think all horse riders are guilty of using an aid inappropriately at one point or another. but there are times where it crosses the line
This isn't how it's done at our barn at all... The people at our barn tap their legs gently, causing them to pick them up. When they've learned that, we can do it with all four legs. Once that's done, we can teach that once one leg is tapped all the rest should move. It's not cruel at all. And the horses are only restrained by a halter and lead.
I've never trained horse but I have trained dogs. And they def learn better through being in a playful mood and I use treats to keep their focus. I've never had to pop or hit a dog to teach it any type of trick. They want to figure out what you are teaching them it just take a lot of repetition until they get it then they will almost start to read your motions and face to where you can do super command it just snap , clap , whistle, in different ways for different actions 🤷🏾♂️. Even had one dog train me lol she would want to go out side and she would just walk a circle around you then once you look at her she walks to the door lololol 🤷🏾♂️
