  • Today I got to chat with my wonderful flower friend Allison from Sunshine and Stems. Allison is also in year 3 on her flower farm and is growing a successful business for her family. Check out our convo where we discuss wholesale, farmers markets, tips for success, mistakes make, and ways we see newbies going wrong. It’s a great chat! #flowerfarm #flowerfarming #oklahoma

    I got a message last week. The request was flowers for DIY wedding. They had priced at a flower market and it was too expensive. My year 1 & 2 self would have reduced my price to suit. Year 3 me politely declined. I work too hard to provide cheap prices for my produce

    For my tiny urban flower farm, a high tunnel would not pass code and also take up way too much room as would a greenhouse. Low tunnels would stop the birds from voraciously eating weed seeds and baby slugs, so we got creative and custom built doors on our garage that are mostly solid, clear, plexi panels with wood in between the window panels. It's the perfect season extender for me - that and building a seed room in one corner of our work shop.
    No plans on a cooler although the seed room could easily be converted with 8ft styro insulation panels and a cool bot for the summer, giving double duty to the space.

    what a great friendship and sensible conversation!
    Time and again I hear even seasoned (pardon the pun) flower farmers just ordering whatever they fancy and hoping they will make a profit. Credit cards are a dangerous thing and should be used with caution, especially in a business which can be shattered by the weather or pest pressure.
    I think your business heads will take you far and I wish you every success.
    Prepare to pivot into vegetables when times get tough.....sometime fairly soon.

    Alex, I went to Farmer Bailey and I really liked their stuff, but there’s a significant lack of information about days to maturity etc. Could you maybe do a video on how to order plugs?

    Am loving your videos. Heading into my year 1 and have found your info VERY helpful. Would love to know more about how Allison makes it work having her flowers at a location separate from her home. How do you water? Where do you keep all your materials? Etc. does she have a CZcams channel?

      Great questions! She doesn’t have a channel but I plan to have her back for future interviews to cover these sorts of things

    I´m starting this year! I´m going to build my flower farm from seed, and focus on perennials. I´m also going to buy some varieties that I can´t start from seed. All will be documented on my channel 🙂

    Some of the veggie growers may be growing those "brights" as pollinator attractors....

      Perhaps but selling those flowers at a loss, under market value is a problem for flower farmers

    I’m an Eden Bro ranunculus orderer…but only because I’ve not grown them before, I didn’t know if I could, and I didn’t know if they would sell. But now I have, I can, and they will. So what is your suggestion for a better source?

    • @CoramDeoFarm
      @CoramDeoFarm  Před 5 měsíci +4

      You’ll want to order wholesale from places like Leo Berbee, Onings, and Ball Seed

    • @EvelynM-vlogs

      @@CoramDeoFarmif in Canada, wholesale from Unicorn Blooms or Van Noort.

      I would suggest that if you still want to have the farmer’s market sales outlet, hire another mom in a different season of life or a lovely college student to sell for you. I am sure the hourly wage would still be worth it. If you decide to drop that sales avenue perhaps you will be giving another new flower farmer an opportunity to take on that market. Just a thought. You will never regret the time you spend with your littles. It goes crazy fast.

    Thank you! Watched the whole video and I still have one question I’m trying to get nailed down. How do I find a wholesale price list for my area? I have looked at the Boston terminal and see what they have listed for bunches but is that the same price for rural Iowa florists? Is there a discount because it’s wholesale? I haven’t bought wholesale to know. I have a few florists in the area who have reached out asking to purchase but I’m hesitant since I don’t know what price they expect.

    • @AllisonErdly-yb1et
      @AllisonErdly-yb1et Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hey! Allison here. I would just ask one of the florists that has reached out to you if they would share a wholesale price list. That could give you a good start at least!
      My wholesale prices are definitely less than what I charge for retail bouquets.

      Definitely something to consider in the future! Although a friend of mine at my market has had so much trouble finding and keeping help as it’s such a small job so it’s definitely not easy to find someone reliable that you know will be there week in and week out through the season!
