Hand Fracture Surgery

  • www.handandwristinstitute.com/... - The delicate bones of the hand are extremely likely to be injured due to their importance in most day-to-day tasks. They are especially likely to be injured in a fall, or by traumatic crushing or blunt trauma injuries, or twisting and torqueing. All of these are likely to lead to fractures of the hand.
    The three bones of the finger, from closest to furthest, are the proximal, middle and distal phalanges. The distal phalanx can be broken off in what is called a tuft fracture, which requires the insertion of a wire into the tip to hold it to the larger body of the phalanx and allows for healing.
    The middle and proximal phalanges are susceptible to oblique and transverse fractures. Oblique fractures occur on an angle, and usually require internal fixation using screws to correct. Transverse fractures are a straight break across the body of the phalanx, and also usually require screws or wires to be fixed in place and allowed to heal.
    Finger alignment is an important tool for doctors to determine if there has been a break. The broken finger will not line up with the rest of the working fingers and so break the line of a closed fist, sometime extending over or under the adjacent finger.
    Four to six weeks is the standard recovery period for a hand fracture, consisting of a removable brace to keep the hand from moving and letting the bone knit itself back together cleanly. Once the hardware is removed in a short, locally anesthetized surgery after this time, a rigorous regimen of therapy is necessary in order to return your hand to as much functionality as is possible given your injury.

    I just had surgery on my left pinky finger. It was a closed fracture. They put pins in it. Had to pay for the surgery out of pocket. I’ve had very little follow up care with this doctor. But it’s been three weeks since the surgery and I am experiencing a lot of pain all of a sudden. I am wrapping my hand myself. And I feel like this should’ve been in a cast post surgery. Is it common to put the hand in a cast after surgery on your finger? Is it OK for me to be wrapping my hand myself I’m not sure what position my finger is supposed to be in.

      @@Jan-gj8bm I think I saw the doctor twice and only one time post surgery for about 10 minutes. He wrote me a script to go to physical therapy. I never went to the physical therapy, body wrapped that finger to the finger beside it for a while may be a few months and my finger is permanently bent. Good luck with your surgery. Are you getting screws that are in there permanently or the ones that come out?

    • @HH-gv8mx
      @HH-gv8mx Před rokem

      @@Jan-gj8bm when this originally happened, when I broke my finger, I went to the emergency room 9/14. They x-rayed it told me that I needed surgery and sent me home. I called every single orthopedic surgeon and he was the first one they can get me in within 72 hours after I went to the surgeons office they make you give them a down payment of a couple thousand dollars just to be seen. And he scheduled surgery for 9/27. They put pins in my finger. Ideally, you’re supposed to go back to the doctor within 24 to 48 hours after surgery but not only did I wake up in the middle of a hurricane, I also woke up with Covid I live in Florida so I’m sure one of the people in the surgery room gave me Covid since no one here and takes it sEriously. The reason why my hand hurt was because the pins had gotten infected and they were supposed to be removed. I wasn’t able to be seen again until 10/19 to get the pins taken out. My finger was kind of crawled over then and he told me I was supposed to body wrap it with some coban tape. And told me I needed to start physical therapy. They couldn’t get me into physical therapy for like three weeks plus expense per session was out of pocket and I just never went. Perhaps if I would’ve gone to physical therapy I could’ve worked on straightening my finger out who knows. If you have health insurance that covers physical therapy, I recommend that you go! I had to pay for all of this out of pocket.

    I actually fractured my pinky finger at the base of my proximal phalanx. It healed with a malunion as well as a hyper extension and rotation. It doesn’t really affect my day today, a little stiffness in my PIP joint, but I’m also a guitar player and it really annoys me because of the way it sits up higher. I actually had a pre-authorization that would’ve fully cover the surgery, but mostly every single surgeon I went to told me it is a major risk to do it. I still wish I could take the chance, but they would have to completely saw the bone and realign it with pins. Who knows what other kind of damage they could do.

Is because I have no Insurance!!It's been 4 months since my injury.I don't know where to start and try to get it fixed.And it's my right hand.Yes I'm right handed.I hope soon I can get my hand fixed again.
