It’s like that one magical story you have that one time with many twists and turns to it, borderline feeling like the story to a movie, and then after that, life is just very normal for you for a number of years.
Kinda hits a little for some people like me who doesn’t really travel much to go do wacky or crazy things.
Espio being the murderer is the most he's done in a Sonic game since Shadow the Hedgehog.
Actually Rival 2 in being Silver's partner in that game... weirdly enough. Then again seems to be a theme for the Chaotix with both him and Vector (joining Team Rose in Free Riders or joining both Blaze and Silver in Team Sonic Racing) in being oddly matched with other characters.

@@SonicLegends I'm still baffled by how the other 2 team Chaotix members weren't included to make the full team playable in TSR, personal theory that they did so just to avoid putting in Marine the Racoon. But the game has a really weird roster anyway (Chao car instead of Cream with them, Zavok for some reason.)
@@Duskool Yeah, Zavok made no sense as him joining Eggman was so ooc. Then for Blaze and Silver they are in this odd situation where they are missing a 3rd teammate who represents power and well Marine is never coming back nor is she the power type. I think a cool teammate that would fit them would be perhaps Gmerl because he has returned in the IDW comics and he does has a close friendship with Blaze's first friend Cream and hopefully the games at some point have him return. Lastly, if Frontiers ending is to be true with the Sticks mention for a version of her being in the main universe have her be on Team Rose as yeah Chao was so weird.

It's really strange to see one of the slowest types of game work so well for Sonic fans. I guess it goes to show how appealing the characters of Sonic can be (if done correctly).
You definitely did not play Tails' Adventure.
The characters and stories have always been a cool part of the series. Of course, when you try you can fail but people love that stuff.
Look in the comments on the Egg Dragoon or E-102 Gamma themes, people love when it's done well.
It is because the characters work best when portrayed with the mentality that dominated the West in the 90s-humans but with special capabilities and characteristics. Sonic and company are ultimately characters that have human range of emotion and thought processes-not cardboard box avatars.
This really is the best case scenario when it comes to April Fools jokes.
Something completely unexpected but also benefits those who were “pranked” by said joke.
Like, it isn’t a disgusting tease or a cruel prank. It’s a gift to people that absolutely no one expected. If April Fools was more like that, the holiday wouldn’t suck as badly as it does.

To be fair on that wish for each character you interrogate to have a unique minigame, the characters do introduce new obstacles to the THINK minigame. Thrown shurkens for Espio and chaos spears for Shadow, for example. It's not much, but they do change it up based on character.
"Oh sh$&! Blaze is here. Put her in more fking games." I couldn't have said it any better myself. One of the best written Sonic characters. I'll take a spinoff just about her just don't do a Shadow the Hedgehog.
Honestly, Johnny says it best as usual. This game was cute. It was enjoyable and the portrayal of every character truly is something out of IDW. I had fun with this and to think it was just an April Fools gag. Not to mention, Sonic, Amy, Blaze and Rouge with the clean fit. Loved it

I honestly disagree, this game had WAY better characterization than anything from IDW.
Even as an April Fool's joke, this is a genuinely great experience, and it gave us some well needed attention for the other Sonic characters. They're the best they've been written in a long ass time.
Honestly, I'm down for the series doing some more experimental things. The fact this came out for free was pretty cool.

Agreed, with all the lore, various characters with unique abilities, all the crazy enemy designs and more I'm surprised Sega hasn't approached Atlus or the Phantasy Star team for another Sonic RPG.
@@lynxfresh5214 Sonic Chronicles is such a sad story. A more expansive lore driven Sonic rpg with writers from the comics with actual good gameplay and music sounds like a dream.
I dunno, i feel they should improve what works rather than just throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks. We had the storybook games and lost world for experimental stuff, I'm ready to see a fleshed out hedgehog engine fame.

I absolutely LOVED what they did with the characters in this game. *Especially* Rouge. I love that she is a smart character. But also sometimes just as dumb as Knuckles

this combined with the portrayal of the characters in Frontiers gives me a lot of hope for Sonic's immediate future.
legit, that moment where Sonic gets you motivated while his theme is playing...i shed a tear. That's the sonic i grew up with, and he was finally back after all that weird and disappointing shit. I loved everything about the characters in this game, made me feel like a kid again seeing them portrayed in the way they were.

This April fools gag makes me want more visual novel style games for Sonic and friends. I really enjoyed this and it felt like for a moment they remembered how fun the extended cast can be.
My favorite thing about this game is making the player character a menace to the main cast of characters

I hope if Sonic Team ever properly introduces IDW characters to main-line games (I want a Tangle game so bad that it hurts) they consider putting out another low-stakes VN prominently featuring the newcomer(s) within the more familiar cast as a sorta introduction to game-only fans. It can be a low-budget, effective way to introduce a new character to an audience and show how they bounce off and relate to the more well-known cast.
As a fan of both you and ace attorney seeing you cover visual novels would be great. I know there's the ace attorney retrospective on bsc from years ago but there's been new games and your opinions have probably changed. Just hearing your thoughts on the story and characters again would be really fun.
This video was also great, nice to see you just enjoy a sonic thing without having to be too analytical and critical about it due to its nature

I personally love the idea how Vector is a goofy dude who likes loud music and is a legitimately good detective. He figured out that his client was Eggman pretty quickly in Heroes.
It's all part of being a good detective.
Rouge was the "Entrepreneur" which is clever because in murder mystery stories the "undefined job" character is always a front for something like how they actually make money (theft for example)

This game really caught me by surprise, just like Johnny said "It's free, it doesn't hurt" was the first thing that passed through my mind, but I wasn't expecting it to be that good. The environment, character interactions and reactions, its everything I could have hoped for in a Sonic VN game and I hope they make some more. Also hoping to see more Vs visual novel series, keep up the good work my man and stay safe, big hug from Brazil.

3:35 Huh, thought my copy of Our Life bugged out for a second. I was actually playing right as this popped up on screen. Confused the hell out of me for a bit. lol
Solid game, honestly. Has an incredibly relaxing vibe. And don't worry, you have the option to ignore any sort of romance if you're not into that kinda thing.
I like how "Default Family Guy Death Pose" is just nonchalant used for Sonic's corpse; glad to see it's the industry standard.
Not only is this game charming but it helped me find new artists who worked on it. Both the still images and the minigame creators. Yeah, that was a fun time when it came out. ^^
I can't believe that Johnny is finally gonna take the plunge into Visual Novels so he can experience Tsukihime,Higurashi,Umineko and Subahibi,the greatest literature of the 21st century! /s

Me and a few friends of mine did a playthrough on this game and the entire 3 hour call was just filled with laughing and wheezing at everything. All of us were just laughing at all the references and making theories left and right, it really made me feel like a kid again. Props to everyone involved, that Sage cameo at the end actually had us applauding lmao.
Between the install base and its reviews, this game is shaping up to be the best gateway Visual Novel game (at least for Sonic fans).
I'd honestly love a review series on Ace Attorney or Danganronpa. And if you're worried about visuals, don't worry. Danganronpa is so balls to the wall insane I promise you'll have plenty of imagery to work with. It's the very best kind of crazy in my opinion

My fiance is the biggest fan of Our Life and I never expected to see that game ever referenced on any big CZcams channel, much less SCMJ. To all you visual novel fans out there, I highly suggest giving Our Life a try. It's very wholesome, you have a lot of options for your character, and it's just genuinely a good time.
I like to point out, when Blaze ask Berry if he committed any wars crimes, he didn't say no, Berry said "Well I um.." implying that he has committed war crimes in the past.
This was such a great treat for the fans and this review turned out great, Johnny. Would love to see more visual novel reviews here. Stuff like you mentioned with Phoenix Wright, Danganronpa. DDLC, but also Layton, Ghost Trick, the Zero Escape series, AI Somnium Files, etc.
Lovely video, the “don’t ask where the money came from” bit killed me.
With that said, I’ve been waiting for years to hear your thoughts on Ace Attorney and I’d never know when or if you’d get around to it. I’m pumped to hear your considering it, my full support is behind that idea. I think this video demonstrated well enough (to me at least) that that could work.
Also finally a review where I can actually watch it on release because I’ve played the game already and don’t need to worry for spoilers! Funny that.
My favorite thing about this little "game" is that there is a proper culprit to the murder mystery and they don't have an asspull twist on that, no that becomes a whole separate plot. We're not cheated out of actually getting to solve the mystery we came here to partake in, and that's cool.

For an April Fools game, it actually wasn’t that bad, plus Tails just looked so adorable in his detective outfit….all the characters looked amazing in their outfits but tails was my favourite

A Sonic The Hedgehog visual novel definitely has the potential, especially with character portrayals and interactions, but who knows when we will get another.
Also, while Sonic has a pretty spiffy hat, it's nothing compared to Knuckles' hat.
This game made it canon that Shadow eats coffee beans with a spoon, and I love it for that.

Interested in the rest of the video (since I enjoyed the game), but wanted to post first since seeing representation of that game always makes me happy!
I think Shadow’s role is the locksmith, Blaze’s role is a titan of industry, and Rouge’s role is a business tycoon.
I really liked this review Johnny! I definitely think you could make this style of video work with visual novels like phoenix wright, would love a Johnny Vs. Series over that. Especially with the little gags here and there for added comedy effects keeping me engaged!

This is a pretty good video for a visual novel review!!
I think going step by step for what you personally did or notable things that happened in your run is a good idea for when you talk about the story! And with VNs with multiple routes, like Zero Escape, maybe even covering your first route in detail, and then covering others with slightly more brief paragraphs could be a really good idea!
Either way, I hope this opens a new path for reviews!

I know it's the same hat Knuckles wore in the OVA, but with that hat he's wearing in this game, he looks like one of Ken Penders' echidnas, and I am 110% not ok with that.
I think shadow trying to get amy tickets might be justified by her in SA2 with reminding him of what Maria would of actually wanted😅

But yeah overall I think the best part of the game is the incredible characterization, everyone just feels right and I hope we get more of this slice of life style content with sonic. I feel like to the IDW comics don't really give itself time to slow down as much as I would like to have these kinds of moments.

If you want a couple great visual novels, I’d highly recommend Hideo Kojima’s Snatcher and Policenauts.
Fun fact, there are 3 names the game will straight up not let you name the player, one of those is Pheonix Wright.
