My all-time favorite movie, saw it 4 times as a child and have the DVD as an adult of 74 yrs. James Mason and Kirk are still pictured in my brain.

I was eight when I first saw this and am still in awe. It made me a lifelong James Mason, Kirk Douglas fan. Only topped by Douglas's "running of the oars" sequence in "the Vikings".

A film in a class all by itself. There just was nothing else like it. The romance of the sailing era meets modern sci fi...done in spectacular style...in widescreen color...with an all star cast...of a classic story from the father of sci fi himself...Jules Verne! Of course i loved it...what kid wouldn't?

Seriously, this movie was set in an alternate universe! It was set in 1869 when the book was written and had concepts of strange sea creatures, deep sea diving, eating seafood that was like a formal meal, an organ in a submarine, etc.

Glad to see they decided to build a new squid and film the scene on a stormy night. Looks awesome!

Also, shooting it as a night sequence helped make the squid look more believable.

This movie is a classic, a one shot wonder, best actors, made at the right time in history. No remake would ever be as great as this.

    Poetry.. my god
The Nautilus breaks the surface in the red after-glow of sunset, the ugly body of the squid silhouettes against the horizon, it's long tentacles writhing.

funny, in reality, squids are really 'shy' creatures and not at all aggressive, they tend to hide when disturbed, but hey, that's Hollywood?

Waste of money . A close up of a squid holding a toy submarine in a fish tank . Inside the submarine some crab meat.

Only sperm whales would be able to deliver one.
But even if a sperm whale would hire itself out for such a task, I bet it would eat the squid before delivery.

They were talking about remaking it with Will Smith as Kirk Douglas's character.. So yeahhh no. Today is too politically correct. They spend more time trying to be diverse and include unnecessary things than actually make a good movie. Kirk will likely be dead shortly, guy is 101 and in bad shape. One of my all time favorite movies.
