QAV500 FPV - Crescent Beach, BC

  • Just 15 minutes from our home lays the little seaside community of Crescent Beach, Surrey, BC (established in the late 1800's.) In the early days, it was a rather remote place to build a summer cottage and now the cottages are giving away to new homes. The body of water you see is Boundary Bay which leads to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and from there to the Pacific Ocean. Off in the distance you can see Mayne and Saturna Islands that are blocking your view of Salt Spring Island and Vancouver Island. This is just a small portion of the Crescent Beach shoreline.
    As an FPV newbie with a shiny new quad, I wasn't prepared for the pucker factor that kicked in as soon as I realized that I was flying over water the whole time (for the first time). If it went down, there was no getting it back. It wasn't until I watched the video that I realized I was being way too cautious and flying much more slowly than normal. I'm hoping that with more experience, the pucker factor will ease off. The temperature for this flight was up to a nice balmy -3C and the wind finally died down for a bit.
    I hope you enjoy this brief flight. I edited it down to a length that I hoped wouldn't bore you to death. The video gave me a number of clues about how I need to fly in order to make the videos better. Practice, practice, practice!
    This was flown with a QAV500 equipped with a GoPro Hero 3 on a Zenmuse gimbal.

      Thanks very much Pete! I've got a long way to go before I'll be able to fly this with skill lol. Still getting used to FPV and will have to resist the urge to "look around" up there. When I do, it takes the quad off course and away from what I want to catch on video. At the end of the day however, it's a lot of fun.

      It is a great place to live Pete but because we are such a young country, we lack the history and architecture of everywhere on your side of the pond.

      think yourself lucky you didn't have Henry VIII in your history because that sycho killed over 70,000 of his own loyal subjects over forty years - lol, "total power corrupts" as they say !

    Beautiful, thanks for the aerial tour. Slow and smooth, just the way I like it. Also got a chuckle out of those two guys with matching clothing who walked under the multi-rotor just before it landed. Showed it to my wife, she also enjoyed the scenery and the "twins".

    • @SubToTripleThreatRC
      @SubToTripleThreatRC  Před 10 lety

      Lol. I had a chuckle too. The "twins" were the only people on the path and appeared out of no where. I politely asked them to hang on for a minute while I landed but as mini "bad boyz" in training, they decided to be tough guys and ignored me. I found their attempt to be clones so funny I almost forgot about my need to land the quad. Thanks for the kind comments about the video!

      @SubToTripleThreatRC  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks very much Bill. I have to say that the Zenmuse works like a charm. I shudder to think that I paid a thousand bucks for a Zenmuse gimbal when the Phantom V1 was first introduced. It was when I watched back this footage that I realized I needed to slow down when I panned and quickly rotating the quad. The video loses a bit of the almost perfect smoothness it gets when flying normally and when panning slowly. It is a learning process for sure. Many thanks for the kind comments brother! Cheers, Bob

    • @XB223
      @XB223 Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, everything electronic seems to be like this. That's the only reason I'm seriously considering one now.
      I've seen many of these glitch out on customs and phantoms. More than I am comfortable with.
      I've been drawn to larger motor gimbals for some years now.
      The phantoms are incredibly fine turned, so tuned it can kill the thrill of flying it if you do custom build
      outs, as we discussed.
      I'll tell you (maybe) a little secret. DJI tuned the expo curves incredibly precise and focused on the overall build; AUW, size, motors, gimbals, everything on these. I think expos are running on everything but the gimbal, as I had to look into my P4P adjustments. The gimbal was way too fast. I know for sure they have expos on the rubber. The gains are tuned awesomely well too. Naza-M's tend to have a rudder left or right twitch in flight. also a drop in altitude the further out you go. It's real noticeable on quads.
      The end of life CineTank scenario caused me to learn a lot about the Naza-M that I'm sure
      I would looked elsewhere for the solution.

    Bob, that was amazing and all you advised and more! Truly stunning picture quality and such stable platform by the QAV500… and of course your piloting skills! Now for your little neck of the wood, truly beautiful area and countryside, you couldn't have picked a better location to start at least! Now I and can't wait to see if you can out do yourself! The video was… brilliant… A1 all around again my friend, a work of art! Two big I think you just raised the bar job thumbs up from me! Cheers Bob!

      The wetlands area will remain protected and is a significant draw for eco-tourism but the cottage feel of the area will disappear because of the rising price of land and because of those that will be tearing down these quaint cottages to build large homes. It's a shame. At least the birds shouldn't notice a difference :-) Thank you for watching and for your concern.

    By the way my friends in the states are selling a 3rd axis mod for the H3 Zen... Not that you really need it, but it eliminates ALL side to side swaying XD
    Oh, and I made the mistake of upgrading my Zen to latest fw. Remote tilt was unusable because too fast, but I figured out a way to slow it down on the 8FG. It works better than ever now, and let me know if/when you need my help setting it up!

      I think that was the Zen FW update I mentioned that I was worried about. Glad you found a cure! You'd be a hero on some of the forums. There are a lot of pissed of users. The tilt speed on both mine are okay at the moment. The 3rd axis sounds interesting and the next time we get together I'll pick your brain about it!
      Hope to see you soon!
