Very interesting insights from the "Macleans of the North" Chief Allan Maclean. I always feel that there is much of our Scottish history and family alliances being concealed.
My grandmother Margaret "Peggy" Mclean was born in Anderston, Glasgow beside St Mungo's church. St Mungo was the Patron Saint of Glasgow & a disciple of St Columba on Islay the mother church of Celtic Spirituality in Scotland. We never manage to find out if she was from the Mcleans of Pitreavie Fife or Duart.
Regan Walker has transferred her skills as a Corporate lawyer to writing historic accounts with a romantic slant much like Sir Walter Scott. Her Clan Donald Saga covers all of the organic history of the Lordship of the Isles and the Macleans as well as the Macleans of the North when the Lordship married into the Earl of Ross via Mariota Ross (Clan Leslie) who was the Duchess of Ross and inherited the Earldom of Ross when her brother the Earl of Ross's life was cut short by the ambitious Earl of Fife who was part of the Stewart's of Albany dynasty and who's bastard brother and son of Robert ll was harrying and pillaging all over the north of Scotland around Rosshire, Invernesshire, Moray, Banffshire etc. The Lordship became custodians of Rosshire via this marriage to Mariota Leslie, Countess of Ross and the Macleans of the north were gallowglass to the Lordship and were therefore appointed as Constables of Urquart castle to protect the great glen area from the Wolf of Badenoch and his caterans as well as other's. The Regan Walker books are really well written and well worth a read for anyone who has ancestry in the Lordship and the supporters of Robert the Bruce and Stewart's and her final book will conclude with Culloden and the forfeiture of the Lordship. www.reganwalkerauthor.com/clan-donald-saga.html
As a Gibson who did his Big-Y dna throgh Clan Buchanan geneologist they are being quite cagey and there are no good records of the roots of the name in Galloway and the Camerons are a Clan that I found records of having used the name possible because Gibb is old Scots or Norse for cat. I was able to establish that I have Gibson family in Northern Ireland and America through my Dna profiling and the Dna results also confirmed I am 95% Scots/Irish and the name Gilbertson that Gibson originated from means Son of the servant of St Bride in our mother tongue of Gallic. That info was also confirmed in Regan Walkers books the Clan Donald Saga. It is a fascinating subject and even though you never get the results you assumed you always get interesting results with fascinating details of ancient history and culture.
    Slainte mhath!!
