Comparisons don't help, because they lead to unhappiness if you don't compare well. Comparisons should be with oneself only, see if you have improved from where you were last week or last year. Two important factors in happiness are control over your own life, meaning you are making your own decisions, and you are being valued for what you do. Son is unhappy because he is missing both of these things: he is doing something he doesn't want (finance) so he doesn't have control on his own life and he is not valued because his father is always upset with him.
