    Tbh they stayed so incredibly true to the original choreography and music, while giving it amazing new visuals and angles, sharper movements too at times; it was absolutely stunning. Every one who was cast for their roles were cast for very good reason 💜. They all did so GREAT! They were perfection. Rita Moreno , unbelievable talent and beauty . Unfortunately this version of West Side Story didn't make the impact they hoped for , in both societal and box office . It's a shame because it really is well made and Rachel Zegler was phenomenal , she deserved a nomination above everyone else in the film . But as you watch all the promo , interviews , news reports about the film , all they talk about is how they got it right this time , no subtitles , all Latina & Latino cast , which is terrific, but in this tension filled world , created solely by Politicians to spread division , gain votes , people want to go to the movies to escape reality , embrace the movie , but to have these political agendas in even the promotional materials . Spielberg kept saying the Latin X community , sounds so phony, not one Latin person outside of mainstream media or political candidates has ever used Latin X, and not downplay the Spanish by having subtitles , which also alienated a good portion of the audience . So much of the film is spoken in Spanish , without subtitles. How are subtitles racist ? If you go to any other Country they use subtitles so everyone can understand the language , for every film . Hollywood is so out of touch with everyone .They got it so wrong and everyone stayed away . It lost over 100 million , Spielberg's biggest financial bomb in his whole career . Still a shame because the film was well done , incredible cast and performances .

    Iconic film. However still frustrated at a few things being a Mexican American. Like 1: Why does a Latin girl not get a happy ending?
    2: Why was the division and hatred and killing one another not addressed at the end of the film?
    3: Why is the main white male character still portrayed as a hero, who even though he KILLS a brown man, his sister still continues to love him and ignore this fact?
    Idk bout you all pero this all still irks me. The hate and division is never addressed. The only great part in my opinion, was seeing Rita Moreno's character as Valentina who was trying to help BOTH sides.

    • @ryanlaskey6184
      @ryanlaskey6184 Před 2 lety +24

      All of those points are very good points but the film is still, at its core, an adaption of Romeo & Juliet so it does need to have that tragic quality.
      I actually found the character of Tony to be incredibly unlikeable after he kills Bernardo. After telling Maria how much he had changed after he nearly killed that boy and went to prison for it he shows that audience that he never changed at all. I think he would have always ended up killing someone or beating someone to death even if Maria and him had their happy ending. He had a hatred in him that couldn’t be controlled and it was always going to be someone pushing his buttons to make him explode. Whether it was Bernardo or someone 15 years into his future he was always going to end up the same way.

    • @qtasabutton21
      @qtasabutton21 Před 2 lety +2

      I understand that it's core is an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. But my problem here is why continue to make films with this narrative for Latin girls as the star of the show? Why can't they make a film with her having a happy ending?
      Why are we praising this tragic love? Why was Tony still loved despite being a killer and not changing his ways after killing a brown man?
      Why was Maria portrayed as a girl who still slept with him after even after he killed her brother? I want to see positive representation in films for our Latin community.
      We need to change this. There is so much work that still needs to be done. Why don't we haveatin directors directing a happy ending for a Latin girl in a big box film?

    Isn’t it a little hypocritical that on the one hand Rita praises the casting of an Afro Latina for Anita, then on the other complains that the makeup used for the sharks in 61 was offensively dark and “muddy”?

    • @Joyride37
      @Joyride37 Před 2 lety +19

      I think the context is different. In a different interview from this, Rita recalls she pointed out to a make up artist on the set of WSS -- "You know, Puerto Ricans are all different colors, why can't we be different skin colors because its more accurate? I'm already Puerto Rican and some of us are lighter" (paraphrasing) and the make up artist replied "What, are you racist?" which is a weird response and she didn't know how to reply to it.
      Rita's issue was more than Latino people were not being represented authentically or accurately whatsoever, and were forced to represent medium skinned stereotypes with awful make up, even when she, a real Latina, didn't look like that. Some Latinos do! But light skinned people shouldn't be made to wear brown face to force a stereotype.
      Ariana's context is different. By this time, things have progressed and issues of colorism and preference for light skin in marginalized communities are being discussed. There's more of a push and a desire for authentically dark skinned and afro latinos to represent their part of the community.
      So that's why it's a wonderful thing Ariana can play Anita as an Afro-Latina and Rita can also point out how it was wrong 1960s Hollywood forced her to wear brown face as a light skinned Puerto Rican.

    • @Jonmad17
      @Jonmad17 Před 2 lety +21

      She was complaining about brown face. If you're going to put brown people on screen, hire brown people.
