I bought my 1992 ASAT Special new in '92. I have Gibson's, vintage Fenders, a Hamer Custom Shop and a PRS. My ASAT's quality, fit and finish fits in perfectly with the rest of my arsenal. It has NEVER let me down in 31 years. My G&L ASAT is my go to instrument. Never regretted the purchase. I can't say the same for a couple of the others. Just saying...
Thanks again, Phil, and hello from our new channel 🙏
That middle position is absolutely soul warming. You’re such a tasteful cat you monster!
I have 4 G&L guitars and I am very happy to see someone giving them the respect and appreciation they have long been over due for. G&L have been my custom shop for years they are the industry best kept secret. As always Phil great facts great review and great company. In my humble opinion G&L is just a better fender. They worked with me on my builds as though I was a signed artist for them. Great company even better people.
G&L is too underrated IMO
thats an understatment..cant understand why theyre not popular..their tribute models are way better than mexican fenders..id say theyre 1 of the best bolt on guitars out there.
@@christophergarrido2802 I think they are beautiful! I love the weird and quirky ones! But hey, personal opinion.
Don't like their tremolo bridges looks though! This tele type i do like
@@paulscushschofield1288 I just got an ASAT Tribute Special, after doing research and trying to find a tele with p-90 style pickups. I am *so* happy with the quality of this guitar. Absolutely incredible. And I was unfamiliar with G&L until 3 months ago. They're the Fender-lover's secret!
@@kbadr I bought a G&L Tribute ASAT Special Deluxe (that's a mouthful) Those pickups are awesome! They're not P-90s and have almost the output of a P-90 but Jumbo MFDs are way brighter. P-90s always seem kind of dark and middy to me and at worst muddy. The G&L, on the other hand, is really punchy and bright, but not ice-picky like some teles can be. I can still get some passable tele tones out of the bridge but it's a completely different animal. Always in your face, punchy and bright, a total rock and roll machine that does double duty as a country guitar. Listen to Band of Susans they built their whole band around that pickup.
I'm blown away and very happy as I just found out today about G&L guitars and that Leo Fender, George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt innovated for another 11 years together from 1980 to 1991. Wow and to see their new innovations such as Magnetic Field Design Pickups, Dual Vulcrum Vibrato and Saddle - Lock Bridge!
It's like finding out Buddy Holly lived for another 10 years. Tanks for the video Phillip.😊
Well I'm huge on PRS and wanted a Fender but.. after seeing this I might need a G&L. Thanks for the idea.
Basically only play G&L’s and PRS’s (got other guitars but can’t remember the last gig that I didn’t bring at least one G&L)
PRS guy here. Also don't pass up trying a Squier Affinity Tele. Surprisingly good for under $200. Neck is just as fun to play as my CE24.
That's one sexy guitar. Sounds absolutely amazing especially with gain.
Let's not forget G&L , was actually George Fullerton's and Leo Fender's company, after they sold to CBS. That's what the G&L stands for.
In theory you're still getting a Fender guitar, complete with improvements to his own designs.
Yeah who could forget he wasn't allowed to use his own name after he sold it to CBS. Boy those fenders were crap on CBS on them too back in the '70s absolute junk
That's how Ibanez got involved. They became the Toyota offender and next thing you know of course who can forget the classic lawsuit guitars
I read some comments about it not sounding like a Fender Telecaster. If that means that it's not shrilling like a cat in a blender, then I count it as a positive thing...
@@0megalul309 Yeah, I know, lol
And just to pur some fuel into this fire, I never understood why you'd want your guitar to sound like a banjo and not play a banjo in the first place. I truly love a good Tele but I like it to be a bit rounder sounding, not waking up the dogs in my neighborhood
@Luke I'm exaggerating of course, just trying to have some fun while making my point. I love teles but the best one I've played was a butterscotch blonde one with the arm contour, belly cut and the n3 noiseless pickups. For me that's where the sweet spot is if you want a Tele to play live for example. Nothing wrong with the traditional ones, just not my cup :-)
My work bench is ashamed of me right now. Another great review. As always, know your Phil. Thanks for all you do.
Out of all of the guitars I've played over the last 25 years, the G&L Tele is the one that I remember the most as being so great, all round.
Great video, by a great man, about a great guitar!
Thanks again, Dr. McKnight!
I have been really happy with G&L Tribute Series, now I want one of these! Thanks Phil for a great review.
Always excited for a new video! Keep up the great work Phil!
Good job, Phil. That G&L sounded great. As a G&L fan, thanks for bringing that to the attention of your viewers.
Looks fantastic! Middle position was really buttery and nice. Love the combo of new and old. All the good stuff that makes the guitar play better combined with all that cool, vintage look. 👍
WOW! I have the G&L Tribute, great axe.. This looks FANTASTIC 👍
Hey Phillip, I have a dozen guitars, Strat, Gretsch, Partscasters, Epi LP etc.. play in a little weekend band.. everyone always tells me me G&L is their favorite tone.. I think its primarily the MFD pups.. very well made. This axe in yr vid , with all the custom options looks tremendous, and beautiful. I think youll like the Tribute. Your channel is awesome, thank you 👍
I got a G&L Tribute Asat Classic myselves years ago and love it. It is my favourite guitar besides my Les Paul. A year ago i went to a store trying out delay pedals, picked up a new G&L Tribute and it was just super heavy. Hit and miss i guess.
@@thomask.9850 no these are very heavy in general. Tribute are not the USA line. They will not be as good as this axe he played here. They are good versus same price point offers, by a lot, and some higher priced offers from Bigger players. On par with Fender Mexico if from Korea, and USA vs USA is what you like more preference wise, both are stellar at that level.
Muchas Gracias Filipe and Jose! I Love this show. Thanks for these guitar tips too.
300 K! Congrats Phil!! Awesome G&L!
Always nice to see you Phil
Good video Phil. I like this format of review your doing. That butterscotch looked 👍 great. The middle tone blew me away too.
I got my G&L used for around 1k and it is SPECED out. I love it. Also have a 1984 and its a dream.
First came across G&L through your videos and now I really want one, they just sound fantastic and look great! Thanks for the great content!
Such a great breakdown. Thanks, Phillip.
Thanks for reviewing G&L. I've been searching for more info on them.
Great job, really enjoyed the overlay of the pickups for a visual representation of what we’re hearing.
Very nice review, Sir. I've been playing G&L guitars since @1996 and I am always happy to see these guys get attention like this.
Beautiful ASAT! It sounds absolutely marvelous! Thanks for the video. You have a new subscriber.
Looks and sounds fantastic! I've played a couple of their Tribute series and was really impressed with the quality and playability. Blew Fender's out of the water that were like double the price.
You should have a million subscribers by now, at least, and I don't know how you don't. Thoroughly enjoy everything you conjure up here. Keep on keepin' on, Phil!
Love your videos Phil! Keep rocking 👍👍🎸😎
G&L guitars have always been top notch.
Thank you for your time Phil!
Great review Phil! That Butterscotch finish was gorgeous!
I love the way the wood grain shows through the butterscotch finish and it sound great too.
That is the third Tele style guitar I've ever heard that I love the sound of and it didn't ice-pick my brain like so many others do. THANK YOU! ❤️🎸❤️🎸❤️
Love my G&L! Thanks for the video.
Subscribed. Very comprehensive review. Bought the maple neck version today.
Wow! That baby has a gorgeous tone., Just like Crispy bells lol. Lovin’ this format Brother🤘🏼
Looks and sounds perfect! I can tell you really like it. :)
Love, love, love the clean tones. So full.
awesome tone. so poppy and so crisp and full!
the music store i used to work for carried them. i used to play the floor models and loved them
Phillip I agree that translucent butterscotch is beautiful, and the tones lovely 😍.
I watch numerous youtube channels. If I ever had to choose 1 to subscribe to, this channel would be the one! Very informative, so much that I've been sprucing up issues on my guitars based on stuff I've learned from this channel.
One can only dream of owning one of these. !!!!! Great demo !!!!. Thanks so much.!!!!
Absolutely beautiful and sounds amazing !
Congratulations on 300k subs. 👍🏻 Nice guitar.
You will remember this as the guitar you bought when you reached 300k subs. T'is very nice. Enjoy!
Love these videos and the new Nylon Sock of Fretfulness. Can't wait to see a maker's response to this. I'm picturing QC folks with these socks on their hands, rubbing away. G&L with all that customization without the BIG price is amazing.
Buying a G&L used may be the best electric guitar bargain out there. They sound terrific, I am not surprised to see lots of great players using them.
Bought my 93' Legacy for $650 in 2011. I'd say its easily worth double that in terms of quality and sound.
Oh hey! Great video!!
We're glad to be of service :)
Back in the late 80's I was very lucky to have won a G&L ASAT Classic, via Guitar Extra magazine. It is still one of my favorite Guitars in my collection.
Awesome video, keep rocking em
Great guitar! Thanks for the good work!👏🎸
As always great vid Phil!! And beautiful guitar!! 🤘🏻🇦🇺🤘🏻
My G&L Legacy is my #1. Those guitars just fit me perfectly and play like a dream, especially when you custom order one. I'm ordering another one with humbuckers in the future. I love G&L!
I love my G&Ls...love your channel.
I have always wanted to try a G&L. This one looks and sounds fantastic.
A local shop has a legacy tribute. Sort of their answer to the MIM fender stuff. I own all kinds of guitars and play for a living. I’ve been looking for THE strat to add to my collection. That little $400 bugger is it. I pick it up tomorrow. The only strat I can compare it to is my friend’s American special that was probably $1800 new. The special had the looks, but this guitar just sounds and plays fantastic period. First strat I’ve truly vibed with since then. Just one man’s opinion, but it seems to be shared by many!
Not being a "T-style" lover.... I really like this one! Love the headstock, the comfort carves, and those pickups sound great! I do own a Legacy...and it is the BEST "S-style" guitar I have ever played!
@@grantkoeller8911 LOL! I'm not much of a fan of single-cuts in general. Plus, I don't care for the headstock on most "T-style guitars. I love the sound of a Tele... and made my own...in a double cut style similar to one that I had seen Gary Moore play in a video. Mine has a humbucker in... the middle position, along with the standard T-style pickups to make it even stranger. I also added the "comfort carves" to mine. What can I say...... I did own a G&L ASAT Special with the p-90-ish pickups. Never should have sold that one!
Great review!
Finally someone who will play simple chords to show the range of the strings lows and mids and stuff like that instead of only solos like NO ONE would USE chords for a great songs ;)
Love my G&L...1st guitar recieved that was setup perfect right out of the box 👍😎
Nice to see a little G&L love out there, i have 3 and they are simply fantastic guitars. The arm and belly carve on that looks great too.
You hit that middle position and it just blew my mind!
I’ve wanted one of these since the 80s, the custom ordering pretty much sealed the deal for me
I am liking the guy doing the demo...nice job!
Phillip I'd usually never comment but I must say keep the videos coming dude you are doing a .Great job!!!! Great Channel!!!!🤘😆🤘🍺🍺🍺🍺
I've got a couple ASATs, like them. Have a chambered Bluesboy, no F holes, w/Seth Lover in the neck. Love it. Good demo video. Thanks.
Like a kid on Christmas. Love it!
Love G&L they make lovely stylish guitars, and i heard the set up is genarally spot on, that is a lovely butterscotch, really pretty Tele.
Wasn't expecting to have my suspicions confirmed that the neck on my MiM PJ Mustang bass is quartersawn today, but definitely thanks for covering that!
Love G&L I have an ASAT and Legacy both early 90s can't say enough about these instruments. QUALITY. Great Video!
Looks Beautiful :) Great video Phil :)
LOVE that middle pos. tone !
I love my ASAT Classic. I put a stacked humbucker in the neck and added a Bigsby. Fantastic guitar in every way. Much better built than my Fenders.
And that sounds fabulous!
That middle postion sounds phenomenal.
Love the G&L !
Old guy here, I don’t mind admitting that. Had a very early G&L, the original F-100 bought new in 1981 which was the company’s first guitar model. Three-bolt neck but NEVER an issue because the neck pocket fit was laser tight, a huge improvement over the often sloppy neck pocket cuts on Fenders at the time. I still am obsessive about neck pocket gaps in bolt-on guitars to this day! ;-)
Own two Skyhawks and an Invader from the mid 80’s with the 3 bolt, micro tilt necks. Love them. No issues whatsoever. Wish the still had the adjustable necks. Setups are so easy.
My sister has an F-100 Series II, I've got one of the first 12 or so silver sparkle Asats...my dad and his buddy were G&L collectors for many years, probably had 100 between the two of them. My dad had the only two left handed Broadcasters, his friend just sold one of his X body Interceptors for like 25 grand
I have a 1993 USA Legacy that I picked up for $500 dollars a couple of years back and it’s my favorite guitar, neck radius is a bit flatter than the USA fenders and the thing has massive frets on it and the neck carve is a little thinner as well. It sounds incredible and the PTB controls really allow for a lot more versatility than a traditional strat. I love the thing!
Very happy with my G&L Asat....had no trouble convincing a fellow player to try one and he custom ordered one and he loves his...it our Go to guitars....
I own 3 G&Ls - 2 guitars and one bass. All purchased 2nd hand, and I consider them to be awesome value for money. Recommended! I keep reading the Tributes are very good as well, but haven't tried any.
Rings very nicely, unplugged.👍
What can't Fender do this? Leo himself asked question and said "George, let's do this right!!". And G&L is the answer.
Yeah! Very nice guitar! I really like G & L guitars and how they allow you to "customize" one to your own liking without giving up your right arm. That's a real beaut in the butterscotch.
Thanks Phil !
That unplugged strum sounds amazing
I love the bridge pickup.
I own 3 G&L's, they are awesome guitars!!! Built like tanks and they sound incredible!!!
I have a G&L ASAT Fullerton Alnico in this color and its awesome. I plan on ordering a custom shop Legacy at some point in Belair Green.
Awesome! Thanks for the review. I’m thinking about picking up a classic blues boy in orangy red..
I'm a bass player, started in '69 with a Fender Mustang. I've had a lot of basses from Ibanez, BC Rich, Rickenbacker, Fender, Ovation but my absolute favorites are G&L. Leo's last and best. Thanks for the look-see, gorgeous guitar Phillip!
Beautiful medullary rays in the maple fingerboard / neck! That, I understand, comes from being perfectly quartersawn. Nice
That sounds beautiful
That thing sounds awesome!
Absolutely love my custom GandL.
What a fantastic sounding telecaster. I really like the contours on the body. The options are great as well. Custom without the Custom shop price. Well worth what you paid for it. Loved the middle position by the way. Thanks
I heard a lot about G&L
Love the butter-scotch maple neck
And this review was awesome
Thank you
Lovely chime tones out of that guitar - quality from where I stand.
Nice tones Phil.
Amazing sound
Beware buying G&Ls, I bought one years ago and before you can say “Abracabuyanotheroneadabra” I bought two more. 🤷🏼♂️
Love ‘em.
Yeah, me too. 1 stock, 2 custom.
It's NOT my Fault it happens
I've got the same problem.
As far as I can tell G&L is basically Fender but slightly better, sometimes for less money. I have no complaints and if I was buying a bolt-on type guitar I would look at G&L models first.
Reverend is the same way. Get one, and suddenly you have each model.
