As a Cameroonian student admitted to Unilag in 2016 I had to make a students residence permit at the immigration office at Victoria Island. I paid for the form which costs 133K naira for one year. It was supposed to be filled free of charge. The officers I met told me I had to pay 50K Naira. I asked if I will have a receipt for this payment, a question which never got any response. I referred to a higher officer who said I only had to pay what had been asked by the junior officers. I had to get all the money I had on me to pay. One of my most stressful months in Nigeria coupled with thre difficulties of relocating to a new country, having difficulties creating a bank account as a foreigner due to the switch to TSA

This is actually true. I remembered how many months I stayed before I could get mine. Corruption level is too high in this sector. I just prayed the appropriate authority got this message as well and do something about it.
The authorities are well aware of it but the system is a complete mess… even if you report them, no one will do anything about it and the officers use to say it proudly.
We are used to it already. The authorities would do as if they don't know. They are part of the endemic. Forget the authority they are aware of all these corrupt acts.

I have said it that passport will deny many Nigerian teachers from assessing the UK route opened for teachers. I had a very bad experience getting my passport in 2019, when I was told that there was no booklet and I had to travel urgently. It is a sad situation, really, and it's not only immigration, it's almost every public organisation in our country. God help us. Thanks, Taoma, for this.

@ ASQH some passport offices take over 6 months, even with the express payment made. Probably where you did yours is better.

Your wisdom can sometimes be humbled in Nigeria. The normal thing is to be prepared by having a passport even when you don’t have plans to travel. This allows you to prepare for opportunities. However, some people don't see themselves traveling anywhere and see it as a waste of money applying for passport. Under normal circumstances, you should not wait forever to get a travel document and it is sad to keep hearing that there is no booklet.
