- Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib is an American writer and analyst who grew up in Gaza City which he left in 2005 as a teenage exchange student. He writes extensively on Gaza’s political and humanitarian affairs and has been an outspoken critic of Hamas and a promoter of coexistence and peace as the only path forward between Palestinians and Israelis. Alkhatib has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Master’s in intelligence and national security studies. His writing has been published in U.S. and Israeli outlets, and his opinions and comments have been featured in international press.

@@YB-ok1ny gaza doesnt belong to egypt. when israel gave back sinai to egypt to make peace, israel wanted them to take gaza aswell but they refused, theres a famous quote from the egyptians that say they prefer to not make peace than to take gaza. they left it to israel. then in 2005 israel has cleared all of the israeli settlements in the gaza strip and gave them the opportunity to make an election, hamas and fatah were about 50-50, but hamas didnt want to make a coalition with other parties, so they started a civil war and killed over 300 fatah activists, alot of them in the streets to scare palestinians into supporting them. Israel, seeing Hamas rizing in gaza, an organization that declares they want to eliminate all the jews, had to close the border, while egypt also didnt want jihadists in their country, so they did aswell, thats why theres a blockade.

In recent months, I have increasingly felt that the more I learn about Palestinians and their history, the less sympathy I have for their current situation. But hearing Mr. Alkhatib and Ms. Mohammed speak has helped to reopen a path towards understanding and sympathy. Thank you for this important conversation.

There is no such thing as a Palestinian. You need to start there. The population in Gaza are Syrian Arabs, carrying a J1 haplotype that originates in Yemen. They arrived with the muslim conquests in 610 AD.
The problem with this whole middle east issue is from south of Syria and all the way to the borders with Saudi Arabia and Egypt, none of the populations are indigenous. It is just two competing religious cults that suggest that they are.
We cannot move all the Israelis back to Europe and we cannot move the populations of Israel, Syria, Jordan and northern Egypt back to Arabia..

There could be peace if the Palestinians would choose Ahmed or someone like him for their leader. I don't see that happening but his comment at 25 minutes in about the internal protest that got zero coverage on the news where the people of Gaza were clamoring for the return of the hostages and the end of the war does give me a little hope

This is the first conversation that made me to have compassion on Palestinians. Most of the conversations about this topic enraged me by the way people justify Hamas attack on October 7th. The first step of reconciliation is people acknowledging their faults and feeling remorse about it. Thank you guys.

Thank goodness that you “felt” an obliged to have compassion on Palestinians. Never mind the fact the Bible tells you to mourn for those who mourn which would include victims on both sides.
The very fact that you did not feel the need to have empathy for even Palestinian children killed or maimed and who according to the Bible do not know their right hand from their left , itself shows the condition of your heart and your walk in the faith. Just because someone puts a DP of Jesus does not make them Christian. This and the very fact you watch Richard Spencer (who is hate filled) itself shows what kind of a Christian( if indeed you can be called that) you are.
The Second Intifada was not caused by Sharon going to the Al Aqsa mosque. A Palestinian friend told me that his family had to restrain his nephew from from leaving his home in Saudi Arabia to participate in the Second Intifada before Sharon walked near the mosque. It is evident that this Intifada was coordinated on an international level before it started.
Mosab Hasan Yousef, in his book, explains it was all planned and deliberate strategy of PLO. Arafat also let criminals - Hamas operatives out of prison to start 2nd intifada.
I did not know until recently that Al husseini in the 1930s was calling out to "O Moslems" that "Al-Aqsa is in danger" that the Jews are going to tear it down and build the Third Temple.
Ironically that acknowledges the first and second temple.
Well, it's been 75 years and the Jews have not torn down Al-Aqsa.

Yes, read Son of Hamas.
They have used the entering of Jews and specific figures to Al-Aqsa a few times to rile up the Palestinian streets, usually stating the Jews were there destroying things.
This would easily anger the people and cause harmful riots.
They play their own their people's beliefs and emotions like that regularly, unfortunately...

14 minutes in and I'm very excited to hear your opinion. I started watching because of the obligation to hear the other narrative and I wasn't expecting it. As an Israeli and a Jew born in the 90s with great hope for peace, every war hurts me in the deepest part of my soul and bites into my belief that life has great power and that we are meant to enrich each other and not the other way around. I've been criticized Israel's policy through the years, and I have no doubt that a lot of blood was spilled and the Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza suffered and mostly suffer to this day. However, it is very difficult to hold hope when there is no responsible voice from the Palestinian side, who takes responsibility for their part and responsibility for the situation of the Palestinians today, who can point out of the problematic choices of Arab countries on the issue and not just on Israel, and strives for sustainable solutions. Long response - really very excited to hear a voice that wants life.

Before October 7th, international comparison parameters of Aza strip were better than those of 90 to 100 countries (varying with the specific parameter).
This was a superb conversation! I appreciate hearing a Palestinian perspective and it softened my view on them a bit.
As an Israeli I must point out that it is very comforting to see that there are also voices of hope and logic on the Palestinian side. An interpretation of things like I have never heard from a Palestinian leader, devoid of political interests and an emphasis on the citizens in Gaza who, as always, are the ones who suffer. It is clear that the Israeli leadership also made mistakes, but the difference is that in Israel you criticized the leadership, which almost never happens on the Palestinian side. In any case, I hope there are more voices like yours in the Gaza Strip and in the Palestinian Authority in general.

This was by far the best discussion about the war. Thank you for the honest voices speaking on behalf of the Gazans and Palestinians. We recently spent a few weeks in Isreal (2019). We had a bus driver who is Palestinian living in Jerusalem next door to our guide who is Jewish. They and their respective children were friends. Hamas drove this man out of Palestine post 2006 so that he could bring up his children in safety and away from the indoctrination. These two families are prime examples of what is possible in that part of world and give hope of what could come.

The story he just told abt the woman in SF reminded me of many years ago I was standing in line behind a woman at a film festival. She was wearing a tank top too and a cap that said “ I 💚 Hamas.” I had to bite my tongue not to say “how do you think hamas would treat you dressed like that?” 🤷🏼♀️ Today I would speak up!

Its not the israelis, its the palestinians who needs to elect a new leader. Israel and their leaders has done tremendous job in educating the population, investing in the right things to upgrade their infrastructure and improvise their society. The palestinians on the other hand keeps waging war and want the entire land free from jews.

His experience in Gaza is of a higher person -watch a story of Gazan child who escaped to Israel as teenager not to be coerced t violent school system and his family bad treatment and eventually converted to Judaism and stayed in Israel at prageru Chanel - his name now is Dor shahar and he speaks of horror os Hamas regime in Gaza
I don't know if it's the same video, but I watched the guy who was tortured by Hamas because he lived in Israel for a while and tried to convert. He eventually moved or escaped and converted to Judaism but it was a long struggle and he needed advocacy from Israeli friends.
His father, needless to say, disowned him, long before he escaped into Israel while pretending to be a construction worker. He had worked construction with his father. His father was paid well to do construction in Israel, but still wanted to destroy Israel.

This is such an important discussion. I support Israel but the honesty and transparency of Ahmed’s thoughts makes me more open to understanding the Palestinian perspective not the militant jihadist POV. Yasmine’s perspective is also right on.

I think he's very smart and tells a great story, but totally neglects to discuss the very real issue of the Arab world not wanting a Jewish state. It's humiliating for them. It's not just Hamas, it's the PLO, the PA, Hezbollah. Hamas is just one of many groups who represent the Arab world's utter disgust at the idea of a sovereign Jewish state in their dar Al Islam.

Definitely noticed that as well. He painted gazans in a very positive way even though he claims he hated the victim card narrative... And one of the people on the panel asked specifically about his friend willing to m*rder him which was BEFORE Hamas took over. I'm glad he's a decent person that actually seeks to help the people and detests the despicable behavior of the protesters, but to say that it's the "settlements" and the "oppression" causing all this is actually ignoring that these radical beliefs already existed way before Hamas, and that it IS, in fact the people that elected them, because they related to their charter, which openly states they don't recognize Israel as a state and their holy goal is to eradicate all Jews. He painted a picture of peace and prosperity when even before Hamas took over there were always attacks and wars and 5 peace treaties they refused because they could NOT recognize Israel's right to exist, also to claim the west bank just suffers from oppression of settlers is ignoring the massive issue that most of the population there support Hamas, one of the founders of Hamas was from there and that terrorism like suic*de bombing, stabbings, Molotovs throwing, illegal weapons smuggling etc mostly committed by them. How in the world is it reasonable to just ignore these obvious threats going on for decades and say it's the aggression of the settlers when in fact, Intifadah started after Israel tore up settlements and left gaza as part of a peace treaty. To claim the Palestinians are not religious people is just not true, and he even said that his own family were all religious people... Sorry but if you genuinely want to approach this issue and solve it you have GOT to face the reality of the conflict, and the reality is that just like the palestinians have become more and more radicalized, so has Jewish people that saw the problem and genuinely felt threatened. As a matter of fact, the Palestinians, or as they actually are called Muslim Arabs, had way more advantage in every aspect before Israel established, and chose to put all their efforts on eradicating the Jews. October 7th is proof, that civilians participated in the attack and r@pe, while many cheered and threw candy.

Gaza people are Egyptian. Egypt refused to take it back after 1967.
An Egyptian person told me that Egypt refuses to take Gaza people because they and surrounding Arab countries don’t want an October in their countries. Jordan is Palestine and Israel has been Israel for 3700 years way before Islam and Arabs in Israel.

palestinians aren't an homogenous group, there was always such voices and positions. Main issue is that these were never in a place of decision making. Very rarely (even in western democracies) such people get to power.

I understand that you must somewhat blame Israel. Don't forget that Arafat was brought to Gaza and we gave him help to raise Gaza to prosperity. Israel gave weapons to help Arafat deal with terrorist groups. But Arafat started the campaign of terror and murderous bus bombings, which made the Israelis realize that the Palestinians do not want peace and shift to the right, because the Arabs only understand power.

I think it’s very difficult for Israelis to trust Gazans. Hamas attacked the left-leaning peace-loving Israeli communities. They attacked the very Israelis that wanted a two state solution. It’s so hard to see people as innocent when we’ve seen the children’s education and tv shows. We’ve seen the women passing out candy after October 7th. We’ve seen so many examples of Palestinians supporting Hamas in more ways than just political. We’ve heard from the hostages that explain they were kept in civilian homes with Gazan children. We’ve seen information coming out that the Palestinians working in Israel marked houses for Hamas. And then the Palestinians in the West Bank cheered on October 7th.
I think it’s extremely hard for Israelis to trust people when there are dozens of terror attacks still continuing to this very day. I hope and pray that there are more Palestinians like this man, and I wish they would speak up more often. Instead of tweeting support of Hamas, I wish they’d tweet pictures and videos of Hamas terror in Gaza.

I think the Israelis lost the fate of a two state solution after october 7th, with Hamas`s popularity soaring from 40 to 80 percent in Judea and Samaria and 93 persent of the Palestinians feeling more proud to be a Palestinian after october 7. I wonder why the people voted for Hamas in the first place, it`s not like it was a secret what their goal was. It states so at the very beginning of their 1988 charter. To anihilate jews in Israel and the rest of the world. Maybe they didnt think it through how messy the anihilation of a people can become for all involved.
Ahmed’s information and positivity is something all people need to hear, in order to develop a better appreciation of the fine cultural nuances, integral to improving our understanding of the region.

Ahmed made me cry when I first heard him speak... Like others, it was because he brought me hope for our Palestinian cousins.
I wholeheartedly accept Ahmed's criticisms of Israels actions, we aren't perfect any more than any other people, we all need to try harder to find the right solutions for these issues.
The truth must come out though for that.

Ahmed, thank you for speaking up. If more people in Gaza would share Ahmed's view and perspective we would not be here today. Unfortunately, if we are being realistic, someone as secular and progressive as Ahmen would never be elected to represent the people of Gaza. Also, the islamic countries and leaders benefiting from this conflict would not let someone like him to be elected. I don't want to be pessimistic but my hope for peace after the Oct 7 was lost. At this point I am just hoping that I am wrong and that there is light at the end of the dark tunnel. Listening to people like Ahmed really helps maintain some level of positivity.

My Great Grandfather was born Mt Lebanon, Syria. 1863.
The church rescued him and other children there during the civil war and took them to Scotland.
He became a doctor.
His children became amazing adults and integrated into that world. One of them became head of the World Council Of Churches and received an OBE for repatriation of WWII child refugees.
It’s tragic that this terrible cycle of war continues in Syria to this day.
No protests for Syrians.

Sadly, I think he is quite optimistic that most Gazans are rational. He says himself that the Gazans who meet Jews are likely not Jew haters, then says 70% have never been outside Gaza (so never met Jews). I also learned that part of why the 10/07 attack was so successful, is because many who worked in Israel helped guide the massacre (they knew the area well, after all). There is also an interview with a man raised in Gaza, who now is Israeli, stating how his dad made a good living working in Israel, yet he constantly talked about killing Jews.
I would love to believe this isn't the majority. However, every single "free Palestine " supporter I try to discuss the conflict with, also seems to defend Hamass and the 10/07 attack, blaming Israel and the Zionists. So if these Western supporters hate Jews and justify their murders, how can I expect Gazans to be any different???
Dor Shacher gives a different perspective. He says the majority of Gazians hate Israel, Jews and are schooled and raised to KILL them.
Finally, I hear the voices of normal Arabs, not only from Israel, but those who really know Gaza. I was already started to think that the whole world had gone crazy. Does anyone else in the world hear what those two are saying ?
This is one of the most clearly communicated, thorough, fair, and productive presentations on this topic I've been able to find. It's very unfortunate that main stream media hasn't caught on to long format discourses such as this with depth and nuance. Thank you.
It was very difficult for me to hear that there are Gazans who are not brainwashed by Hamas and who might share ideas with Ahmed, as well as hearing that there is actually hunger in the north. I am a US & IL passport holder it was much easier to believe that everyone was essentially Hamas and well fed. I appreciate this new information. I will add that in so much as the land was legally acquired I don’t understand why Jewish communities wouldn’t be completely free in a PA country. If not, then it isn’t true peace & would be the kind of country (unable to accept minorities) I don’t think deserves support to come into existence. I also appreciate Ahmed’s sincerity but I’m suspicious of the claim of terrible settler violence (having spent time in some of the most “controversial” ones and witnessed accusations that were absolutely false). I also believe the IL right wants coexistence before the IL left. My sincere sympathy for Ahmed’s loss of friends & family at the hands of the IDF, every innocent life lost is an eternal tragedy. He has left me with a renewed hope for a peaceful & fruitful future for the entire region.
The issue is of course in the middle of war people call for no more war..... but after would Palestinians just elect or fall to ANOTHER Hamas? This issue is common throughout Muslim run countries.
Finally I can hear intelligent people talking it’s really very frustrating to listen so many lies even to listen politicians is horrible to listen I would love to be able to live side by side in peace

I am Israeli that was so broken after October 7th, and this video gives me hope of a better futer for us both.
We Israelies were so hopefull too during the Oslo accords, yet at the same time so afraid of hammas terror attacks.
I live in Jerusalem and there were so many boomb explotions here, people from my family almost died in these attacks, but still we kept hoping for peace between us.
Many of Israelies like me want to see a strong independent Palestine next to us, and to visit each other and live together.
We were very excited when gaza had a 3 plane but beautifull airport, and in the news there were talks about Gaza building artificial Island for a bigger airport.
It was always sad to me that in order for us to hear criticism about Gaza and what is realy going on there we had to listen to people talking with their voice changed and their head covered, because there is not freedom of speech, just like in the west bank people are not supporting the Palestinian Authority but can't talk openly against it, but to see you two talking so openly was very incouraging.
Many Israelies don't agree with the setelments, and the current goverment and want a better life for palestinians.
Thank you for speaking out and hopefully we will have peace and no more wars. That is what I dream of giving to my children more than anything.
I also want as an Israeli to express my sorrow for your losses, and hope you will in this way of speaking commemorate them as well, and get over this terrible lose.
