  • We talked about Megan's journey into the genealogy world, starting with her 6th grade school project, and up to some of the new advancements in the field like AI. (Check out the song Megan created using AI for this Ask the Experts session here.) suno.com/song/...
We also discussed some of Megan's current projects, including her work on unclaimed persons and with the US Army on repatriating the remains of unknown soldiers. For those of you who are interested in working on these types of cases, Megan emphasized the need to do "reverse genealogy" -- to start with someone in the past and come forward to find living relatives of the person you are researching. If you're interested in learning some of these skills yourself, check out our upcoming Finding Living Relatives workshop here! academy.yourdn...
We wrapped up this session by asking Megan why her work is so important to her, and I love her answer -- she is "giving a voice to the forgotten". This is exactly why we do genealogy, so that the stories of our ancestors are not lost to the past and can be preserved for future generations!
I loved having Megan on the show today and if you want to learn more about her and the great work she does, check out her website here. megansmolenyak...

I've watched Megan for years on Family Tree Webinars and admired her work. This was a glimpse into what she's involved in and what drives her. As a military brat, finding the lost soldiers and reuniting them with family is dear to my heart. Megan's providing wonderful closure to so many people.

I met both of you in person at a genealogy fair at Nova Southeastern University Library in 2009 in Davie, Florida and bought a copy of Megan's Book "Who do you think you are?" I've been following both of you ever since and sorry I missed your wonderful live interview. Genealogy is addictive and challenging. I took over my mother's genealogy file after she passed and I truly regret I didn't do the interviews you spoke about because now there are so many unanswered questions I will never get answered. Thank you

I met Megan at the NYC Family History Fair back in the 1990's. Had a great time and also met Luci Arnez introducing her genealogy program for home computers. Thanks to ALL these three ladies my work has never stopped. Always something new to explore.
